Definitely not what it seems like on Open Rice, everything is above $10 and the food is okay, nothing special for the price. They charge for tap water which was shocking. Would never come again or recommend. continue reading

I have heard of Five Star Hainese Chicken Rice for a while, but never gotten to try it. Since we were craving for chicken rice that evening, The Beau and I decided to pop by Five Star. It was a nondescript little restaurant amongst a row of eateries along Bukit Timah area.We shared a plate of Prawn Paste Chicken (SGD$10.00) - very crispy skin and tender flesh. However, while there were hints of smokiness to enhance the flavor of this deep fried dish, we could not detect much of the taste of prawn paste. The Beau had a Chicken Rice (SGD$5.40) , roasted. The chicken meat (whatever we could find) was soft and tender, moistened with the sauce, and the skin was crispy. However, though we ordered chicken back / thigh, there was not much meat and we were just filtering bones from the chicken, sadly. The rice was of a good texture - not too soft nor too hard, and infused with the aromatic fragrance of ginger with chicken broth.I had a Wanton Noodle (SGD$4.00), dry. The wanton (dumplings) were tiny and infused in soup. The filling was tender but rather tasteless so I had to eat them with chilli. The noodle was soft, not the crispy way I usually prefer my noodles, but the gravy was fabulous. There was a very traditional taste to the wanton noodle sauce - a blend of dark sauce and something that I could not describe. I liked it enough that I could have eaten with noodles with the sauce alone. For full review and more photographs, please feel free to visit:http://thearcticstar.blogspot.sg/2014/10/dinner-at-five-star-chicken-rice.html continue reading

Nice food but inconsistent standard. The chicken rice was really so-so, nothing to shout about. The other dishes were okay, it was really like kopitiam with hainanese chicken rice. Price wise I think it is getting more and more expensive. Will only go back to patronize if nearby got nothing else to eat. Hahahahaha continue reading

We were sourcing for venue for dinner along bukit timah row of shop house and decided to try out this chicken rice shop ( quite a number of newspaper cuttings).service there is reasonable and prompt.shop have ample seats.we had the white & roasted chicken rice and a dumpling soup.the chicken taste OK only, was expecting kampung chickens' skin to have the 'crunchy' feel which is not the case here. rice is quite standard, no spectacularly fragrant.the dumpling soup is really not up to mark. dumpling seem not to be defrozed properly before cooking, the meat inside does not taste nice and soup is blend. continue reading

The Five Star chicken rice is super good and delicious. I would actually give them the rating of 10/10. I heard that the chickens they use are 100% kampong chicken which are cooked to the perfect texture. What I like most about is their fragrant chicken rice which isn’t oily and has a very fragrant smell.I like their service too, when I was there, the service they provided at their restaurant was impeccable. If you do not like you chicken with the chicken skin, they would be most happy to remove the bone as well as the chicken skin for you. For taking away service, the chicken meat will be packed nicely like any hotel restaurant packaging. One would like their take away packaging that comes with different compartments whereby the chicken rice and chicken are packed separately. As a matter of fact, the price may be a little higher by $1.00, but it is really worth trying. Next time I will like to try their chicken feet dipped with the special chilli sauce. continue reading
