Sunday Brunch Buffet. Smile Mar 06, 2014
Categories : Japanese | Seafood | Buffet

I decided to make a reservation as crowd somewhat expected given its popularity. I attempted to do so by written a private message to the administrator of their facebook page. The response was a pretty quick one and the reservation confirmed as stated in the reply. I was there on time but was a little taken aback when realised the reservation was not listed. Nonetheless, a table for 2 was quickly assigned as we happened to be amongst the first few there that morning. The restaurant was not too crowded then so i kinda speculate reservation for a small group might not be necessary.

We were expected to pay up front before led to our table by a friendly waitress. The brunch buffet is priced at $37.80++per pax.

The highlight of this buffet was the Snow Crab, Wagyu Beef, Kurobuta, Sashimi and free flow of Sapporo Beer.

The most popular item was no doubt those legs of Snow Crab. It was almost gone when i was there but the replenishment was pretty prompt to meet its demand. There were also the fresh tasting scallop, salmon and prawn sashima available right there.

There are those little clips with the table number on the table to be used in ordering the Teppanyaki and Sukiyaki dishes. The most popular has to be the Wagyu Beef Teppanyaki. The clip was to be clicked along the signboard to order and it was then served right to the table when ready. The meat was served raw on hot plate with slices of onion and black pepper sauce added. The black pepper sauce was rather well-balanced and even a non-lover like myself has not much issue in accepting it.

You then cooked it to your preferred doneness to give it the perfect texture to suit your palate. It generally tasted fresh with just the right amount of black pepper sauce to give it the right flavor.

We tried the Snow Crab Sukiyaki. It was served with a chunky piece from the joint of the leg with enoki mushroom and vegetable. We enjoyed it with extra pieces of Snow Crab legs added.

We managed to try the Kurobuta Sukiyaki too. Both tasted equally enjoyable.

The grilled Enoki Beef Roll is a must try item. It was served in 3 pieces on a hot plate. The texture of the beef was done just right to go with the enoki mushroom and the sauce complemented it nicely.

Some of the items from the buffet spread including a wide range of different types of sushi for selection. The Yakitori were pre-prepared and left it for selection. It was still a tasty choice that i enjoyed pretty much.

There were an extensive range of fried items like Fried Salmon Skin, Prawn Tempura, Potato Cutlet etc available. And, there were a limited selection of cooked foods like Fried Rice, Beef Stew, Seafood Spaghetti and Stir-fried Broccoli available on that day.

One of the most popular choice there got to be the Mentaiko Scallops. There were so many clips left on the signboard leaving a little space for more. The waiting time was slightly longer. You might want to take note that a clip is only for a single serving. If you want more then you are expected to put in more clips and it might be a wiser decision to save waiting time as it could be quite lengthy. The waiting time was definitely worth while as we enjoyed the nicely done scallop served with mayonnaise.

The selection of desserts was decent. The choices including different types of cakes, cream puffs, chocolate eclair and the famous Haagen Dazs ice-cream served with waffle biscuits and cones.

The free-flow of Sapporo Beer is only limited from 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm. There is a counter beside the drink station for redemption upon the presentation of receipt. Each person is only allowed to redeem a bottle at a time. You are expected to bring back the empty bottle to redeem for more during that specific 1 hour.

The buffet spread though not too extensive but it is still a better choice as compared to the other supposedly famous Japanese Buffet Restaurant though the normal lunch buffet at $24.80++ might be of a more value for money choice.

It was a pleasant experience and i am likely to be back though not too soon.

I was there before attending a movie event nearby on a Wednesday evening. Though my favourite Chicken Rice is located in the same coffee shop but my purpose is for that humble looking stall that supposedly served one of the yummiest burgers in town. I was there for a few times but no luck since their relocation in August 2013 from Bestway Building near Shenton Way to this coffee shop at Waterloo Street.

It must be my lucky day on that day. I could not quite describe the overwhelming excitement then. This was the first time when i chanced upon them when the shutter of the stall is not down. No one was there at that moment. I spent a bit of time to study their menu board and decided what to eat. I waited for a few moments then i spotted a tall chap waving his hand while walking towards us.

That tall chap is the owner cum chef of this stall named Keith. He greeted us then to take down our orders. We decided to go with THE FAT ELVIS ($11) and BACON CHEESE BURGER ($9.50). We decided to upgrade the fries for one of the sets to Truffle Fries for a difference of $2 paid. We were informed that only 2 slices of pork bacon were left for the day. He offered to use the Turkey Bacon for one of the burgers and took out $1 from the price. We were asked for the expected done-ness for the patties of both burgers. We decided to have it at medium and medium-well respectively.

There is not much about ambience to talk about here as it is a typical coffee shop set-up. It tends to be a little crowded during lunch and dinner. And most of the people came for that famous Chicken Rice as mentioned by Keith.

That man was working all alone. I offered to make the payment first but was told to do it later. I was not quite sure whether self-service is expected so we decided to sit at the table right in front of the stall.

The waiting time was about 15 minutes or so. He approached our table with THE FAT ELVIS ($11) first. It is a tall burger nicely stacked with all the ingredients in between the buns held together by a satay stick. I was a little skeptical at first when i read the description of the burger stated on the menu.
The Fat Elvis ($11).

The Fat Elvis ($11).

This is their best selling burger and listed as one of the 5 fave artisanal burgers by Makansutra. It is actually a beef burger loaded with Peanut Butter, Crispy Bacon and the least expected Tempura Banana.

I honestly do not know what to expect from the combination of Peanut Butter with Tempura Banana. The taste of both is actually 2 extremes. I quickly picked up my camera and shooting it. When seeing me doing so, Keith approached our table with a spray bottle consisting the truffle oil to spray a few times on the fries as he said the taste might not be too intense if the fries were left for a little too long. Such effort is commendable. I could feel his passion in presenting the best possible taste to his customers.

I continued to shoot another few pictures before deciding to take a bite of the fries. I could distinctly taste the flavor derived from the truffle oil. It still tasted good even after it turned soggy. The portion of the fries served was definitely generous.

I was eager to have my first mouthful with great anticipation. I decided to have it cut into halves to share it with my dinner partner. I tasted the peanut butter coated crispy bacon first. I totally never quite expect the sweet taste of the creamy peanut butter to complement the crispiness and the taste of bacon so completely. The harmonious combination further amazed me when i took a bite of it with slices of tempura banana. It just went well. The sweetness of the banana blended in perfectly. The patty was done nicely at medium as requested. It was still beautifully pink right within. It was grilled delightfully to give it the desired flavor and the texture. The freshly baked brioche buns tasted impressively soft with an amazing fluffiness. I could not tell the difference between the pork bacon and turkey bacon though Keith insisted that pork bacon tasted much better.

The overall taste was quite uniquely unforgettable. It definitely amongst one of the better burgers that i ever tasted.
Bacon Cheese Burger ($9.50).

Bacon Cheese Burger ($9.50).

The BACON CHEESE BURGER ($9.50) is actually the upgraded version from their basic burger. The nicely grilled 120 grams all beef patty though requested to be done at medium-well but it still has a pretty pinkishness in it.

It was not overly done but still retained the expected tenderness and juiciness. A piece of melted Monterey Jack Cheese was laid on it before topped with strips of crispy bacon in between the freshly baked brioche buns.

The overall taste made this a worthy burger under $10. It definitely tasted good though not quite outstanding.

While eating, Keith came over to chat. He happened to visit Hong Kong in last December too so we started sharing our food experiences and some of those eateries worth visiting there. I attempted to compare his burgers to another burger outlet located in a coffee shop at Bukit Merah. And, we actually enjoyed his burgers much more at a lower price range. We were told to come back to try the BBQ PORK next round as it is one of the creations nicely crafted to give it the perfect taste. And, the next burger that i want to try is THE MUSHROOM burger.

We requested Keith to post for a picture and he spontaneously obliged. So, here is the handsome and passionate Owner cum Chef of meat packing district that served one of the better burgers in town.

Grandma's Birthday Dinner. Smile Dec 01, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Zi Char

We brought our dearest Grandma there to celebrate her 85th Birthday. We were told no reservation is required if we reach before 6 pm as there are enough tables available at that time.

We managed to be there at about 5.30 pm and we were ushered to one of those bigger tables for 7 adults and 2 kids.

We were then presented with the menu and the friendly Auntie waited patiently for us to browse through the menu and decided what to eat. She even advised which dish contains pork when she knew our Indonesian helper would be eating with us. She attempted to recommend few seafood dishes as well as those new dishes on menu.

Bowls and plates with utensils and condiments were served soon after we ordered. Though we did not request but plates were given for the kids.

Fried Prawn Paste Chicken came first. Most dishes including this one served in the biggest portion. A total of 16 pieces were served. The chicken drums and mid-wings were seasoned well then coated in a thin layer of batter and deep-fried to near perfection. It was done well to give its skin a noticeable crispiness complemented with tender meat within. The kids particularly enjoyed this dish though the taste of prawn paste was not too distinctive.

Next, it came the Fried Prawn Roll. The prawn rolls were first steamed then chopped into the smaller pieces before coated with a thin layer of flour to deep fried. When it was served, the Auntie reminded us that the filling of this dish contains pork. It was nicely deep-fried to give it the desirable crispiness. It tasted good on its own but tasted even better if eaten with the accompanied sweet sauce.

The Longevity Noodles was served next. We were given the stir-fried and the braised version to choose. We opted for the latter. It was quite a big plate with fresh tasting ingredients like sliced abalone, prawns, squids, shiitake mushroom, sliced carrot and sliced hard-boiled egg. My Grandma particularly enjoyed it. She wanted a refill after her first bowl.

The Fried Egg Omelette with only prawns came next. Though this dish was meant for the kids but we specifically requested to omit the pork so our helper could have it too. It was a simple dish with comforting taste.

Herbal Duck Soup was recommended by the friendly Auntie. She suggested we go for a pot first and to order more if we like it. The herbal taste was a little overpowering. Some of us enjoyed it but some did not. It would be nicer if the duck meat was slightly softer.

Sweet & Sour Pork was our favourite dish. The chunky pieces of pork were deep-fried then stir-fried with the sweet & sour sauce with its other ingredients like the green pepper, red pepper, pineapple, onion and tomato to give it the desired taste. The sauce has got a well-balanced taste of sweetness and sourness that went well with rice.

The Fried Rice was served next. The portion was substantial to share amongst us. Though not the best tasting fried rice but it has got a comforting taste that we liked. The texture of the rice was rather grainy and not overly greasy but the wok taste seemed missing.

Braised Tofu with Mixed Vegetable served last. The deep-fried tofu was braised well with flat beans, cabbage, carrot, shitake mushroom and cauliflower etc. A comforting dish to go with rice.

It was an enjoyable dinner to celebrate our dearest Grandma's birthday as a family. And, the total bill was reasonably charged at $119.00.

Taiwanese Lunch. OK Dec 01, 2013
Categories : Taiwanese | Café

I went on a weekday for late lunch.

This Bistro offers an extensive menu of classic and contemporary Asian and Western Cuisine.

Their main feature has to be the Taiwan street foods like the Oyster Mee Sua, Braised Pork Rice and different types of Bubble Milk Tea.

Their main theme is around Jay Chou though never a fan of him but still find it to be quite interesting.

The cafe was rather quiet when we were there slightly after 2 pm. We were first greeted upon enter and ushered to a table for 3 right after then presented with the menu rather quickly. An order chit was given to indicate the items wanted. A friendly waitress approached our table and offered her assistance.

After some thoughts, we decided to have Stewed Pork Belly Rice 卤肉饭 ($3.80), Braised Beef Noodle 牛肉面 ($9.80), Salted Crispy Chicken 盐酥鸡 ($6.80) and Bubble Milk Tea 珍珠奶茶 ($4.80).

Some of their recommended dishes are XO Sauce Spicy Beef Fried Rice ($13.80), Golden Salted Yolk Prawn Balls ($14.80), Fried Shitake Mushroom ($8.80) and Taiwanese Meat ball Soup ($5.80).
Bubble Milk Tea 珍珠奶茶 ($4.80)

Bubble Milk Tea 珍珠奶茶 ($4.80)

The Bubble Milk Tea came first. Though not the best one that i ever tasted but it was generally alright. It has an acceptable level of sweetness with a good handful of tapioca balls in it. These tapioca balls were slightly smaller in size but with a delightful chewiness at just the right level of softness. The fragrant of tea and milk was rather well-balanced to give it just the desired taste.
Stewed Pork Belly Rice 卤肉饭 ($3.80)

Stewed Pork Belly Rice 卤肉饭 ($3.80)

This served next. A small portion of rice was served in a bowl covered with the braised pork belly then garnished with pickles and coriander. Perhaps it was the high anticipation that left me feeling disappointed. It did not taste as authentic as the one i had in Taipei and not even close to the one served by Shin Yeh in Singapore. The taste was rather mediocre with no distinctive fragrance of braised sauce.
Braised Beef Noodle 牛肉面 ($9.80)

Braised Beef Noodle 牛肉面 ($9.80)

The Braised Beef Noodle was delightful though. This was the best dish amongst all that we tried. It might not be as good as what i had tried in Taiwan but its taste was rather close and authentic. It was braised well with Chinese herbs to give it the aromatic taste together with the seasoning to acquire the right flavor. It tasted slightly spicy as the spiciness was enhanced by the dried chilli added.

It was served with a few chunky pieces of beef. It would definitely be nicer if the texture of these beef was slightly softer. It was a little more chewier than expected. Though the texture was not as desired but it was flavorsome. The noodle was cooked well to give it the likable softness and springiness. It was one of the better bowls of Braised Beef Noodle that i tasted in Singapore.
Salted Crispy Chicken 盐酥鸡 ($6.80)

Salted Crispy Chicken 盐酥鸡 ($6.80)

It did not fare as well as expected. It was slightly over deep-fried thus the color was a little darker with its taste slightly compromised. The taste of salt and pepper was seemed missing. It tasted like normal fried chicken pieces. Good thing was it tasted dry and not overly greasy. It served with 2 sticks of cucumber.

Though foods are not too impressive but the friendly service has left a good impression.

Gyoza Set Meals. Smile Nov 19, 2013
Categories : Japanese

The newest outlet by Keisuke Tokyo located at the corner of Orchid Hotel, a stone's throw from one of their other outlets.

This is a 18-seaters all-gyoza restaurant offers 3 different kinds of pan-fried dumplings to match with various side dishes, soup and rice as a set meal.

How to order:

STEP 1: Choose your Gyoza (5 pieces).

There are 3 different sets for selection:
Tonkotsu King Gyoza (Pork): Fine minced pork mixed with rich & thick tonkotsu broth to give it the excellent taste.
Tori King Gyoza (Chicken): Minced chicken mixed with rich chicken broth to nice and juicy feel.
Keisuke King Gyoza (Prawn): Minced prawn and pork mixed with strong flavor of crab stock to provide the excellent springy palatability.

STEP 2: Choose 2 side dishes

1. Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce.
2. Stir-fried Egg with Chinese Chives.
3. Stir-fried Pork and Cabbage with Miso.
4. Deep-fried Tofu with Minced Pork Gravy.
5. Deep-fried Chicken with Spicy Sauce and Mixed Sesame.
6. Stir-fried Egg with Tomatoes.
7. Stir-fried Eggplant (Brinjal) with Miso.
8. Deep-fried Potato with Minced Pork Gravy.

STEP 3: Choose the size of Koshihikari Rice and soup (Miso / Vegetable)

. Rice. Small, regualr, large and extra large at the same price.
. Soup. Vegetable and Miso.
. Marinated bean sprouts and cabbage pickles are available on the table for free.

Gyoza set is priced at $13.90 and a-la-carte order is $8.00 per set.

While queuing up, i completed the order chits. We selected the Tonkotsu King Gyoza (Pork) and Keisuke King Gyoza (Prawn). We opted for Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce, Stir-fried Pork and Cabbage with Miso, Deep-fried Chicken with Spicy Sauce & Mixed Sesame and Deep-fried Potato with Minced Pork Gravy. The size of rice is Regular and Large respectively and Miso Soup for both set.

Glasses of plain water were served immediately upon seated down and followed by Rice and Miso Soup.

The Koshihikari Rice served is the Japanese short-grain rice. Its texture has got a slight stickiness coupled with a desired softness. It tasted particularly good when using the Japanese Dry Seasoning available on the table to sprinkle over it.

The main ingredients of the Miso Soup were tofu and wakame. The wakame has got a likable sweet flavor with a slippery texture that complemented the smoothness of tofu. It tasted slightly salty with a distinctive miso taste.

The Gyoza served next. Both sets came at the same time. The lightly flavored filling was wrapped in a thinly rolled piece of wrapper. It was nicely pan-fried on one side to give a slight crispiness leaving the upper part with a steamed texture.

Tonkotsu King Gyoza (Pork). The lightly seasoned minced pork and the richness of thick tonkotsu broth was a pleasant combination.

It tasted good though not outstanding.

Keisuke King Gyoza (Prawn). The sweetness of the prawn complemented the light flavor of the minced meat and the intense flavor of the crab broth was a delightful surprise. This is a much prefer choice to the Tonkotsu King Gyoza.

All the dishes were prepared upon order and right in front of us in the open kitchen.

Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce. The chicken came in 2 pieces. It was nicely deep fried to give it the delightful crispiness and still succulent in texture. The Sauce tasted more like the Japanese Mayonnaise and not quite like the Tartar Sauce stated.

Stir-fried Pork and Cabbage with Miso. Slices of thinly sliced pork belly were stir-fried with cabbage as well as red and green pepper. It was a tasty dish though not too special.

Deep-fried Chicken with Spicy Sauce & Mixed Sesame. This is the nicest amongst all the side dishes. The 2 pieces of deep-fried chicken were mixed with Spicy Sauce then garnished with sesame. The Spicy Sauce did not taste too spicy and the taste was further enhanced by the bits of sesame seeds.

Deep-fried Potato with Minced Pork Gravy. The deep-fried potato pieces were then served with the Minced Pork Gravy. The taste of minced pork gravy was rather appetizing.

The service was friendly and attentive. We were greeted upon enter and leaving. It was an enjoyable lunch.
