herbal jelly with sea coconut
Smile 2 days ago

Dessert - Li Soon Coffeeshop ( Bukit Batok District )

After our dinner, my parents suggested having desserts, so we went to the desserts stall. I ordered a bowl of herbal jelly with sea coconut dessert which costs $2.50. The herbal jelly was really authentic tasting, it is the bitter kind. Fret not as the sea coconut is very sweet, so it helps to negate the bitter taste of the herbal jelly if you are afraid of the bitterness. For me, the herbal jelly is just right by itself, though I will pair it with sea coconut together since the sea coconut is too sweet to be eaten on its own.

pork ribs rice
Just OK 2 days ago

Spring Garden Fried Dishes ( Tanjong Pagar )

I ordered a takeaway of pork ribs rice back to the work place as it is too hot to eat in the food centre. The waiting time is around 10 minutes. The rice is just as it is, without too much of gravy from the pork ribs, so if you like having rice with gravy, it will be good to inform the kitchen about it. There are around 4-5 pieces of meat and the meat is very nicely flavoured with the sauce which is slightly sweet and salty. There are no bones, so it is easy to eat it as well. The portion of rice is quite a lot relative to the meat. I think it would be better if they add some cucumbers for some greens in the dish.

waffles
Smile 2 days ago

Moon River Cake Shop ( Choa Chu Kang )
I love the smell of freshly baked waffles. It is always very aromatic. The waffles sold here are the very green waffles and the waffle is quite thick as well. It is my first time trying and I loved the taste. It is tasty enough on its own without any spreads as the waffle has a nice coconutty/pandan aroma and the sweetness is also just right. What I particually like is that they also make the waffles on the spot, which further ensures that the waffle is soft and not tough. Those waffles which have been left lying out there for long usually end up being very hard, and it is definitely not the case here.

Floss bun
Smile 2 days ago

BreadTalk ( City Hall )

I always enjoyed the Floss buns from Breadtalk most, and it is these buns which make me visit Breadtalk at least once a month for my fix of floss bread. My favourite has to be the spicy floss bread as the spicy floss is much more tasty with the hint of spicyness, adding on to the dimensions of taste. In addition, the bread for the floss is always very soft and fluffy which means customers like me get to taste more floss than bread. Each of these floss buns now cost $1.70, much more expensive than neighbourhood bakeries, but much more tasty as well.

beancurd
Smile 2 days ago

Mr Bean ( Orchard )

I had a sudden craving for beancurd and the nearest and most convenient place to get it was Mr Bean. Even though I know it is expensive as compared to buying from hawker centres, I bought it anyway as I remembered it was quite nice. The beancurd serving is quite a lot and the container also helps to keep it warm for quite some time. The beancurd is smooth and the taste and texture is also not too powdery. There are some beancurd which are powdery if not mixed and processed properly, but it is not the case for Mr Bean's beancurd. You can also request for less sugar syrup if you like it to be healthier like I did.

cream cheese breads with raisin
Smile 5 days ago

Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude ( Tampines )

I saw quite a lot of people going in to this bakery and buying the breads hence I decided to enter the bakery shop as well. I haven’t had the chance to try out their breads so I was looking for something which I can have for breakfast the next day. My eyes caught this box of breads which are cream cheese breads with raisin. There are two types, one is darker and one is lighter which I think it could be due to the use of different types of bread flours. I got the darker bread which looks like it is wheat bread. Each box costs $2.50. The bread is really good. It is slightly chewy and the cheese filling is just right, not too overpowering nor too little. The raisins within the bread is also enough to give a burst of flavour when you bite into them. I would think this is a very good choice of bread to buy if you like cream cheese.

Chang Cheng Chinese Vegetables Rice - Sin Keow Restaurant ( Bukit Batok District )

It is very rare for me to order fish dishes outside because it can cost quite a bit, but I haven't had stingray for a long time, so when I saw it, I just had to order it. Moreover, the stingray is cooked with assam sauce which is my favourite. The stingray is quite fresh tasting and the meat is not too tough to bite. It is really very appetising with the sauce, though I felt it could be more sour for a more tangy taste. The steamed egg with meat is also delicious as the egg custard is very smooth and it has enough taste. Last is the sweet sour pork which is alright though some pieces can be quite tough to bite. This plate costs me $4.50.

Soup Master - Kopitiam ( Choa Chu Kang )

I was at Yew Tee and decided to just have my lunch there instead of going back to Jurong Point. I ordered the lotus root soup with rice. The set costs me $4.50 if I remember correctly. The soup is very tasty though I guess it is due to use of salt instead of much of the taste being from the lotus root and pork ribs. The ingredients are quite little too, there is only around two pieces of pork ribs and the pork meat is a little tough to chew as well. The lotus root is quite alright in that it is sliced quite nicely, not too thick or too thin. Overall, I would rate it is just average.

Mother's day cake
Just OK 5 days ago

PrimaDeli ( Woodlands )
Last weekend being Mother's Day, my family got a mother's day cake from Prima Deli. This is one of the three special Mother's Day cakes that they have introduced. We got the Mixed Fruit cake. It is a very large cake at 1kg and it costs $39.80. The intersection of the cake is layers of cream mixed with fruit cocktails and vanilla sponge cake. While the taste is alright, I found the taste slightly monotonous after a while because there are too many layers and there is no difference in taste between each layer. I would think a small sized cake (i.e. less layers) will be better.
Overall, I was quite disappointed with the quality as I had expected more from Prima Deli.

Chinese Vegetables Rice
Smile 5 days ago

Chang Cheng Chinese Vegetables Rice - Yung Sheng Food Court ( Taman Jurong )

I went out with my parents for dinner at the hawker centre nearby. We came slightly before 7pm, hence, we did not have difficulty finding seats. I ordered my dinner from the mixed vegetables rice stall as I saw quite a few dishes that I like. I chose bitter gourd, dark soya sauce chicken and braised beancurd skin. The bitter gourd is slightly bitter, but that is how I like it to be. The chicken is also nice, especially the gravy. I had requested for gravy on the side which I drizzled bit by bit into my rice, making it really tasty. The beancurd skin can be slightly bland for normal people, but as I don't take too salty food, I find the taste to be just right for me. Overall, it is an enjoyable $2.70 dinner.

Handmade Noodle - Gek Poh Food Court ( Boon Lay )
I went to Gek Poh food court for my lunch after buying some things from Prime. The food court is quite crowded at lunch time. I ordered the handmade noodles from this stall, there is tom yum soup handmade noodle as well for those who like it. I ordered the normal ban mian at $3. The portion is quite alright, there are also slices of lean meat in addition to minced meat which is quite unique as most stalls only have minced meat. However, I thought the portion could certainly be more. Otherwise, there is nothing not to like about this bowl of noodles.

Lemper Udang
Cries 2013-05-05

Bengawan Solo ( Upper Thomson )

I was craving for something savoury and the counter girl recommended the Lemper Udang to me. It is essentially glutinous rice roll with spicy shrimp filling, wrapped in a banana/pandan leaf as shown. As I have not tried it before, I decided to get it. Each piece costs $1.20. The shrimp filling is very savoury though I wished it could be spicier. I didn't manage to take a photo of the cross section of the lemper udang, but the ratio of filling to rice is quite little as well, so I ended up eating a lot of rice and not tasting much of the shrimp. Overall, I think I will probably not buy this again since it is too expensive.

Ban Mian
Just OK 2013-05-05

Ban Mian - Food Junction ( Choa Chu Kang )
There is a lot of different stalls selling different cuisines, making me quite spoilt for choice. I eventually got the ban mian from this ban mian stall since it is near where I was sitted at. The ban mian that I chose is the u mian, there is other choices of noodles if you prefer others. The noodles is not soggy nor overly soft. The soup base is quite tasty as well. I always liked to mix a little of the sourish chilli sauce into the soup to enhance the flavour. However, I felt that the ingredients given are on the small side given its price. There is only a few clumps of minced meat and the meat are mostly fatty.

prime sirloin
Smile 2013-05-05

Astons Express ( Rochor )
The group of us wanted to have western meals, and what better choice than to have it at Astons Express? It serves western style food like grilled chicken, dory and steaks without GST and service charge. I ordered the Prime Sirloin steak and went for the corn and potato wedges for my sides. The Prime Sirloin costs $13.50. The sirloin is cooked quite throughly but still maintaining its tenderness in that the steak is not too tough to bite. I love it with the sauce as the sauce is not too salty and helps to bring out the flavour even more. The corn is rather hard to eat but otherwise, it is quite sweet. The wedges are a delight as well as it is still warm and crispy.

Pepperoni Personal Pan Pizza
Just OK 2013-05-05

Pizza Hut ( Dhoby Ghaut )

As my dining companion liked the personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut, I also went along with her and got myself the Pepperoni Pan Pizza. The Pepperoni Pan Pizza is visually very appetitsing with the contrast of colours from the pepperoni and cheese. This is an example of a simple pizza that is tasty just with two toppings, cheese and pepperoni. The melted cheese and the pepperoni goes very well together with the pizza base bread. Do note that it is also saltier than the normal pan pizzas as pepperoni itself is very salty, but since the pan pizza has a thick pizza base, the saltiness balances out. Each costs $8.90.
