Remember the breakfasts you used to have growing up? Nasi Lemak wrapped in banana leaf, a warm plate of Roti Prata or Grandma’s homemade Chee Cheong Fun? In our fast developing society, hawker or coffee shop stalls selling these traditional delicacies are fast depleting. Thankfully, there are still a decent number of these stalls around serving us our favourite morning comfort food. A popular staple amongst Singaporeans is rice cakes topped off with fried radish, or as we call it – Chwee Kueh. Some names that probably just popped into your head might include Tiong Bahru Market’s Jian Bo or Bedok Shui Guo. Here, we have compiled a list of your favourite Chwee Kueh stalls from around the island. Tomorrow’s breakfast, checked!
1. Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh
ghim moh
If you ask around for the best place to have Chwee Kueh, Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh will rank as one of the top. Still sporting a traditional storefront, this stall is manned by its original owner, who has decades of experience under his belt. He wakes up in the wee hours every morning to hand pour the rice mixtures into the moulds every day. And his dedication to his work pays off with the long queues that the stall gets later that day, especially during breakfast hours. This is probably the closest you can get to the traditional ones made with clay moulds back in the 1960s. Price: 4 for $1.20 Opening Hours: 6:15am to 7pm Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh, Ghim Moh Road Market and Food Centre, Blk 20 Ghim Moh Road #01-31, Singapore 270020 (Image: Openrice user, wenxi)
2. Jian Bo Shui Kueh
jian bo
Touted as the best Chwee Kueh in Singapore by critics, we have no doubts that Jian Bo Shui Kueh offers one of the best Chwee Kuehs we have ever tasted. This is also a must-eat for those who dine at Tiong Bahru Market. Already generous with their Chye Poh and chilli, the friendly store owners are happy to give you even more upon request. Since these rice cakes are steamed fresh daily, their soft texture is hard to beat. Price: 8 for $2.40 Opening Hours: 6:30am to 11pm Jian Bo Shui Kueh, Tiong Bahru Market, 30 Seng Poh Road, #02-05, Singapore 168898 (Image: Openrice user, wallychel)
3. Bedok Shui Guo
bedok shui guo
Arguably the cheapest Chwee Kueh in Singapore, Bedok Shui Guo reigns as the best in the east. For many, a good Chwee Kueh is defined by the Chye Poh and many have sung praises of Bedok Shui Guo’s fried radish, which is known to be given generously, despite its low price. Rest assured that the Chye Poh here is not overly salty and pairs up nicely with the naturally plainer tasting steamed rice cakes. Located conveniently at Bedok Interchange Food Centre, there is no reason not to visit this popular stall for some appetizing Chwee Kueh. Price: 4 for $1 Opening Hours: 8am to 11pm Bedok Shui Guo, Bedok Interchange Food Centre, Blk 207 New Upper Changi Road #01-53, Singapore 460207 Bedok Chwee Kueh (Clementi Branch), Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre, Blk 448 Clementi Ave 3 #01-32, Singapore 120448 Bedok Shui Kueh (Ang Mo Kio Branch), Ang Mo Kio 628 Market, Blk 628 Ang Mo Kio Ave 4, #01-96, Singapore 560628 (Image: Openrice user, minischnauzer)
4. Tiong Bahru Tian Bo Shui Kueh
tian bo
Don’t be confused by this stall’s name as it is located at Albert Centre Market & Food Centre. With snaking queues especially during breakfast hours, this stall is a popular choice for many and even sells an assortment of Nyonya Kuehs and other breakfast items. Tian Bo Shui Kueh is positioned in the heart of the Bugis district, making it a very convenient location for many. Even though this stall does not specialize in just Chwee Kueh, it is still a top pick for all the customers here. Tip: Forget the yam cakes and Nyonya Kuehs here, dive straight into their freshly steamed chwee kuehs for a satisfying meal. Price: 6 for $1.50 Opening Hours: 6am to 10pm Tiong Bahru Tian Bo Shui Kueh, Albert Centre Market & Food Centre, 270 Queen St #01-72, Singapore 180270 (Image: Openrice user, kymcat)
5. Xin Xi Chwee Kueh
xin xi
This name might sound familiar to you because they have a total of three outlets here in Singapore. Although they may also offer other breakfast options, you will want to go straight for their delicious Chwee Kueh. Steamed in-store every day, expect only fresh and warm rice cakes served with skilfully fried radish. Put a generous serving of their fragrant chilli to enhance the taste of your Chwee Kueh. Tip: Have your Chwee Kueh right away to avoid the oily mess when you take away. Price: 4 for $1.10 Opening Hours: 7am to 3pm Xin Xi Chwee Kueh, Bedok 85 Market, Blk 85 Bedok North St 4 #01-68, Singapore 460085 (Image: Openrice)
