Yam ring
Smile 2012-08-21
The yam ring here is one of my favourite choice of dishes among their food menu and is always a must order dish for me. The yam ring is very crispy and not too oily. The texture of the yam paste is very smooth and moist, which is not too sweet and with the natural fragrant of it too. The mixed vegetables topped on it are also very fresh and crunchy, which goes really well with the yam ring. The price is quite reasonable and the portion is good to serve at least four to six adults. Great to have it with the fragrant plain rice as well.

Standard dropped but still reasonably cheap and gd
Just OK 2012-07-10

The Katong branch of this cze char chain is more spiffy than the usual bare essentials-only, primary-coloured plastic chairs and simple air-conditioned coffeeshop style. Walls are white-washed, furniture is colour-coordinated, gleaming white floor tiles are correspondingly matching, lights are dimmed for a warm glow in contrast with the stark white interior. The design is decidedly clean cut, modern and fresh.

We had:

1) Sliced Fish with Spring Onion & Ginger ($11 for small) - thick slices of fried fish were meaty and fairly fresh. Not the best version I've tried but definitely above average

2) Fried Tofu with Seafood and Vegetable in Claypot ($9 for small) - chock full of ingredients, sliced fish, prawns, squid, snow peas, baby corn, peppers, snow peas, and of course, smooth and soft egg beancurd cubes. But what made this dish standout was the luscious slurpworthy gravy, infused with garlic and oyster sauce

3) "Chun Kee" Hor Fan ($11 for medium) - flat rice sheets flash fried with beansprouts and sliced fish in a light gravy. The standard here has dropped, the noodles were clumping together and the gravy was a little too starchy, but this is still one of the better versions of "san lou hor fan" around

Nah, not again

I was craving for Crab Bee Hoon at Melben but I couldn't beat the crazy queue and reservations. Thus I settled for this dish here. Oh well, it's just so-so. Crab is a little not fresh and somehow overwhemled with MSG.

Once and this is it.

Sliced beef with ginger and rice for dinner
Smile 2011-07-14

Tried the fried sliced beef with ginger and white rice. Smells good and meat of the beef cooked just nice. Very generous in the portion as well! The fried egg makes the whole plate of dish more colourful and increase my palate smile There's chinese saying " sik hiong mei " all in one! What a complete and nice meal.

Shrimp Paste Chicken
Smile 2011-06-16
I will always order Shrimp paste chicken from any Zi Char if I happened to see it in the menu. This is one of my favourite dish. The chicken wings are really well marinated and crispy. The flavour are so intense with the shrimp paste which make it really flavourable. Thumbs up! Will definitely go back to try other dish.
