Love, Love Marutama!

Out of the many MANY specialized ramen restaurants in Singapore but one of the few who serve chicken broth ramen. And it is OH SO GOOD!

The menu has but a few other items aside from the 3 different types of ramen dishes, but what they lack in variety they make up for in mastery of the dishes.

The ramen comes with a slice of pork, some spring onion and seaweed but I usually add on an egg and a serving a spring onions. The egg is always perfectly cooked, with firm whites and a runny yolk. The pork itself is tender and melts in your mouth and I always see lots of people order an additional serving of it.

My hubby loves adding lemon (which you can order) to the broth. You’ll be surprised at the difference in taste, light and zingy! smile

Do try the grilled pork slices side dish. Each slice is grilled to perfection, with a fragrance you can taste.

Chicken Ramen
Smile 2013-02-19
The Food
Marutama's speciality is the thin japanese noodle used in their Ramen and bsacially there are 4 soup bases which are chicken, spicy chicken, prawn or nuts. I ordered the Marutama Ramen with chicken soup base as is different from the rest of the Ramen outlets which use pork bone broth. Even though the noodles are thin, it give me the tenderness texture and springy feeling and I like the chicken broth which is cooked for 15 hours hence very flavourful with little MSG.
The char siew is tender and flavourful and feel like eating wagyu beef.

The Service
The waitress who take down my orders is friendly with a smile and ramen is served promptly

The Ambience
The place was cosy & comfortable

The Price
Reasonably priced at $12 per bowl

Overall
I will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this!

Fragrant ramen broth

 Menu

This ramen shop has the smallest menu variety but There is a reason why people go back because they are good at what they do!

Spicy Nama Karashi Ramen( Tamago), $12 & Gyoza, $5

I drank so much of the delicious, creamy, fragrant soup that I couldn’t finish my ramen! tongue
I have not yet come across any ramen that has this kind of broth! The soup seems to contain A LOT of essence, as if 10kg of meat & bones were used to cook a bowl. It was glistening! The ramen noodles itself, were very normal though.

Decent Ramen
Just OK 2012-11-06
Nothing special, but decent food at a pretty reasonable price. Good for getting a quick Ramen Fix! Chicken broth was tasty and thin ramen noodles were interesting to try out. Dumplings were quite average and so were the chicken balls. Service was good and servers were quick to respond to any requests. Will return when we are in the Clark Quay area to get our Ramen fix!

Ramen
Smile 2012-07-28
Marutama Japanese Restaurant has one of the best ramen soup in town. Really love their soup base as it is very light, tasty and also quite authentic. I can't help but to always complete my bowl of ramen and soup with nothing left over at all. The ramen is very chewy and the thinly sliced pork bellies are very fragrant and tender too. The generous amount of vegetables added in it make this bowl of ramen taste very healthy as well.

Chicken broth, Toripaitan soup Ramen
Smile 2012-06-11

Most ramen used pork bone broth but at Marutama it is famed for its chicken broth, Toripaitan soup. Actually I have started to have a liking for chicken broth based soup because it does not leave me with oily lips.

Marutama Ramen ($12) uses homemade Hakata-styled ramen noodle which is hard and thin. I liked the tenderness texture of the noodle. The greens also gave the bowl of ramen extra sweetness and texture. By the way, the bowl of ramen only came with only a piece of char siew and I have to pay an additional $1.50 for the Ajituke Tamago (Half boiled seasoned egg).

If you are not content with just a bowl of ramen, try the Yaki Char Siu ($6). The grilled roast pork is flavourfully seasoned and had a lovely smokey aroma that melted in the mouth.

Ramen
Smile 2012-06-11
Just beside the walkway of The Central, this specific ramen restaurant surprised me with delicious handmade ramen. Atmosphere was great during a weekday night. Ordered the famous Marutama Ra-men (Chashu) + 2 tamago. The texture of the noodles is very smooth and QQ. There is this tenderness feeling, which is different from other ramen i had outside. And the tamago is the best i ever had. Really one of the best ramen you will ever find in singapore. MUST TRY. tongue

Marutama Ra-men
Smile 2012-06-09
The queue is forever snake long during peak hours! We waited for quite a bit and had the counter table. I really love their eggs! On the whole it looked just like normal hard boiled egg but when you sink your teeth into it, it's havenly! The inside are soft and fragrant. I also ordered raddish soup. It was pretty tastless but after more sips, i start to taste the sweetness of the raddish. It is pretty down to earth kinda soup. No craving for anymore soup on the next visit though.

Crayfish Ramen Soup
Smile 2012-05-08
The crayfish here is really big and fresh, which are cooked at the right texture. The ramen is handmade and you can taste that every strips of it are very chewy and smooth. The soup base is very sweet and thick, which the milk added to it has make this soup quite creamy and with the slight sweetness from the milk as well. The portion is quite alright eventhough it is served in a over sized big bowl. Do add in some of their dry chilli paste in the soup as well which can really enhance the flavour of the soup and at the same time make it really spicy and delicious too!

One of the nicest ramen that i had
Smile 2012-01-21
i love their ramen! lol
Although their menu has only four types of ramen, i believe that quality superceeds quantity tongue
I had the char siu ramen with my friend and also had the super nice tamago (hardboil egg with the soft watery kind of york).
i love those kind of egg, super nice!
Another plus point is that the restaurant places a jug of ice water on each table for you to refill, which i find far better than some places where you keep having to find the waiters to refill water.
Sometimes i hate when they are super busy and can't attend to you, or u informed them and they forgot about it as they are super busy and overloaded.
Best of all, each person spends less than $15, includes the ramen, egg, gst and svc charge! smile

Lots of MSG
Smile 2012-01-18
Marutama's interior is quite small and can be rather uncomfortable at times due to the close proximity of the tables as well as the lack of open spaces. Seating capacity should hover around 30 pax or so and the decor is kept clean and simple. If you so happen to get a table with a window, you are in for a stressful session as the only thing that seperates you from the queuing customers outside is the window. Imagine people peering at you and your food. Not a nice feeling if you ask me.

Aka Ramen - Seven kinds of nuts soup base Ramen with Coriander - This soup base was supposedly of a limited nature aka while stocks last. It was a little spicy and tasted very strongly of coriander. Honestly, I couldn't make out the taste of any of the seven nuts and it was really salty, not to mention "sweet" from all the MSG in it. It was quite bad really. I had to down glass after glass of water just to get rid of the MSG induced thirst. That aside, the noodles were quite springy, but tasted rather flat. From what I understand, the soup base is supposed to be flavourful to make up for the flat ramen, but its really like two extremes coming together but not exactly jelling well.

I had added on a side of Char Siew and it was simply fabulous. The fatty portions of the Char Siew literally melted in my mouth and the meat was tender and flavourful. I've honestly never tasted Char Siew like that. The only bummer was the not too generous servings. Please note that it is not your usual Char Siew that you can buy from the marketplace. In case you are wondering what are those balls in the picture, its some kind of a meat ball with a weird taste to it. Nothing fancy or impressive though.

Marutama Ramen - Chicken Base Soup Ramen - This soup base came across as slightly heavier and tasted rather common. As with the Aka Ramen base, it was heavy on the MSG and way too salty. The additional side of pork belly was good though. Quiveringly tender, it dissolved ever so readily in my mouth. This is definitely as good as the Char Siew.

Considering that it was only 2 bowls of ramen with an additional 2 sides, >$50 is heck of a lot to pay. The noodles and soup base were not to our liking, but the Char Siew and pork belly could prove to the biggest draw. Having said that, I don't think I'll be back in a hurry, especially with the mad queues.

Basketball Ramen
Smile 2011-12-22
I love Marutama’s ramen. I went all the way to Clarke quay just to eat this. It was the best ramen I even had. The soup is very very meaty and flavourful. I highly recommend getting the egg too. However, I don’t really think people should eat too much of the egg. The shop is quite nice too. It makes you feel like you are really in a Japanese store eating ramen. The logo looks like a basketball which makes it easy to remember.

Marutama ramen ($12) which featured thin noodles with chicken broth, thin slice of pork and veges or seaweed. The broth wasa tad too salty but the piece of meat was real tender and well marinated! I even orderd a side dish, ajitsuke tamago at only 1 buck! Love the marinated egg with semi liquid yolk!

Slurpy yummy ramen
Smile 2011-12-08

Having a meal in Marutama feels like I'm in Japan. I like the simple interior deco, and some of the waiters are actually Japanese too.

Different from other ramen shop, the ramen here is served in chicken soup based. You can choose your own topping too. We ordered a Marutama Ra-men ($12) with Kakuni topping ($5), which is actually the pork bellies stewed in special sauce. Yummy.

   Marutama Ramen

My favourite is Aka Ra-men ($15), this ramen is served in the mild spicy chicken soup with 7 kinds of ground nuts mixture. Very tasty!

   Aka Ramen

Char siu rice ($5) is yummy too, the braised pork is so well-marinated, so tender and goes really well with rice.

   Cha Siu Gohan

We also order gyoza, and to our surprise, the gyoza here is not pan-fried but steamed! Taste quite like the chinese dumpling though. Not bad.

Vegetable Ramen
Smile 2011-10-14

   Vegetable Ramen

Have been to this outlet countless times. Have always eaten their Char Siew ramen so this time round, I decided to go for the greens. Good portion of tangy ramen. The soup base is yummy. People who knows me know that I love spicy stuffs (whether I can take it or not is another story). So I guess I probably changed the taste a little by adding too much chili powder. So it became spicy vegetable ramen. For those who have not tried them, I would suggest you go for the original soup base first before adding stuffs to change the taste yourself.
