Lunch was at Lao Beijing @ Velocity Novena as I was craving for some Chinese food. I love the environment of Lao Beijing - very nice interior decorations with the feel of olden Chinese restaurant feel. I ordered a La Mian and some dumplings to go with. The La Mian tasted okay, not the best I have had. The dumplings however tasted good and one bite you will know they made the dumpling fresh from the skin. The skin is not too thick nor thin, just nice in my opinion. There's quite a lot of selection for the dumpling so you can order them according to your preference.

dumplings paradise

If you like jiao zi and dumplings, then I recommend the high tea buffet from lao Beijing. Their buffet is pretty unique. You tick the paper to order your dumplings then they will only serve you the plain dumpling and jiao zi. All the sauces and condiments are placed at the display counter. There is really a lot of sauces like mala, hot and sour and tomato and egg to name a few. I think the mala is really good, quite spicy but made the dumpling taste really good. but the sauce is kind of oily too. nevertheless, it is a dumpling paradise.

This place is perpetually packed, so be sure to go early or make reservations. But, at least the turnover's high and service is fast and efficient.

We had:

1) Braised Spinach Beancurd ($12) - Even with the starchy oyster-based gravy, this still felt light and healthy. The beancurd was soft and silky

2) Double-Boiled Royal Nourishing Soup of the Day ($10) aka Chicken Soup with Fish Maw - delicate, but with great depth of flavour

satisfying buffet of dim sum and dumplings
Smile 2012-06-08

i headed to lao Beijing with a couple of friends for their buffet. The price was very reasonable, probably because we went on a weekday afternoon. We had their high tea buffet. There was a variety of dumpling, jiao zi to order. When we placed our orders for the dumplings, the lady who took our order told us that we can get all the soup and sauces at the buffet line. We were rather puzzled with what she said until they served the empty steamed dumpling. So we headed to the buffet line to get various sauces for the dumplings. There was mala sauce, hot and sour soup, premium soup, egg tomato sauce. I like the mala one, it really brought out the flavor of the dumpling. It is not too spicy yet goes so well with the dumpling. The hot and sour sauce was not too bad but I found it a little not sour enough so I added some vinegar and it tasted really good.

There were other dim sum and appetizers at the buffet line. My favourite appetizer was the marinated jelly fish. I took a large portion for myself. The jelly fish was very chewy and crunchy. The marinate was really good, sweetish sourish. It really whets your appetite. The dumplings were pretty good, the skin was not too thick. The meat inside was very juice. You can just simply dip it into vinegar and eat it, it is as good. There was siew mai for the dim sum, the siew mai was so so only. It was not really large in size. They use pretty fresh meat and the siew mai was rather tasty. They was also fried spring roll, they were nice enough to place mayo for you to eat together with your fried spring roll. The spring roll was very crispy on the outside. It is pretty addictive, I ate about 5 spring rolls at one shot.

Chinese Late Buffet
Smile 2011-11-28

I was looking a place to have a late lunch with my family and suddenly we found this big advertisement board with buffet sign in front of a restaurant. So we decided to have a try since all of us did not have breakfast in the morning.

The amount of food and the variety of the food is great. So much food can be chosen from.
The place also has the good environment that brings up our appetite. The service lady in charge is very friendly with us and even spoke in dialect with my grand mother.

Look forward to the next visit very soon. (:

These 2 are fried dumpling and longan red date tea from Lao Beijing.

Their red date tea is serving free flow so i can drink as much as i can. They served it quite hot. Maybe it is a tactic to slow down the refill.

Their dumpling's filling included prawn & pork and chives. Sauce is vinegar with ginger. The taste just normal and no different from outside but the price is so much higher.

Lao Beijing chinese tea
Just OK 2011-09-29 (Related Review)

This is eight treasures Chinese tea from Lao Beijing. I was curious with their eight treasures ingredients so i decided to order and have a look.

It actually included red date, winter melon, wolfberry, chrysanthemum, dried longan, chinese herb ~~ ginseng, ophiopogon and the other ingredient that i don't know the name.

This drink is rather tasteless but i believe it is very healthy and good for our body.

I like this spicy fried french beans from Lao Beijing. Upon order, you can tell the staff the level of spiciness you prefer -- mild, moderate or extremely spicy.

After your dinner, always complete it with a dessert. As for chinese dessert, i always love to try the pan fried red bean pancakes. I just can't stop from the 1st bite. Very crunchy for the outer layer and the sweetness of red bean is just nice. Strongly recommended to all!

Lao beijing always give me an impression of high quality chinese food.

I tried their appetizer of this fried silver fish. What amazed me was the price and the portion doesn't correlate. Very small portion of fried silver fish and can be finished up by minute.

I also ordered their signature sweet and sour stir fried prawns. I like their sauce, and their prawns are fresh and crunchy. However, all dishes can't satisfy me as i'm a big eater..

Lao Beijing

It didn't meet my expectation as one of Tung Lok Group Restaurant. My family and I decided to give it a try since Lao Beijing is affiliated to Tung Lok Restaurant which is recognized for the dishes' delicacy.

We ordered the xiao long bao but they tasted like frozen meat that were just steamed upon ordering. The soup inside the xiao long bao is oily and tasted too salty.

The others were some of the a la carte dishes. They tasted ordinary and nothing special.

Really disappointed with this restaurant. More improvement is needed to keep up the name of Tung Lok Group.

Not recommended.

Lao Beijing!
Smile 2011-03-12

I was celebrating my cousin's birthday and we went to lao beijing for lunch. The lunch came up to $150 for 5 of us. Each of us had to pay $30 per head.. Eventually, my uncle offered to pay for us. So great!

I love eating the steamed juicy meat buns and special fried pancakes that were so crispy. I also love the shredded jellyfish with the chef's special spicy sauce. The sauce was tasty. It was not too spicy which is good for me as I cannot eat too hot food. This sauce made the jellyfish very appetizing. In two mouths, the plate of delicious jellyfish was gobbled up.

I really like the claypot eggplant. The eggplant was so soft and it tastes heavenly and melts in my mouth. The Baked Seafood Fried Rice served on Lotus Leaf also tastes superb. I finished the whole bowl of fried rice. The egg serving was very generous and the prawns tastes good.

It was a great time talking to waitresses who were very entertaining.

Yummy chinese food!
Just OK 2010-11-30

Lao Beijing offers both ala cart and high tea buffet. i tried their high tea buffet, was not really very impressed cos of the limited choices. however the xiao long bao was free flow! the xiao long bao i must say is quite delicious. love the soup inside the bao! yummy! they have a plenty of different dumplings cooked in different form to choose from. my fav is the shrimp, pork and chive guotie. the shrimp they use are really fresh and crunchy. the soup inside the dumpling is very tasty as well.

their zha jiang mian is also very yummy. totally fell in love with their meat sauce. not too salty yet taste just right. the noodles are handmade if i am not wrong, very QQ.

their chives and vegetable pancakes taste a little like roti prata with add chives and vegetables. but nevertheless, it taste really fragrant and delicious.

on weekdays, the buffet is cheaper than that of weekends. foodwise not much of a difference.

a great way to enjoy a lazy afternoon!

Yet Another Affordable Tim Sum Buffet
Just OK 2010-11-09

Lao Beijing is another Tung Lok's casual dining outlet. I remembered seeing looooong queues outside its plaza sing outlet when their teatime buffet was featured on TV. They do not take reservations so people will start to queue up waaaaay before the buffet starts. Years later, when the hype completely died down, we simply breezed into the restaurant at 3pm sharp. There are items at the side where we can pick or we can order xiao long bao, noodles, pan fried buns with the wait staff. A pretty good tea buffet system!

I used to like their ala carte xiaolong bao and was kind of expecting the same quality at the buffet. However, the skin seem to get thicker and thicker towards the end of the buffet tongue I still like xlb's broth, it's as yummy as ever!

Their sichuan spicy soup was flavourful and full of sourish and spicy kick! We thoroughly enjoyed the soup.

The cold beancurd skin and jelly fish was also delightfully light and delicious. Most Tung Lok outlets serves crunchy and fresh jellyfish. So cannot go wrong with that.

Finally, we round up our meal with some refeshing almond jelly. While we simply spend about an hour at Lao Beijing but we had our fill!
