Right outside the coffee shop, there are only about two or three tables outside where you can slowly sip your kopi and munch on kaya toast. The rest of the seats are located inside the shop where it is supposed to be air-conditioned. But during our visit, it the air-con was down. Diners can choose to sit indoor or outdoor to enjoy their meal. Usually, the outdoor
eating is more popular as it is more cooling and carries a greater traditional vibe. Tong Ah also serves cze char dishes at the later part of the day. Aside from the traditional kopi which you can order to accompany the toast, the tea here is also very fragrant. The boss has been using Sri Lankan tea from the same supplier for decades and he makes a special effort to age the tea so as to develop greater flavour.

My favourite item is French toast with kaya. Slices of bread were dipped into the egg mixture before grilling it. It was really fragrant. The egg covering was slightly crispy and soft in the inner. With the butter being placed on top of the toast, the heat from the bread melts it naturally. The kaya further value-add this dish. Unlikely the usual, it was not sweet and has a very thick texture (lumpy).

White soft bread was steamed and sandwiched with butter and kaya mixture. It was really soft and “chewy”.

Kaya and butter melting within

A traditional style
breakfast is never complete without soft-boiled eggs with runny yolk as a side, and usually served with a dash of white pepper and dark soy sauce.

Bf was in the mood for a heavy breakfast, so he also orders the traditional nasi lemak which is packed in the wrapped in pandan leaf in a triangle shaped packet.

Within the pack, it consists of hot spicy sauce (sambal chilli), malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk, small anchovies (ikan bilis) and a small fried fish.
