Fish Soup with rice

Rui Ji Fish Porridge ( Raffles Place )

There was a long queue when i came for lunch at this food centre. I decided to join in out of the curiousity. I waited for about 20 minutes to order. A basic bowl of fish soup consists of a good portion of thick sliced fish. The fish tasted really fresh with a distinct natural sweetness detected. It was served in clear tasting soup with only a slight peppery taste together with vegetable. This is one of the healthier alternative for lunch.

Duck Rice
Just OK 2012-07-25

Sin Choon ( Ang Mo Kio )

I always come here with my partner for lunch. Our usual order is 2 sets of their duck rice set. Each set consists of a good portion of boneless duck meat, halve of braised egg and tau kwa. We always requested for extra braised sauce to go with the rice. The texture of the braised duck is succulent. It has been one of the best with that amount of money. A bowl of hot herbal-ish soup is given with the set.

Hup Seng Huat Cooked Food ( Ang Mo Kio )

This stall is well adored by the regular customers. If you come for breakfast and you would most likely expected to wait. A basic bowl of kway teow is only $2.50. It served with minced meat, lean meat, fishball, fishcake and bean sprouts. And, not forgetting the nicely fried pork lards added to enhance the taste and to bring out the flavor. Such is a simple taste faithfully supported by their customers.

BAKERZIN ( Yishun )

I was excited but later let down by the taste. It seemed these macaron did not meet the most basic expectations of a macaron. Huge air pockets found in the shells. The filling was a tad too little and a bit too sweet to my liking too. All the different flavors did not manage to amaze me and left no impression. I expected it to fare a bit better and never did i expect such disappointment.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

Nam Kee Fried Prawn Noodle ( Clementi )

The queue can be anticipated at this stall if you come during dinner. This is the drier version of fried prawn noodle. The texture is moist but not wet. Their ingredients like prawns and sotong have got a noticeable freshness. The noodle is served with the sambal chilli together with the red cut chilli. The portion is quite little and is not too filling. The minimum order is $4 onward.

Fried Carrot Cake

Fried Carrot Cake ( Bugis )

This is my all time favourite carrot cake. I like it so much to willingly queued up for 30 minutes just to order it. Though i get to choose between the black and the white but my choice has always been the black one. I enjoy the taste of dark sweet sauce using to fry the carrot cake with the egg. It was fried so well to give it a slightly crispy texture and fragrance. I always requested to have extra preserved radish added to my fried carrot cake. It goes very well with a cup of Kopi O.

Fried Kway Teow
Just OK 2012-07-25

Guan Kee ( Ghim Moh )

This stall has the longest queue in this food centre. The waiting time is really really crazy. It can be upto 45 minutes. The frying process is done by the boss himself. He is so passionate and he is making effort in frying every plate well. At this stall, you can customized your order and such an order will be entertained as every plate of kway teow is fry individually right here. I could taste distinct wok taste but the taste is not particularly impressive. To be honest, i would not mind eating it if no queue but i am not willing to queue 15 minutes or more for this plate of fried kway teow. Whether worth queuing or not, this is a plate of above average fried kway teow.

Lucky Poh Hong Kong Noodle & Rice ( Ghim Moh )

This is also one of the oldest stall in this food centre. It has been around for more than a decade. It has been there already when i moved to holland area and it is still here after i moved away for many years now. They are famous for its wanton noodle and soya sauce chicken. I usually ordered a basic plate of wanton mee for $3. It came with quite a few slices of char siew and wantons in the soup. I like the wantons so much to order an extra bowl of wantons soup each time. They always cooked the noodle to perfection. It has a noticeable springiness and an enjoyable chewiness. Their filling of the wantons consist of minced meat, prawn and water chestnut. One of the better ones that i ever tasted.

Prawn Kway Teow
Just OK 2012-07-25

Happy Garden ( Ang Mo Kio )

This stall is manned by a friendly auntie and her assistant. They offer prawn noodle and lor mee. I have only tried the prawn noodle so far. This stall is famous for their pork ribs noodle but it usually sold out before 11 am. The stall usually closed at 1 pm. My usual order is kway teow dry with extra chilli. Even with extra chilli, the spiciness level is quite minimum. They added in tomato paste to give the noodle a hint of sweetness. The portion is quite good for $3. It served with ingredients like prawns and lean meat.

Lotus root with pork ribs soup
Just OK 2012-07-25

Earth Jar Treasure ( Sin Ming )

I went to take away the soup after buying the duck wings from other coffee shop. I ordered the lotus roots with pork ribs soup at $6.50 to be taken away. I was charged an extra 0.30 cents for taking away. A small packet filled with different types of herbals was found in the soup. The sweet has got a natural sweet taste. The lotus roots and pork ribs have cooked to the nice softness. Another must try is their old cucumber pork ribs at only $4.50.

Hanifa Briyani Specialist ( Little India )

There was no queue when i was there for lunch. Most of the customers were queuing up at that famous stall. I ordered a chicken briyani. The chicken leg was quite big. It was nicely cooked with an aromatic curry taste. The texture of the chicken was tender. The rice was rather grainy. The curry gravy goes well with the rice and the chicken. Their chicken briyani is a pleasant surprise.

Fish Ball Minced Meat Noodle ( Ang Mo Kio )

It is getting difficult to find noodle at $2.50. This is one of the remaining stalls still serving it at such a price. Though it is cheap but it did not taste as good. The alkaline taste detected in the noodle can be a turn off. The texture of the mee pok was a bit too soft to my liking too. It served with basic ingredients like fishballs, fishcake and minced meat. I did not enjoy this bowl of mee pok.

Zhen Seng Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle ( Ang Mo Kio )

I got to agree that they served using rather fresh ingredients though the taste is a bit disappointing. Though requested for an extra amount of chilli to be added but it did not have any impact on the level of spiciness. The texture of the pork ribs was pretty good. It was not overly soft but just nice. The mee pok was cooked a bit too soft to my liking. The sauce mix did not quite taste the other prawn mee but nice in its own way.

Fried Chicken Cutlet rice
Just OK 2012-07-25

Seng Bee Chicken Rice ( Ang Mo Kio )

It was one of those days when i do not mind joining a queue. I decided to get the thai chicken cutlet rice. The chicken cutlet tasted over fried. It was a bit dry and hard. It served with achar and cucumber. The rice did not have much fragrant nor flavor. It tasted like plain rice. The thai chilli complemented the chicken cutlet and it tasted better too. It came with a bowl of cabbage soup.

Richie's Crispy Puff ( Commonwealth )

The size is slightly bigger than other curry puffs. It came with quite a few interesting flavours like thai spicy crab and black peper chicken & beef. I got a curry chicken puff. It has got an aromatic curry taste with nice potato filling with chunks of chicken and a piece of boiled egg. The crust is light, flaky and not oily. I am interested to try their other flavors soon.
