How to Eat Alone in a Restaurant…and Enjoy it
2012-09-26
Like what they always say, it’s much more fun when you dine out with your group of friends. However, there are times when you want to try out a new restaurant but none of your friends is available. And so, you are left with this dilemma: Should I just eat by myself or not?
Eating alone gives you the freedom to choose whatever dishes you want to order
Though many people dread the idea of walking in a restaurant and saying, “Table for 1,” it may not be as bad as it seems. In fact, those who have tried it have said that they actually enjoyed their alone time because they really paid more attention to the food. If you want to try and see if dining alone isn’t really that bad, here are some tips to get you through the whole dining experience: 1. Choose a seat at the bar or counter Think of it this way: dining by yourself is a good way to meet new people. When choosing a restaurant, pick a seat in the bar or counter. If there are other people enjoying their food there, don’t be shy… try to engage them in a conversation. If you get lucky, you win a friend and also get to go home with a full tummy. 2. Choose a restaurant with entertainment You may have a livelier experience when you pick a place with some form of entertainment such as a pianist, band, sports game, etc. If you can have a seat near the performer, then pick that spot. Aside from being able to enjoy the performance better, the loud noise will make the atmosphere not conducive for chatting. 3. Bring reading materials Sometimes, getting your order may take a while. To avoid being bored while you wait, you can opt to bring reading materials such as newspapers or books. This is also one of those times when your iPad or iPhone may come in handy. You can keep yourself entertained by surfing the web, checking your email, or chatting with your friends. 4. Take your time to enjoy the food When you eat alone, you can order whatever food you want (since you don’t have any friends to share it with). And so, take this opportunity to focus on the food more. Act like a food critic and pretend that you are reviewing the restaurant. Savour each bite and if you can, take photos! When you do this, there’s a big chance that the waiter may even pay more attention to you. Dining alone can be a positive thing if you have the confidence and the right mind set. Just keep in mind that when you are by yourself, you have the freedom to choose whichever restaurant and dishes you’re craving for! Now, wouldn’t that make it an enjoyable dining moment?
