Halloween has crept up on us once again and my post today is to show you where to have a "horror-ween" good time. Halloween is not widely celebrated in Singapore, in fact this year there's only the Halloween Horror Nights 5 that is happening. (I miss Sentosa Spooktacular) So you can imagine the crowds and queues there. Alternatively, one could actually celebrate Halloween by having a good meal, chit-chatting and just chill.

ROCKY Yakiniku is one place I would recommend going to. Located at the 4th floor of Bugis+, it was fairly easy to spot this restaurant due to the Halloween decorations outside. ROCKU Yakiniku is a casual, upbeat and edgy restaurant that brings a totally fresh concept to the traditional Yakiniku joints. It's a blend of traditional style of Japanese dining with modern entertainment which perfectly characterize the Japanese pop culture.The pullers there did a fantastic job by dressing up according to the Halloween theme. They are not to frighten you away but are more than happy to welcome you in. Enter if you dare! There's no turning back. So follow me in!

Loving the upbeat and lively atmosphere of the interior of the restaurant. I felt like I just stepped into a pub but one which plays all my favourite songs which I can sing along to! That is how ROCKU entertains and enthralls their guests, with modern music of Korean, Japanese, English and Mandarin Pop-Rock variety, catering to the younger patrons who have become more international in their music taste.

There's a stage in the middle which is for Live Band happening every Thursday to Saturday from 7pm to 10pm. Tonight's singer is Mint which most of us bloggers would have known too as she's a blogger as well. Aspiring singers can go up there to sing together as well. Check out short performance here.

Thursday: Mint and Morgan

Friday: Regine and Ernest

Saturday: Jia Ling and Ernest

HORROR-WEEN MOCKTAIL

$16.90++ Per Jug

We begin our meal with the Horror-ween Mocktail. We chose the Spooky Passion (Passionfruit mocktail) and Bloody Thirsty (Strawberry mocktail). The drinks all have "eyeballs" in it and for the Strawberry mocktail, we even have to inject in the red syrup. Check out my instagram video here.

COMPLIMENTARY ROCKU BOMB WELCOME DRINK

One of the main highlights of the night was this drink called the Rocku Bomb Welcome Drink. Be prepared for some shouting and table banging as you try to get that shot of sake to drop into the glass of beer cocktail. We had so much fun doing that. Check out my short instagram video on how we did it here. Best of all, it's complimentary for all customers every Monday to Thursday (while stocks last).

YAKINIKU AND BEER BUFFET

$35.90++ Per Pax

For $35.90++ per pax, you get to enjoy unlimited servings of meat, vegetable and side dishes from their buffet spread with free-flow beer! This is super duper worth it! Available every Sunday to Thursday from 6pm to 10pm.

The joy of cooking your meat and vegetable on the sizzling hot charcoal grill. One thing to bear in mind is not to leave your food on the grill for too long as the fire is really very strong. We burnt some vegetables in the beginning.

What better way to enjoy your veggies, seafood and meat at the same time? Meat lover will be able to enjoy the tantalizing cuts of meat, ranging from chicken, pork and beef. For the beef lovers, you will be able to enjoy beef cuts such as strip loin, short rib and chuck tender, all under one roof.

Not forgetting to check out their buffet counter for the appetizer, sauces, desserts and some Halloween edition food items!

The three main sauces available are sweet miso, spicy miso and ponzu sauce.

Appetizer from the buffet counter.

Halloween edition food items. Hotdog and cheese as chopped fingers and coloured eggs. Creative!

Very unique green and pink chawanmushi.

Really yummy side dishes that we had. Yes, they have free flow prawn and salmon too for a different buffet package.

Equipped with high performance exhaust system that take care of the smoke, I remain comfortable in the air-conditioned environment throughout my meal. No smelling like BBQ food when I left the place.

BUFFET

Free flow meat and 20 additional dishes from their delectable buffet spread

Lunch Buffet $15.90++

Additional $3 on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun), eve of public holidays and public holidays

100 min per session

Dinner Weekday Buffet $25.90++

100 min per session

Dinner Weekend Buffet $32.90++

Since we were in the East area, we decided we need to explore around here. This cafe was recommended by Mich when she saw my photo postings on Instagram that I was nearby.

Sinpopo Brand is a modern cafe with retro elements in the interior. This school attendance register is actually the menu.

Quotes from famous people over the walls.

What we ordered. As we have already eaten our dinner, we only ordered their starters. The dessert I wanted was not available so I guess will have to leave the mains and desserts till the next time I'm here. Presentation of the food is simple, as seen, were placed on the metal tray. Food served is pipping hot and tasty. What I like most is their different sauces for the two different side dishes. Instead of giving you just the same chili sauce, the sauce for both the crab wantons and prawn paste chicken wings are different and really cater to that dish itself.

1. Katong Jelly $7.00

"A favourite from the 1960s brought back by Sinpopo. Simply refreshing - lemonade, agar agar, soda and more"

2. Crab Wantons $8.00

"Creamy crabmeat stuffed in crispy wanton skins served with a house dip"

3. Har Jeong Kai Wings $6.00

"The original & authentic way it is done. Not the fake reddish kind"

Total cost for the meal: $24.70 (including GST and service charge)

I will definitely be back again!

The first time I visited Miam Miam was on a very random occasion whereby we were so tired and hungry from the shopping that we just want to get a seat and grab something to eat. Miam Miam happens to be the first cafe we saw. The dining space is casual and the open concept gives a full view of their centerpiece kitchen. It was so long ago and I only remembered we ordered one of their pasta and find it very unique. We keep saying that we will be back but eventually there's too many new restaurants/cafes to try out.

So I was super excited when Jess extended her invites to me for their food tasting session. It was after this dinner that I not only get to try out some of their signature dishes but also understand more about this place. First and foremost, let's start with the name of this cafe. It's not call Miam Miam just because it sounds nice, but it's actually means Yum Yum in French. Incidentally, Miam Miam is a French-Japanese cafe kitchen offering delectable dishes made from scratch and with top-grade ingredients.

Dishes are at price range which are pretty comfortable to most of us with the highest priced item only at $18.80. They believe that exquisite flavours should not only be for the elite, so they are committed to deliver amazing flavours at affordable prices to the masses.

There was quite a bit of waiting time for the food to be served but that is only because their kitchen operations follow the industry's best practices to deliver consistently hot and fresh meal. Even though they might have already know the dishes to be served to us and could have prepared in advance, they did not do that.

So, meanwhile I ordered myself a cup of Matcha White Chocolate (S$7.80). I fall in love with it from the first sip. The creamy white chocolate combines with the green tea creates a warm, smooth and not too sweet drink that is perfect for any time of the day. Grade 1 matcha is used in all their matcha drinks.

The first main dish that was served is their Riz Noir/Squid Ink Rice (S$16.50). The squid ink rice was well camouflage with the serving pan and I have to brighten the photo. It's made with top grade ika sumi powder imported from Hokkaido. Hidden inside the rice are assorted seafood made up of prawns, squids and clams. The omu egg taste a bit blend by itself so have to eat with the rice. The only concern about this dish is the consciousness of getting black teeth. We all ate this in a very careful manners. Haha.

Modern Yaki (S$14.80) is extremely delicious. It was aglio olio with all my favourite ingredients and toppings. Cabbages, mushrooms, bonito flakes, seaweeds, Japanese mayonnaise, sesame and not forgetting an omelette. Almost all of their dishes would include egg. I was told that each portion of their raw pasta is measured at 110g and is then doused in boiling water and cooked for exactly 7.5 minutes to achieve the perfect bite and texture. This perfectly engineered dish came about because the kitchen at Miam Miam subscribes to the Japanese ideologies of kaizen and kanban in its food and preparation practices. Kaizen refers to the practice of continuous improvement and kanban of a scheduling system that ensures lean and just-in-time production. The precise and disciplined approach can be tasted in each plate of their pasta.

The next dish is Souffle Au Curry (S$15.50). This dish was really a big eye opener to me. My impression of souffle is only for dessert, never thought that it could be made into a main course by itself. It was really amazing to find curry rice with pork, broccoli, cheese and egg inside. The souffle is so fluffy it just melts in your mouth.

Take a break and drink some ice-water. Even their ice water is so special. Instead of using lemon slices, slices of green apple and mint leaves are used.

Yay, and dessert was served! This is their Famous French Toast (S$9.80). The whipped cream is home made with egg white and sugar. Perfect with the maple syrup, just PERFECT! Love it.

Yah, the Souffle that I know of. Valrhona Chocolate Souffle (S$13.80). If the French Toast is perfect, this is happiness! They have other flavours like vanilla and matcha too. I think I'm going back soon again to try their vanilla souffle.

Spuds & Aprons serves good east-and-west dishes with colourful cocktails while overlooking the view the cable cars, harbour and Sentosa Island. Choose to sit comfortably in the air-conditioned Dining Room or relax in the alfresco Garden. There will even be live band performances every Friday and Saturday evening. The alfresco Garden has a seating capacity of 160 pax; and the indoor Dining Room has a seating capacity of 48 pax.

The warm light at the Dining Room makes the whole restaurant looks super elegant and set a relaxing mood.

The table arrangement is pretty. Jess and I both felt so welcome and we love the mini cable car paper holder. It was super cute!

Now come photos of the scrumptious meal that we had. Start off with the delightful and refreshing Festive Welcome Mocktail - Santa-rina (Only available in the Festive Ala Carte Menu). The top layer of powdered sugar looks like snow.

The first appetizer served was the Festive Wicked Fries (Only available in the Festive Ala Carte Menu). This is definitely for cheese lover cause it's made up of 6 different kind of cheese! Also found in this dish are Turkey bacon, ham and cranberries. Once you start, you can't stop. Was told that the difference between this dish to the usual dish they sold was that instead of gravy, they've changed to cream. A perfect combination. I love it.

The second appetizer served to us was the Pan Fried Foie Gras. This is made of duck liver. At the side are spinach, walnuts and poached egg. I don't take Foie Gras but I try to eat half of it. It taste subtle and seems to have the melt in the mouth feeling.

The third appetizer served Grilled Tako. Ours is in the portion for tasting only. Actual dish would definitely be bigger. It's like a mix of salad with those jelly cold dish with the grilled tako. The whole dish is crunchy, chewy and opens up your taste buds.

Our first main course is Grilled King Prawns Pasta. The pasta is cooked with squid ink thus the black colour. I felt that the colour combination of the black pasta and the bright red king prawns matches better compared to pairing it with the normal colour pasta. This dish is a bit spicy, so get your water prepared.

Our second main course is Baked Asian Turkey Roll (Only available in the Festive Ala Carte Menu). This is a more interesting dish whereby the turkey meat is mixed with tomatoes before baked. It comes with butternut pumpkin puree.

Dessert was Mountain of Happiness. Yes, it's literally a mountain of 16 scoops of ice-creams!!! Some of the flavours are Mango Sorbet, Vanilla, Belgium Chocolate, Green Tea, Haagen Daz, Rum and Rasin, Strawberry and Raspberry. Ice-cream for desserts can never go wrong and one can never be too full for ice-cream.

There's even a sort of ongoing challenge to whoever can finish the 16 scoop of ice-cream in 15 minutes can get this whole ice-cream dessert ON THE HOUSE! Seems quite impossible but they told us that there's actually one guy who did it. They even printed this apron to give out to whoever completed the challenge. I don't know how anyone can complete this challenge. For me, ice-cream have to be savour slowly to enjoy the taste.

Definitely a great and memorable dining experience for me. Enjoy the good food and great accompany. Their Festive Set Lunch are priced below $40 and I personally can say that it's super worth the price. The place will also be decorated with colourful festive decors and there will be a six-feet-tall ice-cream tree, macaroon tree and cutlery trees made up of colourful utensils for many photos taking opportunities.

Movember at Flee Away Cafe Smile Nov 18, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café

Remember my previous post on Movember (Read post here), about growing a moustache during the month of November to create awareness in support of Men's health issues? I've found a cafe that fully endorse this good cause!

Flee Away Cafe was on my Instagram and I checked my instagram account, @chewyjas hourly (Oops, later my boss think I'm not working) daily so I am sort of curious about their Le Char Kuey which is their specialty.Image Source: https://www.facebook.com/fleeawaycafe

On that fateful day, I saw how the staff were promoting on Movember with the props and felt that it might be a good opportunity to give them a visit.There are plenty of these kind of moustache props to play around with and they've also got different designs. Took so much photos even before I start ordering. The bf looking sad. I used a different moustache design on him but he look so sad. I see already also feel sad. Must be too hungry!

Stopped selfie-ing and let's see what to order. A very simple one page menu where the food and desserts are all in. No need to headache over what to eat.

Le Char Kuey explained! Basically it's the replace of a French Baguette with dough fritter. Very creative right? Le is derived from French and Char Kuey is simply the fried You Tiao in Chinese.

Le Char Kuey with Dry Laksa ($15.50). This is marked with chef recommendation. The good thing about eating this dish is that I need not worry about any laksa gravy staining on my nice top! The taste of laksa is not even being compromise and they really put in every ingredients you will find in a real bowl of laksa. Definitely a must-order dish. Thumbs up for the creativity and innovation.

Salmon with Capers, Onions and Cream Cheese ($15.50). After eating the one filled with dry laksa, this tend to be more of a safe option. Nothing much to be raved about. Still good though.

Irish Cream Mud Pie ($9.50). This is based on the chef's recommendation sign again. Yummy dessert after the meal. It's made of chocolate ice cream with a bit of irish cream liquor and topped with white and dark chocolate flakes. It's yummy but I felt that the price is a bit too high for desserts.The bf feeling happier after eating! smile

The whole cafe gives me a very cozy and happy feeling. Every inch of this little cafe is well decorated with old school items.

This sewing machine belongs to my grandma's generation!

After eating, you can also shop at their "retail corner". You might just get to find that nostalgic toys that you've been looking high and low for.

Maps for tourists are well stashed.

Before we left the cafe, found this two cinema seats that were different from the rest overlooking the small road outside. I guess it's great to sometime slow down, take a break and enjoy.Total damage was $40.50 for this meal.

This cafe don't charge GST or Service Charges.
