Introduction
British celebrity cook Jamie Oliver is opening a restaurant in Singapore, his first in Asia. Conceived by Oliver and his Italian mentor, famed chef Gennardo Contaldo of the now-defunt Passione restaurant in London, the new restaurant will offer Italian fare such as fresh pasta and antipasta. Therefore, we still went ahead with their lunch menu.Jamie's Italian has both indoor and outdoor seating, but for a weather like Singapore, an indoor seating is always a preferred choice among majority of the diners. I has a narrow walkway from the entrance to the seating area, but pretty bright during the day which light streaming in from the glass windows, and overlooking to sea to the Universal Studios Singapore can be quite relaxing.Ordered a snack to chew on as we haven't eaten anything since morning, but it was not disappointing at all. Crispy Squid ($11.50), with garlicky mayo and lemon. Love the fried-crisp skin and chewy squid. Sufficient enough to be shared among 2 pax, but the tendency to ask for second helping is high.Prawn Linguine ($17.00), with fried garlicky prawns, shaved fennel, tomatoes, chilli & rocket. Portion is considered small, but every mouth of it will just tempt you to just carry on eating. I ordered the normal serving, where a larger serving cost $25.00. Perhaps I should have went for the larger serving, but as a first timer to Jamie's Italian, I do know now that food here is pretty promising.Baked Salmon ($23.50) is not in the menu, but recommended by crew as it is the "fish of the day" type.Jamie's Italian does serve promising and delicious food to diners, although the price is on the pricey side and with a smaller portion, which we assume and indeed, find it not enough to fill up our empty stomach. Just in case you are wondering, yes, this IS the famous restauarnt by Jamie Oliver himself, right in Singapore itself. Okay, so it has been around for a while, but the crowd-avoiding me refused to visit during periods of long queues and rushed eating slots. I finally got to eat at Jamie's Italian recently, thanks to the SIL for the suggestion and lovely treat.For mains, the SIL went for the Wild Mushroom and Smoked Mozarella Risotto (SGD$16.00 for small). If you are a mushroom lover, this dish would be perfect for you - filled with mushroom goodness; every bite was filled with the crunch of mushrooms and its rich velvety flavour. The acquerello rice grains were to a tautness, retaining the chewy texture.As for me, I chose the Octopus & Mussel Spaghetti (SGD$16.00 for small) - pasta nero with mussels and baby octopus, chilli and white wine. The pasta was a little on the hard side - I wonder if their pasta here is supposed to be on the more solid side? But I love my pasta this texture - chewy. The gravy was awesome, a touch of spice and full-bodied flavor in the gravy that complemented the fresh seafood items well.It was truly the art of using simple ingredients to create sumptuous pasta, and we enjoyed every morsel of food here. We made advanced reservations just in case. The busy restaurant was not 100% full at lunch hour on a Sunday. Small groups can be seated immediately if all in the party are present.The eatery is positioned as a casual diner with rustic bistro-like interiors. There is a small retail corner selling merchandise and Jamie's cookbooks.We were seated at the 'Singapura' corner with a nicely painted backdrop of our iconic Merlion and national flowers. Table settings are kept simple.In line with Jamie's beliefs, only the freshest, carefully sourced sustainable produce are used in their dishes. All pasta are made inhouse daily with organic ingredients.Some drinks for starters before the food arrives...Berry Blast $8.50++ and Apple Mojito $8.50++As usual, we ordered sides for sharing on top of our main courses. Crab & Avocado Bruschetta $14.50++, Crispy Squid w/ garlicky mayo & lemon $11.50++ and Baked Mushrooms w/ smoked buffalo mozzarella $12.50++.The cheesy baked mushroom is not for me. I had the other two dishes which were both delicious and well made.For my main course, I picked the Grilled Pork Chop $35.00++, marinated & cooked under a brick with parsley bagna cauda, apple, kohlrabi, lemon & crispy crackling (fried pig skin). The chunky pork chop was almost an inch thick, but was evenly cooked and did not lose its tenderness accept for some parts that was all lean meat which tasted slightly dry. It had the smokey BBQ aroma and tasted fab with the crunchy apple slaw. The crackling pig skin was great, like the ones we ate in Bali. I was pretty happy with my choice.Some other main dishes ordered were Lamb chop lollipops $32.00++, 220g Rump Steak $28.50++, Crab Spaghettini $16.00 / 24.50++ and Burger Italiano $27.50++. Most dishes were well received probably due to the quality ingredients used and fine execution.They also have kids menu for the kiddos, with cute names like Chicken Lollipops and Puppy Dogs. Free range chicken and organic sausages were used to make these mini set meals. None of the kids like the mini salad that comes with the meals, though they all gladly finished the main courses.We had an enjoyable meal at Jamie's, food and service was up to our expectations of a Celeb chef 's diner. Prices may be a little steep for some but food is hearty portioned, and made with fresh and healthy organic ingredients that don't come cheap. Having a great italian dinner at Jamie's Italian @ Vivo City , which a different concept taste from western food. I don't understand Italian language , so what is being written in the menu under italian language , i have no idea at all.Full blog review : http://cennds.blogspot.com/2013/09/jamies-italian.htmlPLANKStarter of the meal, served using a woodenAvailable on MEAT & FISH choice but we chose a meat PLANK.It contains of beef, pork , buffalo cheese ( white color ) , olive , and another type of cheese. There is one pork mixed together with a spice , chili and the staff advised us to eat that on the last one. But no worries on the spice level because it wasn't spicy and quite nice. Special Starter on that day :Bread with tomato sauceMain Course :Baked Salmon Mouth watering fresh salmon , but it was a bit of salty . .. Beef BurgerThe serving portion was big. And WAOW !!!. Decided to visit this restaurant during lunch hours as my friend & I had not tried their food yet. The restaurant serves fantastic & rustic Italian dishes. We ordered a 220g rump steak (with fries & salad as sides) & a cripsy pork as main course. I must say we really love the medium rare steak & super crispy pork very much. Great food, nice ambience & services but we find the food slightly pricey. The portion of food is just nice for ladies but probably not enough for a guy unless you ordered more food.Thus, it will be good to go with a group of friends to enjoy the variety of food.Since there were only 2 of us, we are unable to try out 'The Planks' – platters of meat & fish, its a great way to start, especially if you are in a big group. The Meat Plank consists of cured meats, cheeses, pickles and a crunchy salad. We would also like to try their pastas as well as we heard that their pastas are made fresh in-house daily. continue reading
