Get the Best of Thai Cuisine at Nara Thai
2013-09-12
Good international restaurants are meant to be shared. One such place is Thailand’s Nara Thai, which was founded by Yuki Srikarnchana back in 2006. With a simple goal of sharing authentic Thai street food in a more comfortable setting, the concept was quickly picked up by foodies and later on grew to become a popular chain in Bangkok. It has also consistently appeared in Thailand Tatler’s Best Restaurants List since 2007.
Nara Thai, which brings authentic Thai cuisine in a comfortable setting, is officially open for business
Having established itself as one of the best Thai restaurants, it was only natural for Nara Thai to expand overseas. Backed up by managing partners John Wangwanitkul, Christopher Tan, Director Alex Ye, and other local investors, the restaurant has finally made it to Singapore with the first outlet opening on 12 September 2013. Occupying a nook at ION Orchard's B3 level, Nara Thai evokes the same look and feel as all its other restaurants in Bangkok.
Thai culture with a modern twist at Nara Thai’s outlet in Singapore
For the ION outlet, interior designer Pongsak Mahattanasakun from WM Imagineer used a lot of browns and purples in reconstructing a piece of Nara Thai in Singapore. The 112-seater restaurant has a very sleek and modern look, thanks to the use of wood-panelled walls and furniture. You also get a feel of royalty with its deep purple leather chairs fit for a royal banquette. Thai culture is pretty much evident with the bell cut-outs reminiscent of temples and Thai artworks accenting the walls. Authentic Thai Food
Start your meal right with the Hors d’oeuvre Nara
Nara Thai brings to Singapore authentic dishes which has made it so popular in its country. For appetisers, you can’t go wrong with the Hors d’oeuvre Nara, which consists of Tord Mun Pla (Thai fish cakes) topped with peanuts, Gai Hor Bai Toei (Pandan Chicken), Satay Gai (Barbequed Chicken in Turmeric and Coconut Milk Marinade), and Yum Som O (Pomelo Salad). With just one order, there’s already a bit of everything for sampling: a spicy but refreshing salad, nutty satay; and sweet and juicy chicken. Have these with other nibbles such as the Kao Tang Na Tang(Rice Crackers) and the Pla Kung (hot and spicy salad with Thai herbs).
Stir-fried Chicken with Chilli and Hot Basil and the Hot and Spicy Soup with Prawns and Dill Pattie Omelette
Think the appetisers are already spicy? Well, you’ll have to wait for the main courses for your taste buds to officially feel the burn (in a good way). For something with a zing, start with the Kaeng Som Cha Om Kung Sod (Hot and Spicy Soup with Prawns and Dill Pattie Omelette) or the Gai Phad Kra Pao (Stir-fried Chicken with Chilli and Hot Basil). From a range of 1 to 10, we think the spiciness level of both items is 10 because it just creeps up on you after a few mouthfuls. Better order these with the legendary Thai Iced Tea, which has a sweet and milky taste to rid you off the lingering taste.
Stir-fried Soft Shell Crab with Curry and the Crispy Whole Grouper with Crunchy Lemongrass
There are mellow dishes which focus on the richness of the flavours rather than spiciness. Some of our favourites are the Phu Nim Pad Pong Karee (Stir-fried Soft Shell Crab with Curry) which is just smothering with sauce; and the Pla Gao Tord Ta Krai (Crispy Whole Grouper with Crunchy Lemongrass) which is crispy fish with fried lemongrass. Do eat this with the sauce for added flavour.
Customers are free to mix and match the toppings for their coconut ice cream
Desserts also deserve a shout out at Nara Thai. A popular order is the I-thim Nara (Nara’s Coconut Ice Cream) which is served with assorted condiments: home-made red ruby, roasted peanuts, nata de coco, palm tree seeds, jack fruit, sweet potatoes, cendol, and corn. Diners are free to customise their desserts and fill it with toppings which they want. This treat is such a perfect ending to a literally sizzling hot meal at Nara Thai. -- Address: ION Orchard, 2 Orchard Turn, #B3-21 Singapore 238801 Tel.
