Joan Bowen was one of the first social enterprises to receive media attention. Its prices for mains are reasonable, most are below $20. Their staff are very pleasant and do their best for customers. Do call ahead before you go. They are often closed for private events or internal training. The Rosemary and herb chicken ($11) was quite good, the chicken was well-marinated although the presentation was rather simple. The Catch of the Day ($13) was pan-fried salmon, which was served on an uniquely-shaped plate, with a pat of butter and some greens. Some fries or mashed potato would have been nice. continue reading

Have to make a reservation if not may have to wait or if you don't mind the outdoor seating. Place is quiet and atmosphere is relaxing. Just a nice place to relax during lunch time away from the busy hustle just around the corner. Patience is the key word here. If you do not have time, I wouldn't recommend you to come here at all. Overall, the food here is not bad but is too pricey. The portion is a bit too little for their recommended dishes. But the fish and chips, cutlets' portion is good enough. Desserts are ok only. continue reading

This cafe is great! Not only cause of the food or the ambiance, but the idea behind the cafe. They hire workers with intellectual disabilities, giving them the chance to integrate into society. The whole cafe is run by them, expect for one or two staffs. And they does their job well! From ordering of dishes to serving food, i think they are doing a fantastic jobs. The food there are pretty decent, having tried the puffs and chicken wings. Especially when they are served hot. The whole cafe is pretty cosy. And they have a second floor that can be booked for private functions. The price is reasonable too, and i would have made it my regular hang out place if it is not that far away from my house. The only problem is that, this cafe is easily missed unless you are set to find it. Do visit them and keep their business growing. We do need more of such social entrepreneurs in Singapore who cares for those with special needs. continue reading

Started in June 2009 as a social enterprise by a couple who named the café after their daughter with special needs, the café aims to empower youths and children with special needs by providing them with employment and training, so that they can integrate well into the society where they contribute as an active member of the local community. The café's serves a simple European menu which seems to offer everything. The service staff are warm and friendly and you might just need a little bit of patience while your orders are being taken. My companion ordered their Aubergine Salad ($8.90) which came with the grilled eggplant she wanted to try. Its portion was generous, making it a perfect alternative to a main course. Our ovenbaked Garlic Mussels ($8.90) were perfumed with fragrant garlic béchamel sauce, topped with a touch of cheddar cheese.I love sea bream on my sashimi platter, but this pan grilled version here didn't disappoint.Besides the fish which was grilled to a skillful crisp on the inside, in particular I liked the pumpkin mash that not just brought vibracy to the plate, but also comfort to the palate. As night falls upon this sleepy estate, with lights dimmed to intimate brightness and soothing music playing in the air, you find a growing affiliation to this place. The next thing you know, you are going to return for more. continue reading

I went to Joan Bowen Cafe for my mum's birthday this year. My dad heard of this place from his friend, so we decided to try it out. This cafe was apparently opened with a special purpose unlike most typical cafes. All the staff working here what we call "special people" with autism. But don't be fooled by that. They do an awesome job at running this entire cafe and even preparing the food - all on their own! You'll be greeted by their warm and friendly smiles and served with the most outstanding service ever. They are simply sweet and and extremely talented, so much so it really touched my heart. We proceeded to order our meals: pan fried dory, chili crab pasta and ribeye steak.Their best-selling dish here is their Fish & Chips, which i shall try out when i return another day. But since we already made our orders, we just went ahead with it.FoodWe ordered the pan fried dory for myself and my brother. It was the most tender dory fish i have every tried and do believe that i'm not exaggerating. It really was superbly tender. The taste of the fish left an impression on my tastebuds and i swore i will be visiting them again. My mum ordered the ribeye steak, which tasted really awesome as well. It was soft, juicy and tender, and rich in flavour. It was served with mash potato that was great as a complement to the steak. Then my dad ordered the chili crab pasta. No doubt it tasted really good, but my dad being the chili king, thought it wasn't spicy enough. I thought it was just right, putting into consideration that the spiciness was perhaps tailored to suit the majority of their customers. Overall, the entire experience was one to be remembered. From the ambience to the food and service, everything never failed to put a smile on our faces. continue reading
