Crazy Huge Portions at Spathe Public House
2013-03-13
With graffiti art on the red brick walls, Spathe radiates this sort of “New York neighbourhood” vibe
Aren’t you sick of small food portions here in Singapore? Apparently many eateries have not spared a thought for the folks with big appetites! In view of this first world problem many of us are facing, Spathe Public House truly is a godsend. The newest addition to the Mohamed Sultan dining enclave (filled with a number of noteworthy F&B outlets such as The Patissier and Chikuwa Tei), Spathe (pronounced ‘s • pey • th’) is all about communal dining and mammoth portions to feed large groups of friends and families. With brick walls, plush red booth seats, and heaps of warm colours all around from the use of wood, Spathe radiates this sort of “New York neighbourhood” vibe, which is further enhanced by the display of graffiti art on the walls – the perfect setting for get-togethers!
Confit Duck Puff with Foie Gras Supplement
Spathe’s menu consists of several sections, including ‘Mammoth Signatures’, ‘Spathe Classics’, ‘Fresh Greens’, ‘Pocket Plates’, ‘Desserts’ and of course, ‘Thirst Quenchers’, which showcase a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. There are even brunch and set lunch menus! Stealing the menu limelight are five ‘Mammoth Signatures’ created by Swiss-born Chef Claudio Sandri. These gigantic creations can easily satisfy four to six people, depending on the amount of dishes the group is ordering to share (or if you’re a self-proclaimed food demigod). However, individual servings are also available for those who prefer not to share the love. One must-try ‘Mammoth Signature’ is the Confit Duck Puff ($38 for sharing / $18 for individual). Seated on a bed of roasted onion confit, this rich, buttery treat is best enjoyed with a large slab of Foie Gras Supplement ($18 / $9 for individual) – we insist you add the foie gras on to get a real taste of heaven!
Sous Vide Spanish Octopus Salad
Another ‘Mammoth Signature’ to consider is the Sous Vide Spanish Octopus Salad ($38 for sharing / $18 for individual). This refreshing contender consists of baby spinach, garlic soil, cherry tomatoes, honey, wholegrain mustard vinaigrette and garlic and mustard soaked croutons. ‘Sous Vide’ is a cooking method to make food ultra-juicy, extra moist and super tender – explains why the octopus is so darn good! For fuss-free indulgence the salad is tossed in the kitchen so there’s no need for that extra effort; simply dig in to enjoy. Oh, note that the salad bowl for the mammoth version of this salad is way bigger than a human head… you’ve been warned. Other hot-mungous favourites include Provencal Baked NZ Mussels ($98 for sharing / $22 for individual) served with garlic bread; Chicken & the Sea ($78 for sharing / $25 for individual) – Spanish paella rice with seafood and chicken; and the crazy metre-long Mohamed Sultan Meter Dog ($55 for sharing / $18 for individual) which features veal and chicken curry wurst and is F.O.C. if you can wolf this baby down within six minutes!
Yellowfin Tuna Poke
For some regular-sized grub, look to the ‘Spathe Classics’ section – timeless crowd pleasers include the Yellowfin Tuna Poke ($18) – a sashimi appetiser mixed with creamy avocado chunks, tangy shiso-yuzu vinaigrette, and crispy shallots; the 12 Hour Slow-cooked Pork Belly ($24) – superb comfort food accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes and a poached egg; and the signature Spathe Australian Angus Burger ($22) – juicy Angus beef patty with a sunny side up and red pepper chutney sandwiched between toasted homemade brioche buns, complete with a side of Cajun spiced garlic fries.
Poached Pear Charlotte Royal (left) and Waffle Mania (right)
Don’t think twice about desserts here because they’re all worth it. Daily specials aside, standard items on the menu are sweets like the Poached Pear Charlotte Royal ($11) – silky Madagascan vanilla custard paired with poached pear slices and finally, ringed with lady fingers. For lovers of sticky pudding, there’s the Sticky Toffee Pudding ($12) which is served with homemade rum and raisin ice cream and drenched in warm toffee sauce. However, if you have to choose just one, we say go for the Waffle Mania ($13). Topped with your choice of either nutella, maple syrup, or a scoop of homemade ice cream, words cannot describe how incredibly light and fluffy these waffles are. You’d have to try it to believe it!
