I spent 3 years living in the Ghim Moh area, and this is where I would always take visitors to try the famous Singapore chili crab. It's more of an authentic Singapore vibe than going to Newton, and the prices are pretty reasonable. Plus the restaurant is always busy, so it must be good, right?Anyway, Master Crab is your average cze char place - noisy, plastic tables and chairs, completely indifferent service. That said, the crab is always satisfying and the chili sauce has a rich, satisfying flavor. You can even see them in their tanks. The walls are also lined with the shells of eaten crabs and some have messages on them. The other dishes I've tried were just average though... That said, if you stick to a chili crab, some fried rice, and a veggie dish like kailan with garlic it's a pretty good meal for around $50. Just don't have high expectations of the setting or the service. The waitress will bring you the menu, take your order, and bring the food. If you want another drink or to get the bill you're going to have to wave to get their attention. continue reading

Master Crab Seafood Restaurant is located near Ghim Moh market, further down from 7 Eleven. It specializes in crab dishes, however, as they go by the kg and price is not stated in the menu, be very careful to ask about the cost before ordering or you could end up footing a humongous bill.It was an unpleasant experience eating here. The service was terrible. Every single server who came to take the order/ serve the dishes wore a pissed off expression. When we asked what vegetables were available, the waitress sighed and gave us a long suffering look. When we asked for chopsticks we were told we already had fork and spoons. When we asked for an extra bowl of rice, we were given dirty looks. When we asked for the bill, we waited so long we had to go to the counter and pay ourselves. Another patron nearby was asked to sit near the rain because they only had 4 people thus were not allowed to sit inside where the tables were bigger. At the end of the dinner we were all so upset. We ordered a fried fish which cost $16 and was only nice when it was hot. By mid meal the fishy taste was overpowering. Also there were very few pieces of fish.We also ordered the thai sauce chicken which liked. It was crispy and had very little fat. HOwever the sauve was a bit too sweet for my liking. The vegetables were hard and the beancurd tasteless though.Overall i would not reccommend this restaurant to anybody. continue reading

Together with Mr. Ian Ong and Mr. Tan Tiang Chai Frederick, we went there first time because it was nearby their house. We spent about $120 for the food.Another staff came to take order because we want to know the market price before placing an order. We order 2 crabs (This is a must try dish although each crab is $40) with other dishes as follows:- Steamed red garoupa: the fish is so fresh and taste really good, Mr. Frederick Tan loves it so much!- The Scallop Asparagus ($15) was nothing like the menu's photo, it only had a few tiny scallops. For that kind of price, I would rather order two different vegetable dishes. The crabs are picked live from those huge styrofoam boxes and brought straight into the kitchen - unlike some places (which shall remain unnamed) where the crabs are picked outside, yes, but somehow crabs of a different size & grade emerge from the kitchen and I shall say it again: crab prices are getting ridiculous in zi char restaurants.Overall, I am impressed with the freshness of all the food especially its seafood. Nice taste and I think the chef did a great job too! Conclusion: Not bad for a first try. Pretty good food that was served promptly, service was not bad too! continue reading
