Steaks for dinner

Pass by the restaurant many times but never notice its existence or never think that I will patronise it. Until one day I noted their banner outside the restaurant, it was started in the 80s. Then I would think that they could survive for so many years, they should reach certain standard.

3 of us reached the restaurant around 6pm, it was still early for the dinner crowd. We sat at the window table. Once settle down, I liked the decoration and the atmosphere, it really did look like a 80s restaurant.

We ordered lamb cutlet ($17.00++), ribeye ($18.8++) , sausage with steak ($20.5++) and ½ dozen escargot ($10.2++) to share. We didn’t top up for a full course meal, we just ordered the main dish as the portion was good enough to fill up our stomach. First serve the warm garlic baguette slices, it was nice. Follow by escargot, it really was only escargot. If it could have mashed potato together, it would be much better as the escargot contained so much melted butter. Anyway, taste wise it was ok.

Mine was ribeye steak, it didn’t disappointed me. My mom enjoyed her lamb cutlet. Sausage with steak were generous portion, it was good too. Having said that the baked potato was just ok, frankly it wasn’t the type of potato for baking.

Service crew are promptly doing their work. While we were having our food, dinner crowd started to fill in the restaurant, some of them looked like their regular customers as they chatted happily.

I would say their prices are reasonable with the portion of food serve. We will certainly revisit if we want to have steaks.

Mariners Western Delight
Smile 2013-04-29

The Food
I ordered the medium well sirloin steak with grilled lobster set which costs only $18. The steak is tender, moist and juicy and the lobster meat is fresh, delicate and mouth-watering. One good thing is by topping up $3.50, can enjoy free flow salad bar, garlic bread, soup of the day, ice cream and coffee or tea hence is very value for money!

The Ambience
The ambience is cozy with candlelight and soothing music of sentimental love songs best to go with your loved ones. I also experienced the nostalgic feeling whenever I dine in the dim lighting, surrounded by wooden walls, tinted windows, beautiful paintings and checkered table cloths.

The Service
The experienced staff are friendly and approachable and never fail to make me feel comfortable at all times.

The Price
Reasonably priced at $50++ for 2 persons hence is very worth for money.

Overall
I feel very satisfied after having a sumptuous dinner and memorable impression which no other restaurant can give hence recommended to try for all those who never try before !

Cheap and good!
Smile 2012-07-26

Good and cheap and retro, hmmm but is it close? has it moved somewhere? Ahhh it will be quite sad if its is close. This restaurant has been around for many many years. They serve cheap, good hainanese style western food. The cook and waiting staff looks like they have been working in this restaurant for many years. And many of them are hainanese. So i feel that it would be a pity if this restaurant closes down. This restaurant in itself is a heritage!

Anyway on to the food, this is the lovely T-bone steak! Nice medium rare steak at less than $20! Value for money!

Nice Dinner

Enjoy a memorable dinner with your loved one under the cozy ambience of candlelight and soothing music of sentimental love songs. Experience the nostalgic feeling when you dine in the dim lighting, surrounded by wooden walls, tinted windows, beautiful paintings and checkered table cloths. In addition, the experienced staff are friendly and approachable, and never fail to make you feel comfortable at all times.

What is even more worthwhile mentioning, is that every time upon leaving the restaurant, I feel the satisfaction of having a sumptuous dinner and a lasting impression which no other restaurant can give.

Nostalgic
Just OK 2012-01-17

Old style steak houses are slowly disappearing with time and taking with them memories of the culinary scene of yesteryear. Many such restaurants have revamped themselves to catch up with modern times, leaving but a pitiful few to keep the line. Mariners' Corner Restaurant & Steakhouse is one such restaurant which still hangs on to a part of history.

Inconspicuously located at the ground floor of Maritime House along Cantonment Road, Mariners' Corner has been around since 1984 and mainly catered to seafarers who dropped by the Singapore Mariner's Club. Decked out to look like a ship cabin, the interior exuded a sense of coziness and warm nostalgia with its carpeted floors, wooden panelings and checkered table cloths.

Mushroom Soup with Garlic Bread - The mushroom soup tasted like your straight out of the can Campbell soup, which was still quite decent while the garlic bread, though generous size wise, tasted nothing out of the ordinary.

Escargot Gastrome - Its been ages since I last ate Escargots. Used to have them on a regular basis when I was in Canada but stopped altogether when I returned to Singapore because of their prohibitively expensive prices here. Well I finally broke the duck and ordered half a dozen at $8, which is rather cheap if you ask me. The Escargots were baked with garlic and butter and came across as very fragrant and tasty with a rather strong garlic taste. Not that I'm complaining though as the garlic helps to mask the rawness of the flesh. However, having said that, I still prefer my Escargots baked with a layer of cheese on top. Just a subtle reminder, please do not expect top quality Escargots for the price though.

Ribeye Steak Combo with Skewered Prawn - Ribeye steak with prawns on a kebab. Whats not to like Plenty actually. The steak, though done up medium rare and of relatively generous portions, was a little soft and limp texture wise. The accompanying mushroom sauce was flavourful though and complemented the lightly charred taste of the steak.

While the steak was still decent, the skewered prawns were a let down. Served with mushrooms and other vegetables, the prawns were unfresh and probably a little undercooked. The only positive thing was that the restaurant actually took the effort to remove the innards of the prawns before grilling it.

Grilled Lobster with Boneless Chicken Fillet - I was shocked by the size of the lobster when this dish came into view. It was huge, at least for the price. Having said that, the amount of meat that came with the lobster was pathetic, weighing in no more than 2 mouthfuls. On top of that, the meat was a little too dry and tough. The chicken fared a little better, with the meat nicely marinated with garlic and pepper, giving it a nice pepperish taste. With the accompanying mushroom sauce, it actually tasted quite decent.

Dinner for 2 in a relaxing environment with excellent service cost >$60, which isn't too much to pay considering we had steak, lobsters, escargots and other stuff like free flow salad, dessert, soft drinks and soup which came with the set meal. Sure, this isn't the best place to enjoy a good quality dinner, not even close. But it makes you feel right at home and prices are considerably cheap for what you get. So if you do go, lower your expectations, kick back and relax.

Not meeting my expectation
Just OK 2011-06-24

The restaurant had been there for years and it was my family's 1st time there for sis-in-law's birthday. My sis-in-law had been there before and recommended us over as she had tried big oysters there then. However we didn't get to have as big oysters as she had previously. Meaning - standard dropped. sad

Frankly speaking, I will not be back for the food, as the oysters were not great, the steak was also not as good as Jack's place's. Hence I rather go to Jack's place's to have steak. The calamari we ordered was good.

I would only go back if it is for the ambience and if I had no better steak options at that area.

My first visit. They have a salad bar. I took all the greenies, corn, tomato, carrots and bread crumps. Oh i love the bread cubes. All drown in thousand island sauce. Fabulous! My main dish is sirloin steak which is medium rare. Don't like it to be too hard. It's pretty delicious, not too hard nor too bloody topped with cheesy prawns. It's fresh and succulent. Will be back for more =)
