I'm always a coffee lover, so I will always search for some nice place to try out some coffee. Found this place in various apps that recommended me, and it was amazingly cool! We arrived at the cafe around 3pm and the place was packed to the brim! We had a hard time finding seats. We waited for awhile (10-15 mins) and finally got seats outside. The long queue at the counter looked very messy, probably because it was too crowded and the whole place was not spacious enough. I ordered a cup of Espresso with Milk for myself and a Cold Brew for my friend. The cold brew was served in a medicine glass bottle, interesting! However, the iced coffee tasted quite bland, even after adding the syrup etc. I love the coffee art on my cup of espresso! The froth was thick, with a slightly bitter taste and I like it that way.

Besides the coffee bar, there is also a private coffee tasting room (the annex), a coffee school and a roastery. I may come back here to try their food and coffee again, most probably on a weekday when it will be less crowded!

This is a very outdated review. I mean I have been to CSHH many times. It's not so much that I really like the coffee or the food..it's more for the company and it's convenience to places i go for dinner at times, because I am staying very near Lavender. I actually visited them on their first day of opening way back last year. You can read about it here on my blog. http://providence1974.blogspot.sg/2012/08/lazing-afternoon-away-at-chye-seng-huat.htmlIt did create a fanfare when it was first open

It did create a fanfare when it was first opened and it lasted for months.. many of my friends were awed by the place and it's location and of course the name chosen. Who would have thought of using such a name for a cafe? It was unique.

Anyhow, I will just review what I have tried at CSHH so far.

Pancake- pancake itself was okay. More butter would be good..since there are 5 slices..One small piece is not gonna be enough for all 5. Blueberries ..our jaws dropped when we saw 5 tiny round things around the plate of pancakes. Cost of pancakes- $9 or $10 . 5 berries? really?

I'd heard great reviews of this place and was eager to try it out. As it turns out, from the pretentious try-hards hogging the limited seating to the mediocre food and limited menu, everything about this place screams overhype. The only good and real thing about this place is the coffee. Although their coffee menu is limited, their brews are rich, potent and full-bodied. A real zinger. That said, the coffee alone isn't mind-blowingly sublime enough to draw me back. I wouldn't go out of my way to a middle-of-nowhere place like that, just for coffee. Of course, coffee addicts may beg to differ. But, if you're nearby, at Lavender Food Centre or somewhere in the vicinity, you could swing by here for a strong cuppa coffee.

The Ham Omelette ($8.50) with Mushrooms ($2), toast, greens and half a supposedly grilled tomato (it was barely cooked). The omelette was average fare, and quite forgettable. Something a decent home cook could whip up easily.

The Pancake Stack with Blueberries ($10) was nice but pedestrian, and very reminiscent of Mickey D's version. And the abysmal number of blueberries were also quite miserable. 5 blueberries to 5 pancakes meant each pancake had its lone blueberry mate

We also sampled their cakes, which was such a big mistake. Their dry and uninspired cakes aren't worth the calories or moolah. The Old Fashioned Banana Cake ($4.50) was dry and lacking in that rich fragrance evocative of really good banana cakes fresh out of the oven.

I didn't try the smoked salmon sandwich and the ham and cheese omelette but I love the french toast! I guess its really hard for french toast to go wrong. For $7, I think the portion is just nice. It's really filling but I would love to have more maple syrup.

Love the cake and brownie that they have there too! They serve a pretty decent selection of pastries and cakes other than what they have on the menu like sandwiches, pancakes and french toast etc. They have daily pairings as well, do ask the staff for more details! However, they don't serve coffee the usual way, so forget about ordering latte, cuppacino, mocha etc. If you are a noob like me, ask the staff to explain to you what each type of coffee is. My espresso with milk is something like latte but I think its more bitter.

I really like the vintage furnishing of this place and the 360 degree coffee bar that is the first in Singapore, which allows customers to see how baristas prepare their coffee. A pity that I didn't have time to explore the Annex, an area for them to hold coffee tasting lessons. But I'm pretty sure it won't be my last time there so no worries about that!

Go have a cup of coffee during this long weekend and explore this charming place. I'm sure you'll like it as much as I do

The Service
The service is good and quick as the waitress were friendly and smiling at me.

The Ambience
The cafe is unique because it has a disguised shopfront and almost cannot find it.Heard from my friends that the entrance is through a side door, but I never imagined it to be "construction gate".
When I stepped inside, the interior was bigger than I expected and better furnished than I thought it would be. Combined With the loud music, the place felt very hip and cool

The Price
Spend about $30 for the whole bill and is worth it for the ambience and food !!

Overall
I will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this restaurant!

The moment i entered inside, it was full of coffee bean smell, which totally freshen up one's mind. Liked their interior seating concept. Round about table concept like bar counter, and side seatings for those who prefer to have a little privacy.

Menu has to be retrieved from the cashier area. They do not have a wide array of menu to select, but this makes my selection area much narrower
Food is awesome, for sure. They do take some time to serve the food, but it was acceptable given their crowded cafe. Probably 10-15 minutes of waiting time. Had their seared dory fish for $15. Their fish is fresh, and their sauce is good to go along with the fish and their miniature potatoes. Aso had their chicken patties for $12.50. Meat is chewy and juicy, and it doesn't just come in 2-3 quantity.

We ordered the Walnut Brownie and Hazelnut Ginger Tea Cake to share. Both were pretty average, a little on the dry side I must say. The tea cake was a little more interesting than the brownie, but the taste of ginger was very subtle - maybe a little too subtle.

Again, I didn't try their coffee so I guess to give this a proper review I'd have to make sure I give the double combo of coffee and desserts a go.

If I had not read about the place before going past it, I would not have guessed it was a coffee house, going by its name and exterior.

The entrance of Chye Seng Huat Hardware is via a large metal gate; one which most might think it leads to a garage.

Customers can choose to dine outside or within the store itself. Limited seating inside though, and things can get pretty cramp. For those who enjoy watching the baristas at work, they have the option of sitting at the counter.

The menu is a one-page tagged onto a board. Limited choices of drinks. Some tummy fillers, some specials.

This is truly a coffee place, no fanciful variants of coffee-infused drinks to be expected here. Cappuccino, though not stated on the menu, is available.

Average price per drink is S$5.50. Slightly cheaper for the "Mini" - a cup-size so small, I paid the additional for a larger cup.

No doubt, the coffee was good! Enough crema and the taste was just right. Not overdone nor too burnt. Sweetness was just right for me. Additional sugar can be added from the side corner, where one can also pour out some cold lemon water for oneself.

I have heard much about how nice the cakes were. I was however, too full from lunch to be tempted by any.

When the crowd increased, the place got a little too noisy for my liking. Preferring it to be quieter, having a relaxed afternoon drink.

The owners of the joint bought over one of the many hardware stores at Tyrwhitt Road and retained its name as well as exterior for a more quirky experience I guess.

The place wasn't difficult to find and parking was plentiful (park at Jalan Besar stadium). What was interesting is that the entrance to the cafe is via an old steel gate at the side. Being a Saturday, the place was understandably packed with a young and hip crowd of 20 somethings sipping delicately on their espressos and enjoying a sweet treat or two. I obviously didn't belong there.

Espresso + Water - I am not much of a coffee drinker/fan hence I got this to try. My verdict? I still know nuts about coffee and I think I'll stick to drinking Chinese tea,

Chicken Patties - The chicken patties tasted very "Thai inspired" with kaffir lime leaf, coriander and chilli. It wasn't spicy but it tasted very similar to Thai fish cake, albeit of a different texture. The meat was loosely packed and came across as excessively oily. It was so bad that I felt nauseous after the second piece. At that point in time, it really didn't matter if the ingredients were organic or not (as stated in the menu's description). All I wanted to do was to regurgitate everything out. CSHH should probably look into serving bread alongside this dish.

Beef Patties - Now this fared slightly better than the chicken patties. However, they did come across as too dry but had bits of fat within for extra texture and flavouring. 4 pieces was my max before I started feeling woozy again. As with the chicken, bread or some other form of carbohydrate would be good.

French Toast - And for dessert, we had the french toasts, which were thick and a little cushy but sadly, lacking in the all essential egg taste. Coupled with a runny syrup, it wasn't that great a dessert. But hey, it's only $7.50.

Only cash is accepted at this joint and honestly, forking out $43 for the less than desirable patties, a french toast, a small glass of watermelon juice and a cup of coffee just doesn't quite cut it. Granted, I am not a coffee drinker but based on the food they serve, I wonder what the hype is all about.

Good to go if I am in the neighborhood but not enough to make it a destination. It's so popular these days that it is virtually impossible to get a spot indoors. If you come in a group (more than 3 or 4), you probably have to sit out in the yard. Not exactly fun if the weather is hot like these couple of weeks.

I wanted a snack with my coffee, and noticed they had a set meal with baked goods and coffee. So for $10 I got a cup of the daily roast (regular coffee) and 5 raspberry financier cakes. The cakes were moist and not to sweet with the flavour of fresh raspberries - delicious! They're also perfect for sharing. My coffee was dark and rich, but it was quite a small serving for brewed coffee - I definitely could have drank a couple more!

I'd read that the cafe had developed quite a following, so I went on a Tuesday afternoon around 3pm hoping to avoid the crowds. All of the tables were full, but we were able to get 3 seats together at the coffee bar no problem. On weekends it's standing room only!

Definitely worth checking out if you like trendy cafes!
