Get Your Hands on Singapore’s Most Iconic Dish
2013-03-19
Serving up Singapore's most iconic dish in a variety of styles is IFFOOD Group's Chicken Rice stall. Part of a cluster of food stalls selling popular local delights in the heart of the CBD area at China Square Food Centre, this chicken rice stall brings you classics such as roasted and steamed chicken rice, as well as other versions if you’re craving for something different, like chicken curry noodles and roasted chicken noodles – all at an affordable price range of $3 to $4.50. No-frills for perfect consistency Unlike traditional Hainanese chicken rice establishments, this stall set its sights on a no-frills approach by eliminating food preparation processes involving heavy reliance on workers’ skills – all in the name of promising quality and more importantly, consistency. Here you’ll see rows and rows of only two types of chicken parts, namely thigh and drumstick. That’s right, no need to go out of your way to tell the server that you only want the best parts – tender thigh and/or juicy drumstick – that’s the only stuff they serve here! Every dish has a twist The other interesting thing about this place is that almost every dish has somewhat of a twist. The white chicken for example is steamed and not boiled; and instead of the deep-fried method, roast chicken here is actually roasted to perfection. The tasty, fragrant rice used is cooked with a homemade paste consisting of a mixture of fresh ingredients. As for other dishes, particularly the chicken curry noodles, roasted chicken noodles and vegetable side dish, the unique twist lies in the curry gravy and sauce – they boast an ingredient that gives it this added oomph, and that’s belachan. You’ll be able to pick up on the distinct twang almost immediately!
Healthier options If you prefer something healthy, you can also choose between simple chicken porridge and chicken noodles soup, with an “ABC” soup-inspired base (which you’ll get with almost any chicken rice dish).
Top it all off with sauces and add-ons Finally, don’t forget to top it all off with various sauces and add-ons. Aside from the ever-important dark soy sauce and chilli sauce (you can trust that this spicy concoction packs a punch here!), there’s also other choices like sweet chilli sauce, belachan sauce and even ginger paste – something that’s becoming increasingly rare at chicken rice stalls. Add-ons aren’t just your typical sides of vegetables and whatnot. Here you get items such as sinful fried tofu, crispy on the outside and silky soft on the inside, and Japanese-inspired soft yolk hard-boiled egg, aka lava egg.
