Shanghai Spicy & Sour Soup $8.50. I had tried this before during my visit with my friend earlier. Truly taste delicious! However the taste is a bit spicy as I don’t take spicy foods. But the texture of the soup is not too starchy and you will enjoy sipping it over and over again.

It’s a must try dish in your list if you are dropping by. King Sized Nanxiang Crab Roe Steamed Soup Bun @ $7.80. This is simply rich soup filled with crab roe bites. Becareful it’s hot when you are sipping away with the straws. It’s like drinking a bowl of soup but you are drinking the soup from XL size bun instead.

We also had Braised Lion Head balls also known as 狮子头. It is recommended by the Director of Procurement himself during the food tasting. He also shared with us that this dish was designed to suit to Singaporean’s health conscious mind. They only use 20% fats unlike in China that uses 40% ingredients and 50% fats for the balls. The balls are crunchy as it contains chestnuts in the ingredient.

It was a wonderful moments with sharing session with the person-in-charge where he brought us back to history of the dishes. It would be ideal to have family or friends gathering here.

Braised Crab Roe ‘Lion Head’ ($13.80/ 3pcs)
Very juicy meatballs. Size of the meatballs fall down my expectation. Should be much bigger.

Overall I feel that the food here taste better than the Shanghai outlet as the food here is not so oily. Could be because the Shanghai is forever long queue, been a tourist hot spot.

I'm skeptical of Chinese restaurants that try to offer authentic Chinese cuisine from different parts of China. Nothing beats the real thing. Period. Worse are chains that duplicate 'authenticity'. Nanxiang tries and it's really not too bad if your standards are not exacting. Just a couple of recommendations: King Sized Nanxiang Crab Roe Steamed Soup Bun and Drunken Chicken. The latter has solid sauce with obvious alcohol whereas the Soup Bun is huge without stingy-ness in the crab roe.

Shang Hai Sour and Spicy Soup, $8.50
Suan la tang was indeed spicy and hot. But it's still bearable. The manager specifically told us that the style of this soup has been altered to suit Singaporeans' likings. The china version tends towards an oiler and spicier taste. Diners are free to add on vinegar to enhance the soup as well. PS: Vinegar indeed makes the soup taste better!

鲜肉小笼,Xiao Long Bao $8.80
The XLB's history goes all the way back 18th century, slowly evolving over the years to cater to different generation's likings. Wondering why there's soup inside the humble looking XLB, the culprit that scalds your tongue? That's because they are meant to add juice for the "xiao long bong" so that it isn't too dry for consumption. Oh I loveee XLB.

蟹黄灌汤包, King Sized Nanxiang Crab Roe Steamed Soup Bun
$7.80

Firstly, what a long name! Haha
Xie huang guan tang bao: the very famous bun that creates a large exciting commotion upon it's entrance. Hahaha am I exaggerating? NO, because the size of this bun is just ginormous! Pry it open and you'll be glad to take a sip of the authentic crab roe soup within in. We were all exclaiming how the soup taste so much better than those in XLB's. You really got to try it to believe it.

Braised lion head, 狮子头
Meatballs entirely made of chunky pork and a little hint of radish and minced meat, this gives a really satisfying and filling sensation. The sauce tends more towards the sweeter side, non-spicy.

蟹黄粉皮 Xie Huang Fen Pi

As much as it seems glue-y and sticky, don't worry because in real life it isn't too clumpy. Instead, the kway teow is really smooth and it glides down your throat without much need of chewing. Add in vinegar again to enhance the taste! We all agree it tasted better after adding vinegar.

Overall, I thought this place really served good chinese cuisine, and in fact faired better than crystal jade! Despite that, I would say they are a close fight with Paradise Dynasty though.
Lastly, I would like reiterate that the Guang Tang Bao is really worth a try!

The prices are reasonable for adults and thus perfect for family lunch/dinner, but probably a little steep for students like me.

Hope you liked this review!

We choose noodles instead of rice. Although the noodles looks normal and not that appealing but trust me. The taste proves that we can never judge the appearance of the presentation. Although first impression may widen your appertizer.

Peking Duck Skin Wrapped with egg crepe.
As usual, taste is cunchy because of the crispy skin and also the slices of spring onion to go with it. A little bit of special sweet sauce does the trick to make the taste perfect

1) rice wine white chicken - cold styled, so some people may not accept it as a delicacy. the alcohol taste was strong, but beauty food conscious consumers will like the collagen from the skin.

2) goose web - another collagen food, but personally I didn't like how it looks like it was killed, defeathered and served immediately. It'll probably be a favourite among the elderly.

3) fried carrot cake - very crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. nicely seasoned and cooked, not too oily.

4) braised "lion head" - gigantic scrumptious meatball topped with delectable oyster sauce.

5) black bean steamed pork ribs - tender and juicy. I didn't eat too much of it cos there's more "ho liao" to come..

6) spring roll - crispy jam packed with shredded vegetables. we ordered more than one plate of this cos it was so good.

7) sweet and sour pork - saucy goodness with tender (hope i'm not over using this description, just speaking my mind here) juicy meat paired off with the tanginess of the pineapple.

8) spring onion omelette - only had a bit of it, it was alright.

9) steamed yam cake - I'm not a fan of yam, but from what I heard, it was so so, and there were many of it left after we were done eating.

10) chicken feet - it was soft and chewy. the sauce is sweet and spicy.

11) Charsiew Pau - the ratio of the filling was just right, buns was soft and fluffy. It was piping hot when they served it and that kodak moment when you see smoke flow out of the buns when you tear them open under the light

12) Century Egg Congee - The combination of creamy/jelly century eggs and the smooth liquid paste of "rice" melting in your mouth is really pleasant. careful hot! don't burn your tongue and ruin the rest of the buffet.

13) Shen Jian Pau - Base is fried crispy and top is steamed soft! Unique!

14) Gyoza/Guo Tie - Crispy and nice charred texture on the outside and fulfilling filling inside. Wolfed it down in one big bite!

15) Har Gaw / Steamed Shrimp Dumpling - soft and sticky skin nicely folded/wrapped with precision. Prawns inside are big,soft-crunchy and fresh.

16) Fried Seafood Dumpling - Crunchy skin , it's not stale like some places. inside again, generous filling.

17) Sichuan Brinjal - saucy spicy sichuan with soft well cooked brinjal that doesn't melt/"rot" (from overcooking). still holds it's beautiful shape and colour.

18) Golden Pumpkin Cake - it was so so. alot left over.

19) Fishroe Siu Mai - Tasty and perfectly cooked and not all hard/chewy like you get with some places. One firm bite seals the deal.

20) Mango Fried Chicken - Again, tender tasty chicken that's paired off well with diced mangos. Appetite restarted!

21) Seafood Fried Beancurd Skin - very oily. soaked by the beancurd skin , oozes upon first bite

22) Xiao Long Bao - Eat with care, because the "soup" inside the soft and thin "skin" is piping hot. Once you bite and slurp at the same time, it's heaven, once you burn your tongue, it's hell.It tastes really really good.We wished we could order more as there was a limit.

23) Fried Siu Mai - yuck. it was burnt and cold (as if it was left on the server shelf) not worth mentioning. basically a combination of #19. without the fishroe and #16.

24) Spinach - bland. but gotta have some vege to balance with all the meat.

25) San Lou Horfun - There's fish in here, but i personally feel that the whole thing lacks wok hei. making it taste plain.

26) Rojiak Porkrib - Unique but in my opinion, it's either not properly fused or the sauce was done wrong.

27) Shanghai Fried Rice - fragrant, BUT! where's the salted fish when you need it!? could have worked.

-------------------------

Overall dining experience, it was fun to have the variety, but service was poor and staff were disorganised, food came in slow at times and came in one shot couldn't fit on the table.

P.S : sorry the images are small when uploaded to OpenRice. the full resolution you can see the images individually but there're too many dishes as you can upload only 8 photos.

Stir-fried duck meat (forgot the exact name)

Of course, we ordered other food as well.. Siew Mai, Har Gow, Xiao Long Bao etc..
The food came in pretty big portion for two for a buffet (My expectation for buffet ala carte supposed to be sample size). Sweet and sour pork and pork ribs were starchy and sticky. It's very "gor gor", I have no idea why..
Alot of the steamed dim sum like har gow and xiao long bao have quite thick skin and the prawns tasted like crystal prawns.
The two dishes that won us over was the duck meat and this Shanghai stir fried noodle.
We ordered these two dishes twice despite being damn full.
The duck meat was tasty and well-cooked, and the meat doesn't get stucked in your teeth when bitten.
The fried noodle uses la mian, which gives a chewy texture. If i'm not wrong, they fried it with XO sauce. However, the standard was not consistent. Our 2nd round order (when the crowd came in) was way lousier tasting as compared to the first round's.

Dim sum wasn't fantastic although they specialise in it (I think?). I feel that the ala carte dishes were better.
The voucher cost $17.40 per person for weekday high tea, 3-5pm, excluding GST.
Our bill was about $23 per person after including GST and I would say for the variety, it was worth it.

The service was not very good though there were many staff around. Some of our dishes took way too long to arrive and some orders were missed out.
One bad experience with a staff. I called in to make a reservation a day before. It was the longest time I've ever taken to get my reservation done.
A woman with China accent picked up. I said I wanted to make a reservation, she said hold on. Okay, so in the background I heard her settling bill with a customer. I'm fine with it..
After about 3-4 mins, she came back and said in Mandarin "you want to make a reservation? wait a while".
So I waited again and this time round, I heard her talking and laughing to her colleague in the background. Waited for another 2-3 mins and she finally came back to take down my reservation.

The lion head is very well done. The portion of fats and meat is balanced. When you put the meat in mouth, it sort of melted away, leaving you with a pleasant oyster & soy sauce fragrant.

The crispy cod fish is slightly disappointing though. The dishes are served too fast, that the fish was left on the table for a while before I get to it. The cold cod fish is definitely not too pleasant in taste, and it's no longer crispy after soaking in the sauce for long.

Spring onion noodle with lion head ($8.30) on the other hand, is strong in flavour. The lion head (minced meat ball) is nicely done, well, perhaps it contained enough fats that it just sort of melted in your mouth. Sinful yet tastes good.

I always like to order durian ball ($3.60) when dine in here. However, it always makes me feeling guilty for it, as the aroma of the durian is so strong (tables in the restaurant are set very close to each other too)! One bite into it, I can always hear people surrounding whispering:"durian? did you smell durian? where's that smell came from?" The durian pulp is filled in the glutinous rice ball and served cold, yummy!

This rice may look like the usual fried rice which you can from anywhere, but the taste is even better and is a more healthier choice to everyone too. Pan fried slice pork are added in the rice which are chewy and not too oily. The rice has been cooked with lots of fresh chopped celery and green vegetables which really added the nutritious value to this dish. Even though no fanciful ingredients are found in it, the quality of this dish already has won the hearts from the regular customers.

The chicken meat is tender and juicy, and love those really smooth glossy chicken skin which taste very delicious too. It is not too oily and great to eat it with a bowl of rice as well.

We didn't have the original steamed bun this time, but instead, we ordered the vegetable and pork filling steamed bun ($7.3). The filling is well-seasoned and generally tastes pretty good, but I personally will still prefer the original steamed bun with the rich flavour fragrant oil. The Braised lion head, 4 pieces ($6.8) is delicious. The minced meat is so well-marinated, the diced chestnuts give a good texture to the meatball. The sauce that used to saute the meatballs is good to go with rice.

Stir-fried green bean noodles with crab roe ($13.3) is a must-try I reckon! The crab roe gravy is so strong of the fresh seafood flavour, the green bean noodles has a kuey teow texture, but lighter and thinner. Thumbs up!

We had Salt & pepper Cashew nut pastry ($3.5) as desserts. It's my first try of this pastry, and I reckon the nutty taste of cashews is pleasantly delicious. With the sesame on top, it's a doubled pleasant.
