The Food
I ordered Fish and Chips served with smooth and flaky fresh dory fish, crispy potato wedges and a lime which is quite different from other stalls which put lemon. The fish was well marinated with crispiness on the outside and inside very soft and fresh. The potato wedges were not too oily and quite crispy also.

The Price
Reasonably priced at $9 with decent portion

Overall
I will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this!

Breakfast
Smile 2012-07-10

Wessex Estate is a very ulu place to go unless one drives. Now with the opening of the circle line, getting to Wessex Estate is easier now. It is a good place to get away from the busy urban life amidst in colonial buildings and greenery.

Colbar which was an army canteen during the British Colony days. The rustic design and decor have not changed over the years.

Colbar has an extensive menu of Asian and Western fare. It also has a good selection of imported beers. As I was not too hungry, I had the breakfast set from their all day breakfast menu. The food was slightly above average only. However it is a bit pricey for a nostalgia eatery.

Okay
Just OK 2012-01-18

Colbar, or Colonial Bar for short, was built in 1953 along Jalan Hang Jebat (off Portsdown Road) and mainly served as a canteen for soldiers who lived in the neighbouring estate which is now known as Wessex Estate. It has since relocated to a new site which is a stone's throw away from the old one and is still very popular with the expatriate community.

Since my gf and I were in the area, we took the opportunity to try out their food and soak in the tranquil atmosphere, away from the maddening world outside.

A serene and laid back environment close to nature and far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its really a place where time seems to have stopped, a scene from a different era.

Well enough of the place. Down to the food. I ordered the Chocolate Milkshake ($4) which in my opinion, was ridiculously overpriced. It looked and tasted exactly like normal Chocolate milk ($1.50), except that it had frothy layer at the top. Talk about repackaging.

Chicken Chop - This dish was as normal as it gets. Its like one of those chicken chops you eat at the hawker centre and totally forget how it tastes like the next day. The only thing I liked about this dish was that it came with button mushrooms, which I personally prefer. Other than that, the wedges were a little too soggy and very uninspiring.

Fish & Chips - The old man at the counter recommended this to me and taste wise, it was not too bad. It was a little over fried though, rendering the batter a little hard and burnt. A honestly very average dish which can easily be found elsewhere. Not really worth the $9 for it.

Bacon Sandwich - A total rip off kind of describes the bacon sandwich ($5). It was just two bacon strips from the oven sandwiched between 2 slices of bread with a little margarine spread across. I can make this at home for less than 50 cents!

Dinner cost us $25, which is not a big sum, but totally not worth it for the quality and quantity of food. However, factor in the surroundings and maybe the vote might tilt. Nice place to hang out, but watch out for the mosquitoes. Also, please note that there is no air conditioning no matter where you seat.

Colbar
Just OK 2011-10-31

I must say the place is quite quaint and charming, and you don’t quite feel like you’re in Singapore. It serves very old-school Hainanese-style Asian and Western dishes, from chicken curry and fried mee hoon to mixed grills and all manner of combinations of sausages/bacon/eggs/chips/beans/mushrooms/peas.
I had the dry fried mamee, expecting the noodles to be like instant noodles, but they turned out to be thick fat noodles instead. Still, their Asian food seems to be better than their Western. This was on the salty and oily side
Food is just so so but overpriced

Colonial style environment
Smile 2011-10-26

It was the first time I get to this eating place. We are full of expectations... what is Coldbar? So, it's actually Colbar instead of the word - Cold. I would think it meant Colonial style bar. The place is decorated with the 60s or 70s' items and it makes a good environment for families with kids.

Our group ordered many dishes. Just to name some, the beef sandwich is great, the beef was tender and it goes well with the bread. The curry chicken rice was good as well, the chicken was tender and soft, its easy to manage. As for the Hokkien mee in gravy, it's normal and the sausages, mushroom and sunny side up was like homemade. I would recommend others to take the beef, the steak that my friends had was great.

   Hokkien Mee

   Tomato juice

Good ol hainanese food in old school atmosphere
Smile 2011-03-09

A fantastic place to escape and just chillax over a cider and good old hainanese food.

From filet steak served with baked beans and fries, to hainanese chap chye and pork chop, this family-friendly joint housed in a tin shed also serves a pretty good selection of imported beer and ciders (even an organic one).

Recommended Dish(es):
Steak, Hainanese Pork Chop
