Had CNY dinner here after a movie at Causeway Point. Surprisingly, this Chinese restaurant is open during this festive period.

The 5 of us were ushered to our seats immediately, even though the restaurant looked full. Once seated, the waitresses promptly approached us at least twice to take our orders, but we weren't quite ready then. The signature dish was a 8-pc multi-coloured Xiao Long Baos (4 different tastes; 2 of each colour) and was first on the menu. Without hesitation, we agreed to order that (the colours were very attractive!). We then decided on a communal dinner and ordered the following:

8-pc Multi-Coloured Xiao Long Baos (there is a name for it, which I didn't take notice of)
8 Xiao Long Baos, 5 of us. I only managed to taste the Crab Roe-flavoured one (orange-coloured). First off, the Xiao Long Baos looked a little bigger than that of Din Tai Fung. The skin was thin, yet it does not tear when I scoop up the Xiao Long Bao. Good! The broth within was flavourful! The only thing which left me bizarre was where the Crab Roe was (echoed by another of us too!), cos' I couldn't taste it at all!

There was a small note given to us when the Xiao Long Baos were served, where it recommends a numerical sequence in how the 4 different flavours should be tasted. However, we didn't order enough to follow through (not even being able to taste all 4 flavours!). There is also a separate set of instructions on how to eat Xiao Long Baos. Briefly, it requires one to scoop the Xiao Long Bao with a spoon. Chew off a bit of it, and suck the broth within, then eat all of it!

My way - Scoop, dip the Xiao Long Bao in vinegar (preferably drench it completely!), chew off a bit, slurp up the broth in the spoon (the broth is hot, mind you!), then eat the Xiao Long Bao as a whole!

Another challenging way - Scoop, dip in vinegar, dunk the whole Xiao Long Bao in your mouth and let the hot broth burn your mouth! Scalding Thrill! Haha!

Stir-Fried Spinach with Garlic
Good! Spinach was soft. No rave about it, though it was a welcoming side dish to all the festive foods we have been indulging in.

Scrambled Egg with Fish and Scallops
We ordered this cos' we have never seen a scrambled egg, with its egg yolk not scrambled in! Haha! Turned out it looked like Mapo Tofu with fish meat and scallops! The egg yolk was raw in the middle. Not as special as we thought it to be!

Drunken Chicken
This was the best side dish we ordered (it was meant to be an appetiser). I never really liked this dish as the ones I have tried before were served cold and the chicken was a little raw. This one brought back my confidence! The chicken was cooked just right, with the wine all soaked in. The wine was rather strong! My nostrils flared the moment I tasted the chicken! Absolutely good!!!

Shanghai Fried Rice
No shout about this dish. It doesn't seem to have enough "wok-hei". Not the best fried rice I've eaten thus far.

Yangzhou Fried Rice
Same comments above, though the fried rice above tasted better (probably due to the soy sauce)

The service here is good, as the waitresses were really efficient. They were all busy serving customers, and we didn't need to request for a tea re-fill as they would do it promptly. What also captured my attention was that some of the waitresses were senior folks - very polite ones! Their good service warmed my heart and made the food tasted better!

As for the signature dish - Xiao Long Baos, I'd choose to go to Din Tai Fung. But since the prices fall in the range of $10-$20 here, coupled with good service, I would want to dine at this place again, and probably give a go at their special menus.

Total Cost: $83 for 5 pax

Delicious Cream Puffs!!! Smile Jun 11, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Bakery | Café

And I tot Beard Papa's Cream Puff has the best cream puffs! Well, Mooshi Bakery makes a fine competitor! smile

A small little bakery along East Coast Rd, it's not exactly easy to spot, unless you've the intention to look out for it. It's easier to spot Awfully Chocolate! Once you spot that, Mooshi Bakery is just beside it! lol

The name alone sounds cute, but it's even cuter when the staff greets you "Mooshi Mooshi" when you enter. Decor and ambience is cosy. Don't expect to see the usual pastries and cakes you find in your neighbourhood bakery here. Instead, there are other interesting food like Pandan Tart, Cheese and Nutella Cake (looked like an art piece itself!) etc. I went straight for the Mooshi Cream Puffs, which I learnt later was the signature dish of this bakery!

The Mooshi Cream Puffs are nothing like the usual. Firstly, when you've made your order, a staff will prepare your order on the spot for you - squeezing the cream into the puffs. Man, it's a lot of cream! Diet Watchers, hold back, or else - INDULGE! tongue Oh, there's a current promotion going on - $12.90 for 4 cream puffs (Usual: $3.90/pc)

The cream puffs are then packed 2 in a box. Neat and adorable, you could give it away as a gift! lol Ok, back to this review. The moment I sank my teeth into the puffs, I was instantly speechless. The cream was SO SO SO delicious!!! It's almost like the best cake you can find being squeezed into the cream puffs! The texture of the puffs was also soft, almost like eating a croissant! How many calories I've packed in? WHO CARES! tongue

Note - If you are a small eater, you may wish to share 1 Mooshi Cream Puff with someone else. Yes, I'm not kidding! You won't be able to down all those cream by yourself, unless you have a stomach capacity equivalent to a whale (I'm exaggerating! Haha!)!

Total Cost:
4 Mooshi Cream Puffs - $12.90 (Best part is my dear bro/friend treated me to it! Yay!mad)

Spread the love for food around! Cheers!

Wanton Noodles Smile Jan 17, 2012

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Roasted Meat

The roasted meat from this stall is no joke man! Really good! lol Especially the Char Siew, totally succulent!! I had an unforgettable Char Siew Roast Pork Rice previously, hence returning this time round to try the Wanton Noodles.

Fatty certainly did not disappoint! lol The noodles were so good, is comparable to that in HK!!! Look at the translucent colour of noodles!! lol The chilli was too spicy for me though, hence I left it at the side of my plate.

The wanton was just average to me, and only 2 pieces were given. If they could throw in another 2 fried ones, it'll be awesome! lol (On this note, my friend returned after me with a BIG bowl of wanton! Hahaha!)

Total Cost: Wanton Noodles - $3

Braised Pork Udon Soup Smile Oct 19, 2011
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong

This is a popular outlet, and a queue is expected. They ought to step up on their manpower, especially during peak hours such as weekend mealtimes. Was standing in line, waiting for my turn to be served for quite a while, despite noticing at least 3 empty tables in the outlet. The staff were too busy serving the diners within. (On this note, there was 1 other staff whose main duty was to sign customers up for their privilege card membership, and nothing else. My take - Serve your customers first!)

In spite of the initial hiccup described above, the staff were rather efficient within. It didn't take long to get hold of a staff's attention to take and serve my order. My food arrived quickly. I ate the following:

Braised Pork Udon Soup
The serving was substantial, in terms of the amount of braised pork. The pork was tender and this was 1 of the rare noodle dish, where the amount of meat was more than the noodles! The soup was also light and does not have an artificial taste in it (like those in instant noodles). Great for those who want to have a simple meal!

Mango Snow Ice
This was heavenly. It was not overly sweet and most parts of it were MANGO (flavoured or not)! There were tiny cubes of mango and mango jelly, which gave a nice overall texture and taste to this dessert. I kinda suspect the ice-cream was sweetcorn. But even so, it sure blended well with the flavoured ice!

Tip: This dessert is recommended for 4 pax and above (assuming you all just had your meals before). Do not underestimate its serving!

No qualms about the food in this outlet. I will re-visit this place.

Fish Soup Smile Oct 13, 2011

This stall is located in the middle row of ABC Food Centre. There is usually a short queue at the stall but nonetheless, your orders will be taken quickly.

I ordered the fish soup which comes with rice. On first look, the dull milky-coloured soup did not look appetising. However, when I tasted the soup, it was so delicious and naturally sweet from its ingredients, that I was thankful for the substantial amount of soup given. I slurped it all to its last drop!

The ingredients in the soup include ikan bilis, tomatoes, vegetables and fish slices. All in all, this is a healthy delicious dish. Now who says healthy food can't taste good? lol
