1933 is a cafe which is opened by BreadTalk. To most, it feels like an atas version of ToastBox. The cafe offers local cuisine, priced reasonable, considering the high class shopping mall.Tea Set ($10.90++)The cafe offers a reasonable priced tea set during the afternoon. It is pandan chiffon cake served with a choice of tea or coffee. As the coffee machine was down, the choices were limited to mostly tea.Gula Melaka Pandan Chiffon 香兰椰糖蛋糕 ($8.90)Childhood favourite soft pandan chiffon is baked with bits of palm sugar for that extra Nyonya flavour and served with delightful Gula Melaka syrup.Interesting chiffon cake with a layer of Gula Melaka filling in it. If not enough, there's a serving of rich Gula Melaka syrup to dip with. The cake was light and fluffy. Although it looked like there was lots of cream with dessicated coconut on top of the cake, I felt that it gave the cake a kind of moist feel.Served with Green Mango Peach fruit tea 有机芒果桃味茶 ($8)The tea was light and fruity in taste. 1933 is a new F&B concept from The BreadTalk Group and diners can look forward to hearty soups served in bread bowls to all-time favourites like Hainanese Chicken Rice.A salad worth trying is the Sawadee Greens [$14.90], a Thai-styled seafood salad with that punch of zest to the plain old salad. However, it comes with a steeper price for a simple salad.Priced at the same amount is the Nanyang Curry Chicken In Bread Bowl [$14.90]. Curry chicken is my weak spot and that explains why I'm head over heels with this! This could get messy but it is not stopping me to enjoy this aromatic and flavourful coconut-based curry in a crusty and soft bread bowl, the curry kampong chicken is a cosy and warming indulgence.A interesting take on pandan cake, Gula Melaka Pandan Cake [$8.90]. Out of all the new restaurants and cafes that opened up on Level 1 of Capitol Piazza, and my bucket list to visit the top 3 herein, well, just to say that 1933's turn wasn't supposed to have been up yet. But, through another beautiful mistake, I decided to venture into the elegant vintage cafe restaurant and got hooked enough to stay put.Anyway, *Charmaine and I decided to have dinner at 1933 Cafe, charmed by the nostalgic art-deco settings as well as friendly, warm hospitality of the service crew here.The Sawadee Greens (SGD$14.90) - seafood salad tossed with Thai dressings, made up of fresh plump shrimps, minced meat, cherry tomatoes, nuts and greens. The citrusy dressing (not due to the squeezing of the lime juice in) was both refreshing and a palate teaser, bringing the salad up to another level altogether. The freshness here was very distinctive, marking this to be yet another good selection by us.Next, Nanyang Curry Chicken in a Bread Bowl (SGD$14.90), comprising of two of our favoritest things - thick, spicy curry with aromatic coconut notes, served piping hot in very crispy bread bowl. If you love bread with good curry, and if you love succulent, soft chicken meat in your curry - then this was probably created specially just for you.Finally, we managed to squeeze in a slice of Pineapple Tart (SGD$8.90) with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. No, this is not your Chinese New Year pineapple tarts, but a slice of crusty tart filled with sweet pieces of pineapple fruits and a solid, fluffy centre. I love this tart, love how the taut texture caved in upon contact with the teeth and melting into beautiful buttery pastry dust on the tongue - the effect was almost mesmerising. The bread talk group has recently launched its latest concept and added a new bistro at the newly refurnished Capitol Piazza to the cafe scene - 1933. Serving a wide range of asian food, this classy looking place warps diners back to the days of 1933.Was invited to a tasting and here's what we got:1933 Power Carrot A French bread bowl - the bread was crunchy and absorbs the soup well. A hint of orange zest in the thick broth of carrots.We loved every mouthful. Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice Chicken was tender but as a whole, the dish lacked that flavourful kick. At almost $20 for this, your expectation of our favourite local dishes will likely soar to the roof. Unfortunately, it left us wanting. Nanyang Curry Chicken Generous serving of ingredients and the curry tasted pretty good. Similar bread bowl being used and we completely wiped out the dish. The bread was the highlight. Grill Pork Loin A dish that's hard to perfect, and sure enough it wasn't up to mark. Grilled in thyme, bay leaves, honey and brine of the rack, the pork on the table somehow lacked in flavour. They offer you a choice of hainanese, black pepper or mushroom sauce. I'd go for the black pepper any day.1933 Speciality Coffee (4handsCoffee was to our liking and much better than most bistros. The newly renovated Capitol Building is building up to be one upscale eating destination, what with the likes of Dazzling Cafe, Angelina and Four Seasons sprouting up - all established names overseas. The Breadtalk Group brings in its own new '30s colonnial-themed open concept bistro here, 1933, specialising in local and western comfort food. The pretty space is compact and spans two levels, but comes with equally chi-chi menu prices to match.Dishes for the nightDrinksMixed Berries Smoothie, Mango Smoothie, Guava Apple Smoothie ($10 each) The drinks menu included some specialties such as smoothies and milkshakes. Of the 3 smoothies, we all agreed that the refreshing Mixed Berries was the best.Gula Melaka Coconut Milkshake ($12) Latte ($4.50)While the flavours offered for the milkshakes sounded tantalising, the Gula Melaka Coconut Milkshake didn't exactly work out as it was far too much cream, to the extent of overshadowing the gula melaka and coconut taste. Surprisingly though, their coffee was very, in fact more than decent. Apparently, it is brewed from Nanyang-based coffee beans, instead of the Arabica or Robusta we usually get in cafes. I enjoyed the smooth latte. which was not overly acidic, along with the cute '1933' coffee art.1933 Power CarrotPower Carrot Bread Bowl ($9.60)Our favourite starter though was the Power Carrot Soup Bread Bowl. The bread was crispy on the outside, yet chewy and slightly fluffy still, while the soup was full of carrot flavour. Approved.MainsNanyang Curry Chicken Bowl ($14.90)Still the same addictive bread bowl, but in this Nanyang Curry Chicken rendition. It would be better if the chicken chunks came boneless. Nevertheless, the curry was a good consistency, and coupled with the bread, was pretty satisfying.Grilled Pork Loin ($28.90)Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice ($16.80)For the Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice, the rice fared better than the chicken, which lacked flavour though tender. The price for this hits nearly the top tier for chicken rice in Singapore (the topmost being the famous Chatterbox Chicken Rice). For a bistro not specialising in the dish, it would be better if they lowered the price in order for customers to be willing to try it. Get your chicken rice fix from other places, unless you feel an extremely urgent must-satisfy craving.DessertGula Melaka Pandan Chiffon ($8.90)We were silently wishing this was some sort of lava cake. It wasn't. Still, this pandan chiffon cake was fluffy and full of pandan flavour, Paired with the gula melaka, it tasted like a chiffon version of ondeh ondeh.The misses aside, some of the dishes here are definitely worth a try if you do not mind the slightly high price points. Skip the 'local signatures', since you can get far better at cheaper prices from our hawker centres.
