Headed down to City Square because of a Passion card voucher that entitles a free slice of cake with any purchase from The Royal's Cafe (min spend of 8 SGD). Well, it was the kind of afternoon that made one hot and lazy - perfect for a quick snack. We ordered a Club Sandwich and got a Walnut Cake with the voucher. We also watched the cast of Ah Boys to Men getting sandwiched by a host of young spirited ladies *ahem*...ANY way, we didn't intentionally came for said Club Sandwich, but was more interested in a small bite (which would serve as a prelude to a larger bite for the Mister at another restaurant) that would allow us to utilise the voucher (which had been a PR in my purse for almost 6 months). So the trio of us (including my bestie who tagged along for the day) weren't expecting something to go gaga-ing over. In fact, the Mister commented that he could make a sandwich right at home. Boy, was he going to eat those words with the sandwich (yup, he liked it).Firstly, the sandwich came in a delectably presentable serving, complete with salad and a nice portion of potato chips (if you want more, then get your own bag ). In essence, the sandwich comprised of lettuce, decent chunks of tomato and cucumber harmoniously blended with egg mayonnaise (not the usual kind of mayo, as there were hints of cinnamon detected), and two slices of breakfast ham strategically placed between three slices of wholemeal bread (this was remarkably soft, as compared to sandwiches we've eaten from other similar cafes where the bread felt as dry as the leftovers from the day before). What completed the picture was a special vinaigrette luxuriously drizzled on the salad. This lent a moist aftertaste to it - especially if you eat the sandwich before the salad. Since sandwiches by themselves tend to leave the mouth feeling dry (in our case, that is), we usually have to finish each mouthful (or two) with a sip of iced/warm tea. Not with this sandwich. ZERO sips! The crisp and saltiness of the potato chips complemented the egg mayo in the sandwich, so what you get at the end of the day is a combination of flavours that is quite refreshing, moist and crunchy simultaneously, and doesn't wear your palate to the point where you feel sick (aka jelat). The walnut cake, presented hints of mocha and cinnamon that gave the cake a distinctively pleasant taste but paled slightly to the sandwich. In summary, the sheer simplicity of the ingredients in the sandwich brillantly juxtaposed (as well as a clever choice of accompaniments) made for a remarkably sensational snacking experience - yours for the price of about 10 SGD. continue reading

We were there for a purpose, that was to celebrate a friend's birthday. After walking and looking at the cake shops, we decided to get one for the Royal's cafe. It was a tiramisu cake and it was square in shape. Service was good as we left the cake there as we were not done with our shopping. The service staff gladly accepts our request. The cake was very delicious. The texture was so soft and the cream was so smooth that even single bite of the cake seems to be melting in your mouth. A little bit sweet but has a very good flavour. The chocolate or cocoa powder on top of the cake has a slight bitter taste and it compliments the sweetness of the cake very well. Yummy. continue reading
