Ah Hoi's Kitchen is situated in Hotel Jen Tanglin (formerly known as "Traders Hotel"), and is famous for its Singaporean and seafood dishes. The interior is a large dining hall with vintage Asian furniture whereas the alfresco area offers poolside dining. Coupled with friendly service, how could one not enjoy their meals here? I knew not what to expect when I came for the lunchtime 12 For 12 Promotion - mainly featuring 12 nasi padang dishes for a mere SGD$12.00.The Ayam Penyet (Fried Chicken with Spices) - very crispy on the inside and tender on the inside. The golden crispy crumbs sprinkled over the chicken added to the crispiness and made the flavorful chicken even more so.I also tried the Tahu Telur (deep fried beancurd with egg), a deceptively simple dish with complex textures. The exterior is flaky with crisps; the interior was silken smooth with the tender beancurd and egg, so the texture contrast was simply awesome. The peanut sauce slowly led to spiciness through all the crisp and smooth softness; we could not stop eating this dish. Now, it is interesting to find Kaki Babi Masak Cuka Hitam (braised pork shank in black vinegar) at an eatery selling nasi padang, so this is a must-try. I enjoy braised pork shank usually, and must say that this is very succulent, checking all the right boxes for appearance, taste and texture. For full review and more photographs, please feel free to visit:http://thearcticstar.blogspot.sg/2015/02/lunch-at-ah-hois-kitchen-hotel-jen.html continue reading

Ah Hoi's Kitchen has been known in the Singapore food scene for serving authentic local dishes and seafood. My first visit to Ah Hoi was a few years back and I have first hand experience enjoying their Hor Fun and other local dishes. Currently helmed by Sous Chef Lam Loon Tuck, with the forte of local dishes from the wok.Ah Hoi is located on the 4th floor of the Traders Hotel, walking through to the other side of the swimming pool after you exit the lift. The setup of Ah Hoi is an open concept. Although there are air-conditioners and fans, the atmosphere will be slightly better if the temp can be dropped another few degrees. Otherwise, on a hot day you might want to keep the cold drinks coming to cool you down.Recently, Ah Hoi's just added 12 new Sri Lankan Crab dishes to their menu. Tonight we (Chubby Botak Koala & his friend 'M') tasted three of those dishes: Crab Bee Hoon, Salted Egg Crab, and Prickly Piquant Crab.Well, before we get to the crabs dishes, we savour some of the local dishes provided by Ah Hoi. From the charcoal BBQ, we have the local favourite of satay. The version here is slightly smaller, but sweet and well seasoned. It was well barbecued where it is nicely charred and caramelised. It is good to eat it while it's hot, however it easily becomes chewy when its cold. I prefer the meat on my satay to be thicker though. Also from the BBQ, we had combo surf and turf. King Prawns, Beef Steak, Pork Ribs and Calamari. All the meat and seafood are cooked to perfection. They are all tender, juicy and succulent. The calamari with asam sauce just opens up your appetite furthermore. The first crab dish for the night was Crab Bee Hoon. This is the dry version, with a huge crab in it it. The meat of the crab are thick and filled the shell ('very solid'). The superior stock was a little subtle but you can feel it absorbed in the bee hoon and cabbage Watch out for the dried shrimp, which might surprise your taste buds. Good Crab Dish. The second crab dish was Salted Egg Crab. Ah Hoi version has a thick salted egg gravy that coated the crabs evenly. The crabs they use was just solid, full of meat. The cooking time was just right, however the gravy can be too much on the sweet part, thus it is missing the savory salted egg taste. You can taste the slight fragrance of the kaffir lime leaves (a bit different from other salted egg crab dishes that I have tasted) and there are some mini bits of chilli padi to spice up the dish. The last crab dish served was Prickly Piquant Crab. Ah Hoi wok-fried the crab with sichuan pepper, pickled garlic and citrus salt. In short, this is the mala version of the crab dish. I personally find the seasoning are just to overpowering for the crab, as I prefer to taste the natural sweetness of the crab. It is not my cup of tea, however others that like sichuan pepper numbing spice will definitely love this dish. From the three crab dishes, I like the crab bee hoon best and salted egg crab second. The best part of all the crab dishes, was that they are all very meaty and fresh. Definitely uses good quality Sri Lankan Crabs. In case you are wondering the price for the crabs, for crabs that weigh less than 1 kg are priced S$7.20++ per 100 grams. Those weighing more than one kilo are priced at S$9.20++ per 100 grams.Overall, Ah Hoi are very creative with their new crab dishes. Although it is not my number one place to go for crabs, they provide a good alternative. If crabs are not to your liking, make sure you try their BBQ selections. I truly enjoy it. Cheers!!Thank you very much to Ah Hoi's Kitchen for the invitation. For the complete Chubby Botak Koala dining experience, click/copy the link below:http://www.chubbybotakkoala.com/2014/05/Ah-Hoi-Kitchen.html continue reading

Situated next to a poolside of the Trader's Hotel, Ah Hoi's Kitchen provides a tranquil and relaxing ambience to dine in. This quiet setting allows us diners to really appreciate the meal. The waiter was very animated and recommended us on some of their specialties we ought to try. Even though the waiting time was quite long, the food itself made up for the wait. The food was delicious and looked aesthetically pleasing. In addition, there was a 20% off the total bill when using the OCBC credit card and the bill was not as expensive as my family thought it would be. Hence, I believe coming to Ah Hoi's restaurant was worth the money. continue reading

My mum picked this place for her Birthday celebration. We ordered the Mango Salad wit Crispy Fish Skin. The mango is sour but if you eat it with the fish skin, the salty and sour taste is balance. The Crispy Fried Baby Squids in Fruit Sauce is like eating 2 dishes. Chinese Rojak and Crispy Fried Baby Squid together. I love the crunchy Crispy Baby Squid and the flavour is strong with pieces of pineapple. The Crispy Noodle with Prawns make a "Wow" entrance with the towering crispy noodle sitting in a lake swimming with fresh prawn and bak choy. The big prawns were very fresh and noodle is crispy. I like the prawns are de-shelled.The Steam Cod Fish with Crispy Bean Crumbs were rather expensive at $50. It has a light Superior Soya sauce taste that goes with the fish and presented in a fish shaped plate. The Sri Lankan Black Pepper Crab cost more than $70 but the size is smaller than other seafood restaurant. That is why I say it is expensive. But the taste of the strong black pepper is heavenly. Even though the taste is good but the prices are too high. I would rather go to other seafood place if I am going for Crabs. Generally the appetizer dishes pricing is ok at around $10 but the main dishes are very expensive at $50 for noodle or fish. The place is not fine dining, it has heavy metal outdoor furniture both outdoor near the pool and indoor. It is air-con indoor and the waiter is dress in T-shirt and sport short. I do not think the price is worth paying for this kind of environment. Service were not great, the waiter has to be asked to change plate when we were eating crabs. continue reading

This is in Trader's Hotel, next to the swimming pool. You can charge the tab to your room bill, if you are a guest in the hotel. In fact, you can order your dishes, then go back to your room, they will call your room number when the dishes are ready. It serves good seafood, as the chef is quite good at it. The sweet and sour fish is good, but my favourite is still the ginger fish as it is light and refreshing, the soup base is so good it is indescribable. The fish is very tender, and the peaceful ambience makes this a stark contrast to the noisy and crowded seafood places like Jumbo etc where I always feel stressed. It is a quiet place at night except the occasional spashes heard from the pool area, as most of the guests are dining in the cafeteria area at the first floor. continue reading
