...Phoget it? OK Oct 26, 2011

My friend and I had taken a shopping trip to Chinatown.
Being in Chinatown, we expected to have cheap and good eats. However, we just couldn't seem to find the Hawker Centre, and ended up spending A LOT on our lunch.

One of the few places that were open at the time we went was Yummy Viet. The sign board said they offered lunch sets for around $8. We were already a little reluctant to enter after seeing the price, but we went in anyway. After taking a look at the menu, we realized that MANY of the menu items were $8.90 ++++.

I believe the only thing that was at $8.90 was the Chicken Noodles. Despite it being the cheapest, I just couldn't stand being in a Vietnamese Restaurant and only eating Chicken Noodles. I had to try the Pho instead. The whole set lunch cost me around $11.00+.

With the Lunch Set, you get a choice of drink, appetizer and the main course.

I had a sore throat that day, so I was hoping that the Plum Juice would alleviate the pain. However, their plum juice was not concentrated enough. It was a little diluted, making the taste somewhat bland - neither sour nor sweet.

I ordered some Spring Rolls for my appetizer. These weren't too bad. The first few bites they were good, but subsequently they made me feel a little "heavy". It was extremely oily, first of all. My ideal spring roll is one that is lightly fried, that includes a good balance between the vegetables and meat to make it light and "spring(the season)"-like. However, the meat in these spring rolls were rather overwhelming. On the plus side, it meant that they are generous with the meat. Yet, too much can make you sick. Fortunately it came with a sweet and sour sauce that helped balance the heaviness of the spring roll.

Ah...Pho. The pride of Vietnamese Cuisine. The Menu even spared the dish a page to explain the brilliance of the bowl of noodles in beef stock. It mentioned that the stock is boiled for hours to make sure the flavor stays within the soup. It got me so excited, but the moment I got it and tried it, I was a little disappointed. I really wondered if the soup had been boiled for hours. I feel like any local Prawn Mee had more flavor in its stock that the one at Yummy Viet. The thin beef slices were also a little on the tough side.

The impression I got after the meal was that I didn't get my money's worth. Part of the reason might be because I had intended to eat yummy, cheap hawker food. Of course, this might have clouded my judgment. Nonetheless, next time I go to China town, i will probably phoget Yummy Viet, and go find some cheapo la mian.

Spending per head: Approximately $11(Lunch)

Could be better OK Oct 25, 2011

Before you think I'm going to dismiss this burger joint, allow me to let you in on one important detail. I only tried one thing - The Better Basket.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to try the burgers, which they should be known for (according to the name).

So this review will solely be on the better basket.
For a price of $15, you'll get TBB fries, buffalo wings, cheesy chicken bites and calamari.

I think paying $15 for a sampler is a little too much to me, but then again, I'm not a fan of samplers. I usually go for the main course.

Overall, the better basket wasn't bad, but it just wasn't that fantastic.

The TBB fries were one of the few things I liked. The texture is akin to Long John Silver Fries, but had some pretty tasty seasoning to it. It was sort of like having seaweed fries. They actually gave a lot of this, which was nice.

The buffalo wings were more like black pepper wings. They're a little spicy. As I don't eat spicy food, I gave those to my friend. She said they were pretty good. The texture was nice- it was well grilled.

The cheesy chicken bites were fine. They were a little dry. The cheese came separately, and tasted much like cheese to dip nachos in. It had a hint of spice, but wasn't that cheesy. I was a little disappointed in this one. I expected gooey cheesy chicken bites, but it just felt really dry.

The basket also came with a variety of sauces. This is one positive about it. There was a strange wasabi cream sauce?, a chilli, and somewhat of a barbecue mixed with ketchup kind of sauce. The barbecue one was a little strange when we first tried it, but we both couldn't stop dolloping everything into it. Hahaha. It was strangely addicting.

The calamari was all right as well. The texture was nice, not too chewy, which was great.

This is a nice one to share as the portion is rather large. My friend and I shared and couldn't finish it. However, it just left us feeling extremely parched. I just felt like I was eating a variety of dried food.

Still, don't let this review deter you from visiting the better burger yourself. I say go for the burgers! I know I will. I already have my eye on the avocado chicken burger tongue

My Pizza Reminiscence  Smile Oct 22, 2011

To people who want a quick read about my Pizza Memoirs experience, I have simply one thing to say:

Brilliant

Where shall I begin?
Alright then, service. The waitress was extremely friendly and very accommodating. She was one of the reasons why the dining experience was enjoyable.
The manager/boss? himself came to greet my friend and I, and asked if we were enjoying the food. He was extremely friendly as well, and I truly appreciated that. This is something that happens rarely in Singapore, but very often in the USA. It just makes your whole dining experience more personal and enjoyable. The restaurant becomes not just one to eat at, but a place to really delight in.

Food? My friend and I only ordered the Seafood Pizza, and we LOVED it. It was delivered to our table, straight from the oven, piping hot. At a price of $15, we got a 9" pizza with a variety of seafood toppings - prawns, scallops, squid and mussels.

The texture was chewy and soft. The mozzarella was wonderfully melted and gooey. The seafood in the pizza was abundant. I especially loved the scallops. They were succulent and came in nice chunks. It was great to bite into the pizza, and find nice juicy chunks of scallops hiding underneath the cheese.

I really like the ambiance of the place. Sitting outside and enjoy pizza in the evening was great. My friend and I agreed that we would come back again. Also eating there gives you an option of trying food from the other stalls. You can even have thai and indian food if you'd like.

I strongly recommend visiting here for your gourmet pizza fix. I'd like to try their specialties next time I'm there.

Old Chang Eeeeeeeeee Cry Apr 30, 2012

I had the Chicken wrap ( I suppose you can think of them as mini ngoh hiangs) for $1.40 per stick.

I had bought it as an accompaniment to my cup noodle.

All I can say - IT WAS BAD.

Like, really really bad. Very rarely, have I come across food so bad that I can't stomach it. However, this was the case with this chicken wrap. I think the name Flour Wrap would have been more appropriate. It tasted completely of flour. They didn't even try to make it taste like chicken.

The texture was horrid. It was slimy, yicky paste that should not exist. If they had made it crispier, it wouldn't have been so bad.

This was a complete disappointment, and a waste of my $1.40.

My last time buying a chicken wrap from old chang kee.

SoyaFunk OK Apr 30, 2012
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Desserts and Cakes

After months of curious desire, I finally got the guts to try Jollibean's Lavender Soya milk.

Yes. Lavender Soya milk. They have a flower series that includes rose and jasmine as well.

Where do I begin with this one? I can't remember the exact price. I believe it was roughly around $2.50 maybe.

It definitely had a flowery/perfumy taste to it, but not in a bad way. Trust me, I've actually tasted perfume. It was somewhat of a light taste with a hint of ginger? It had a bit of spice to it, which sounds weird, but was very much appreciated. If it had been a completely lavender taste, I fear the soya milk would have been very artificial. The hint of spice gave it a bit more of a natural taste.

The texture was somewhat powdery. I'm not sure if it was due to the lavender flavoring, or that jollibean's soya milk is usually that way.

Was it bad? No, not at all. It was a little funky. Would I drink it again? That is still a mystery to me. I doubt I would wake up one morning and have cravings for it, but then again, only time will tell.
