sambal fried rice

Pin Wei Seafood ( Choa Chu Kang )

I decided to try the sambal fried rice after seeing countless people ordered this dish. i must say it was pretty unique, normally we have sambal sotong, sambang kang kong but hardly sambal fried rice. this place's sambal fried rice is pretty good. it was very fragrant. the sambal had this prawn taste, i like the flavour of the prawn. it was not too spicy that leaves your stomach burning after every mouth. one word to describe it, "SHIOK!".

Chatime ( Novena )

I decided to try the hazelnut chocolate milk tea from chatime. it was a combination of two of my favourite flavour. i like hazelnut as it gives this really nutty taste yet the nut taste is not too strong. the chocolate was not too sweet, it tasted like a combination of milk and dark chocolate. the drink itself is very smooth and thirst quenching. somehow the hazelnut and chocolate flavour complements each other.

Different side dishes everytime

Manna Story ( Jurong East )

I like to visit Manna Story cos it serves one of the nicest korean food i have eaten. They also have a wide variety of FREE FLOW side dishes. their side dishes do rotate from time to time and we hardly get the same side dishes everytime we visit. I have tried their squid and chicken bibimbap so this time round i ordered the pork bibimbap. i like their pork, it was not too tough and was marinated to perfection. i think their menu only focus on the more commonly eaten korean food so the variety was not a lot. but the delicious side dishes outweigh everything. very worth it.

gyoza set
Smile 2013-04-24
Ajisen Ramen ( Woodlands )
I think this outlet can work to improve their service when there is a lot of people in the restaurant. i went there at dinner time and ordered their gyoza set. their gyoza set include ten pieces of gyoza, two pieces of chicken karage, one bowl of rice and one bowl of soup. after waiting for some time, my ten pieces of gyoza arrived. i waited for about 10 minutes and i asked a waiter for the rest of the food, another 5 minutes passed and the two piece chicken karage came. the rice and soup was no show for the subsequent 10 minutes. i asked the same waiter and he was kind of lost what the set meal included. i was kind of annoyed so i directly flagged down the manager and told her that the rice and soup had not come. the manager disappeared into the kitchen for a good 10 minutes before coming out with the rice and soup. by then the gyoza and chicken was cold and the skin of the gyoza was a little hard. they need to improve product knowledge i guess.

Pizza Hut ( Choa Chu Kang )

I think the super supreme is one of the most wholesome pizza from pizza hut. the pizza had practically all the ingredients on top of it. there was ground beef, beef pepperoni, pineapples, capsicum, olives, mushroom and ham. i think there was a fusion of flavours which makes it really good. the tomato base also brought out the flavour of the pizza. i choose the thin crust which made the pizza taste lighter and not too heavy.

Lunch Set
Smile 2013-04-24
Hong Kong Kim Gary Restaurant ( Orchard )

I like this restaurant, they are pretty flexible. their lunch promotion starts at 12 noon but when we wanted to order at about 11.50am they were more than willing to take our order. unlike some places, they make you wait until the exact time then take your orders. i ordered the black pepper beef steak spaghetti. The black pepper sauce was quite a lot but it was not too spicy and peppery. the beef steak was very tender and juicy. i felt the black pepper sauce goes well with the spaghetti. besides the main, the set lunch comes with a drink and a soup, for the soup, i ordered the borsh soup. it was really good, a little sour, a little sweet. the drink i opted for yuan yang. it was really refreshing. the sweetness of the milk tea was balance out by the bitterness of the coffee. it was a hearty meal.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf ( Woodlands )
The caramel macchiato from Coffee Beans is indeed to die for. The drink was not overly sweet, the caramel fragrant was present at every sip, it was just a pleasure to drink it. i ordered the large size, but it was simply not enough. it was one of the nicer drinks i had at coffee bean. the drink was very smooth and did not have any bitter after taste. the caramel flavour does lingers in your mouth after awhile. it was just simply refreshing.

Hot Fudge Hotcakes

McDonald's / McCafe ( Choa Chu Kang )

Have you tried the new Mcdonald's Hotcake Breakfast? I was glad i pulled myself out of bed and walked over to Mcdonald's to try their Hot Fudge Hotcakes. I know the name sounds a little sinful but i guarantee it is worth all the calories there is! The hot fudge is the same as the Sundae so if you are a fan of the Hot Fudge Sundae, this is the ideal breakfast for you. The hot fudge is kind of thick and sticky so you need effort to spread on the hot cakes. but the hot cakes come pretty warm so i guess it does help in the spreading of the hot fudge. the sweetness of the hot fudge kind of balance out with the hot cakes so it is not too sweet. great way to kick start your day.

Asian Dolce Latte
Smile 2013-04-24
Starbucks ( Jurong East )

The staff at the counter taking my order was kind of actively promoting their new beverage called Asian Dolce Latte. I decided to order this drink instead of my usual frappes. I chose the hot version as i did not want the ice to change the taste of the drink and indeed it paid off. the drink tasted really smooth. it was not too bitter, i dislike latte that are too bitter. i like the whipped cream they top the drink, it made the drink taste much smoother. the black shavings on top of the latte was not chocolate, it was in fact coffee beans shavings, like of bitter but very strong in flavour.

Nacho Hotdog Bun
Smile 2013-04-24
Mr Bean - Canteen B ( Jalan Bahar )

This Mr Bean outlets really sells a lot of different thing from the Mr Beans you find in heartland areas. I was kind of thrilled to see that they sold hotdogs with nacho sauce on top. I knew they sold the normal hotdogs but to invent one with nacho sauce was just indeed fantastic. Although it was so sinful but it was a must try. the nacho sauce and sour cream enhance the flavour of the plain hotdog bun. the bun was light and fluffy and the hotdog was very tasty. I recommend this from this outlet.

Poor Service and Inflexible Staff

Chicken HotPot ( Novena )
After the pleasant experience I had from my last visit, i chose this place out of all the restaurants in Novena to celebrate my friend's birthday only to leave with extreme regret. We went there at the time they just open for dinner. We were the ONLY ONES in the entire restaurants. As we both had pretty large bags, we asked the waitress if we could sit at a larger table. She said "No!" cos it will be very crowded later. She already said LATER, NOW there was no one around. ONLY US. It was not as if this was a buffet and we will be sitting for a couples of hours. I wanted to walk out due to the waitress's INFLEXIBILITY but my friend felt embarrassed to walk out so i gave in and sat down at the TINY TABLE FOR TWO with my bag placed behind me on the chair.

Since it was my friend's birthday, we decided to order more food. We ordered a Large Chicken Hotpot (they have three sizes) and a small Beef Hotpot. On top of that we ordered a glass of cold green tea each. When they placed the hotpot holder on the table, it was already very cramp. I again asked the same waitress if it would be too CRAMP since we ordered the food enough for at least 3 to 4 people but she STUBBORNLY insisted that it was fine and continued to want us to remain at this tiny table.

When both the Large Pot and Small Pots came, true enough it was SO CRAMP. We barely had place to put our drinks in fear we might knock it over. the movement to take the food from the pots was also limited as it was just too cramp. We were three quarter finishing our food and there was nobody coming. the restaurant was empty with all the larger tables EMPTY and here we were like cramp in the tiny space. only when we were finishing up our last bit of food, an elderly couple came in and they too were cramp into the same tiny table as us. the lady asked the same INFLEXIBLE waitress if they could get a larger table and she continued her stubborn ways of rejecting them. CANT THIS WAITRESS SEE IT, US CUSTOMERS JUST WANT TO EAT MORE COMFORTABLY. not to mention this restaurant serves hot pot which means the pot in front of you is lighted and hot and if it is too cramp, it would be dangerous and we could burn ourselves accidentally.

The food is undeniably good, the gravy was thick for both the chicken and the beef and the broth they add to the hotpot when the gravy dries up is also nice. the beef was tender and you hardly need to chew. the beef ball was very springy too. I appreciate such good food, but for such uncomfortable environment and poor service from the stubborn waitress, it is kind of turn off. Price wise, it was not very cheap either, our bill came up to around $50 to $60 plus. this price can get you a much more comfortable environment.

char siew noodles and salt and pepper fried toufu
Smile 2013-04-24
Canton Paradise ( Dover )

My best friend and I headed to Canton Paradise for dinner. We both ordered a main course each and a side dish to share. for my main course, i ordered the char siew noodles. for the side dish, we share a salt and pepper fried toufu. the char siew noodles was one of the best i have every taste. starting from the noodles, it was cooked perfectly, very crunchy and does not stick to your teeth. the vegetables taste pretty plain on its own, but when you mix it with the sauce. it tasted very fresh and crunchy. the char siew is very tender and tasty. it was flavourful on it own. i like the gravy too.

the salt and pepper fried toufu was really good. it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. i like the seasoning, it was not too salty. as a whole the toufu tasted really light. there was quite a significant number of pieces on the plate. very worth it.

I decided to give the korean noodles another shot. The last time i ordered just the spicy chicken noodles where the chicken was not marinated at all. this time round i was much smarter, i opted for the chicken to be deep fried. indeed it was much better. the chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. the noodles and soup tasted nicer without the taste of the unmarinated chicken cooked inside. i think this meal saved my impression of this shop,

Hot Tomato Cafe & Grill ( Woodlands )

I was not in the mood for eating any spaghetti so i got myself the fried calamari and fries. i like their fries, very thick and crispy. one thing about their fries is that it is not too salty, apparently it seems like they did not season it with salt, so i guess it is much healthier. the calamari is really good too. it was not overcooked, when calamari gets over cooked, it tends to be very tough, but at Hot Tomato, their calamari is very chewy and tender. it was very juicy. The portion is good for one person's meal, but it can be ordered as a side dish to be shared among friends as well.

I decided to give the fried chicken set a try. It was so cheaply priced, only $3.20. you get half a fried chicken breast. a portion of korean rice, shredded vegetable salad and kimchi. the chicken breast was deep fried till very crispy on the outside but the meat inside was very tender and juicy. the korean rice was very soft and chewy. i love korean rice, they are very sticky yet does not have the vinegar taste that japanese sushi rice have. their kimchi had the perfect taste, sour and spicy. it was also very crunchy and juicy. i recommend this Fried Chicken Set.
