It was, like the rest of the island, a wet Sunday afternoon at the Star Vista and had just emerged victorious from a hearty meal at a diner, looking for some sweetbits to wash down the savouries. Enter BlackBall, heralded by one of our local media darlings, Zhang Yao Dong. The shop was strategically located next to several full-scale diners (e.g. Porn's and Watami Casual Japanese Cuisine) although Owl Coffee had found a roost in the immediate vicinity as well.

Fair enough, BlackBall was a little shop (only four tables with which to seat around) and gave you the up and trendy impression akin to KOI, Gong Cha, and the whatnot. We ordered their, erm, signature BlackBall Signature - warmed.

Firstly, we were pretty disappointed with the presentation of the dessert - so unlike that shown in the flyer! Basically, what we saw was a layer of grass jelly that had the rest of the toppings and ingredients securely tucked underneath it. The uninitiated would have thought that we just ordered a bowl of chin chow from some chin chai kopi tiam.

Secondly, completely contrary to its namesake, the YamQ was more like a P in the adage, "mind your P's and Q's". Not only were the YamQs not chewy, they were rather boiled tapioca-like in texture. That's a no-no. The Yam Balls and Sweet Potato Balls were guilty of the same charges as well. The pearls and red beans were what you would expect - normal.

The only saving grace, ironically, was the grass jelly that literally melted in your mouth (especially since we ordered the dessert warmed). Perhaps that was why it was burying the other less-delectable ingredients.

As how student essays normally end with the topic sentence, I would do this review accurate justice to say that this is probably (if not definitely) my first and last encounter with BlackBall. A 4.90 SGD encounter, that is.
