Crispy Chicken Cutlet Smile Aug 08, 2012

I was rather surprised when I turned up at this restaurant, because the items listed on the menu is rather expensive and I doubt there will be many at this place, but I was wrong! The whole place was packed full with about a hundred people seating inside, and I'm dying to know why.

Turns out that they offer a slightly different menu from their outlet at Queens Street, and is more affordable for patrons. So I got myself 2 items from the Local Lunch selection, which is their most value for dollar item in the menu.
Crispy Chicken Cutlet

Crispy Chicken Cutlet

The first one is Crispy Chicken Cutlet. The portion is quite decent for $8, which makes it even more worthwhile considering the location of the restaurant. As the name suggest, the chicken is quite crispy but is a little dry. It comes with this lemon chili sauce to go with the chicken and I really love it, so much that I could almost forget the chicken meat is dry.
Another plus point is that you can choose a side to complete the meal, such as fries, rice, or toast. I picked the fries and I wasn't disappointed. Fries was fresh and crispy and it compliments the lemon chili sauce well too.
Chicken Rendang

Chicken Rendang

My father had this Rendang Chicken instead, which is also $8. I tried the curry sauce only, so I shall only comment on that. The curry sauce is literally littered with coconut strips, and it's very flavourful, though sinful. However, it proves too spicy for me, and it sent me reaching for my drinks after a sip of the curry sauce. Not recommended for those who cannot take much spiciness.
Mini Bundung Cupcake

Mini Bundung Cupcake

Some random Taiwan news said today 8th August is father's day. I suppose the Chinese number 8 sounds like father (pa), hence the link. For the fun, I decided to get him a Mini Bundung Cupcake to celebrate this day! It looks really cute, really mini, but really expensive, at $1.50 each. It does taste special though, because nobody has came up with a bandung flavour cupcake before.

I will come back to this place again if I happen to be around botanic gardens!

Great Tasting Pumpkin Dishes! Smile Jun 25, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café

Three wombats cafe cooks a variety of Australian food, which is a little different from mainstream western food in terms of the ingredients used, and it's my first time in a cafe like this.

The place isn't very big, with seating no more than 20, but definitely very cosy with cushions and stuff. Although there is only one staff serving all the customers, she was had no problem coping, with ordering, serving, drink refill and bill payment, fast and efficient.

I went for the set meal with includes a soup of the day, a main course, and a drink.

Mushroom soup is the soup of the day. The soup had a lot of mushroom of different variety and it adds texture to the soup. However, I feel that the soup would be better if it's creamier.

For my main course, I had the Pumpkin ChopChop. It's basically Chicken Chop in brown sauce served with pasta in pumpkin sauce. Chicken chop is quite soft and juicy inside, together with the brown sauce which had a little tinge of herb taste, is delicious. However, what caught my attention is the pasta in pumpkin sauce. I've never tasted any pumpkins (or pumpkin dishes) before, so I have no idea what to expect. Turns out that, the pumpkin sauce is rather bland, slightly salty and sweet, and the consistency is quite thick and makes a good sauce for pasta.

Drink selection is pretty wide for set meal, which includes coffee and Italian soda, which cost $4+ on the menu. I took the peach Italian soda which is a little peach syrup in soda and it gives a little kick in otherwise plain soda.

The set cost a total of $18 with service charge, and which isn't expensive for the quality of food served

I would recommend this cafe for anyone who likes to try something different from usual western food.

Ice cream buffet Cry May 26, 2012

Ok

Ok

Being a huge fan of ice cream, I had to try out this ice cream buffet near my place. I had a groupon that gave me a discount, so I only paid $8.90 for the 1 hour ice cream buffet that cost $14.95.

The environment wasn't as good and relaxing as before when it first open, as many of their "relaxing" seatings were removed.

There was about 13 flavours available, and I tried them all. For most of the flavours, I wasn't pleased with the taste. Almost all of the ice cream flavours lacked the creamy texture and felt kind of "icy", like you would eat ice shavings. The yoghurt flavours are lacking the sour flavour of yoghurt.

The good thing was the waffle was unlimited, and it can be ordered multiple times, but however, the waffle wasn't freshly prepared.

Overall, for the buffet or even ala carte orders, I wouldn't recommend this shop for the price paid. For a high price like this, I was expecting more. For $18.90++, there is a much better tasting and wider selection of ice cream in the ice cream buffet waiting at Swensen's, and not to mention the deserts available there.

Worth A Try OK May 21, 2012

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Porridge/Congee | Dim Sum | Noodles

Whenever I'm at Ion Orchard and I needed a meal, I will always make my way to Watami, but not this time. Someone recommended that we try out this Chinese Restuarant, and it's probably good cause I have my 92 year old grandma with me, who prefers everything Chinese.

Service was fairly good. I was served only after enquiry, and allocated a seat next to the service counter. I suppose that is why service is always fast and efficient. Even when the service counter is that close, refilling of tea was still slow, with most of the time, an empty pot sits on the table. However, ordering wasn't a problem. Service crew did recommend some of their special dishes and desert, but I won't consider that hard selling yet.
Crab Meat Fried Rice

Crab Meat Fried Rice

Ordered quite a handful of dishes. The first one being the Crab meat fried rice & salted fish fried rice. The crab meat fried rice had a rather common seafood taste. Nothing special, but also not awful tasting. You should also know that crab meat is scarce in this dish. As for the salted fish fried rice, it felt rather oily, and it lacked salted fish in the rice, but at least it tasted quite good. Price was rather high ranging between $12 to $14.80. They only serve small portions, and the portion is lesser than what you will see at a typical zi char stall.
Dumpling Noodles (Dry)

Dumpling Noodles (Dry)

The next dish is dumpling noodles. The noodles and the sauce was very well done. Definately one of the best dumpling noodles I've tasted. The noodles are very Q, but so much that it's hard to break the noodles by biting, and I ended up slurping up a whole chunk of noodle. At $7.30 for a plate, I consider that a good price for something this good.
Grouper Head

Grouper Head

The next dish is a grouper head chopped into many pieces, cooked in dark sauce and tofu. Like most fish head, there are lots of bones in this one. The meat, which is quite soft and smooth, had soaked up the sauce pretty well, and the taste was just right.
Deep Fried Nan Ru Pork Ribs

Deep Fried Nan Ru Pork Ribs

The next dish is deep fried nan ru pork ribs. It's a popular cantonese dish, but unfortunately, it wasn't prepared as well. I could hardly taste the "nan ru" taste in the pork. But good job on the deep frying. It wasn't very oily, and they managed to lock in the juices in the pork. However, I consider this very expensive because $14 only gets 4 pieces, with a heck load of bone.

There was other dishes that we ordered such as deserts and the roasted duck, which was well done, and worth trying. Overall, 8 of us spent $188, which was slightly high for an average restaurant. If I were to come again, I'll take the dumpling noodles for sure. =)

Visted Rang Mahal Pavilion for a mother's day dinner. Had their dinner set meal and it was fairly priced for a fine dining restaurant.

The ambience was great, cozy and not very bright.
The first course of the set meal was a piece of fish, prawn and chicken. I was wow-ed by the taste instantly. Everything was just right.
Then came a vegetable soup, which was alright, since vegetable wasn't really my cup of tea.
The main course comprises of 3 different curry, served with rice, and some bread. The portion was generous and the taste is unlike the usual curry that we had before, but it was a taste that we enjoyed.
Lastly, there was an ice cream to finish the meal, and it was perfect all the way to the last bit.

Service was fantastic with the service crew explaining in detail of the food, and they were very attentive.

If you have some extra cash for some fine dining, this is one place you might want to consider.
