different kind of chinese food

When I first saw the side dish on the table at Mayim Chinese Cuisine, I literally thought it was kimchi. It left me pretty confused cos I thought it was a chinese restaurant and they served kimchi as their side. However when I took a piece to try, I realized it was not kimchi. It was another form of pickled chinese cabbage. The cabbage tasted sour but the sauce they marinate it with was salty. the portion was quite long for a side dish so we did not order any vegetables side. We tried their chilli oil wanton thinking it would taste the same as those of din tai fung and crystal jade. However to our surprise, the sauce for the wanton is black sweet sauce. It was so unique. The wanton is large and juicy and very meaty. It actually went well with the sweet sauce.

MAYIM RAMEN
Smile 2013-01-20
Mayim serves a wide range of chinese delicies from ramen to dimsum. The dim sum is freshly made and juicy. it is cheaper compared to others. i highly recommend this place as it is clean and the service is good. They provide you with a basket to put your bag under your seats, rarely do you find restaurant which provides such services. I think it's pretty thoughtful! Food wise..... Price is reasonable and cheaper than other chinese restaurant such as Ding Tai fung, Dian xiao er and more.

However, might need to queue for awhile during peak hours especially weekdays. The wait will not be too long, about 15 - 20 minutes. If you don't wish to wait, you can make a call for reservation. They do accept reservation. Great place!

When you go to Mayim Chinese Cuisine, do try their Xiao Long Bao. One thing i like about this restaurant is that they allow you to order the number of xiao long bao you want, of course they have a minimum among of three pieces. unlike other places where the quantity is pre decided and may not be enough to go around. mayim allow you to order as many as you like and their xiao long bao is placed in cookie casing. i think to prevent the soup from seeping out should your xiao long bao skin breaks. you still can drink up the soup from the casing. their xiao long bao skin is not too thick, the meat inside is very fresh and the soup is very tasty not too salty. on top of my 4 pieces of xiao long bao, i also ordered their roast duck noodles as well. it was realy good too.

different hot and sour soup
Smile 2012-12-18

Mayim really serves very unique Chinese Cuisine. Although the food has the same name as those of Din Tai Fung or Crystal Jade, but the way they cooked it is very different. I ordered their Dumpling in Hot and Sour Soup ($5.80) and a bowl of rice (80 cents) as my dinner. I thought their hot and sour soup will be the thick kind with like toufu and mushroom but when they served it to me, it was very thin, and no toufu. in fact there was tang hoon inside with tau pok. The soup was indeed sourish and spicy. The dumpling is very juicy, it itself have its own flavouring. This goes absolutely well with rice, I was very satisfied.

delicious noodles

Dinner at Mayim Chinese Cuisine for me. I could not decide what to order so I settled for their signature Roasted Chicken Noodles Dry ($8.50). They also have the soup version but I prefer dry and it cost slightly more than the soup version. They have various types of noodles, Hong Kong Noodles and La Mian. My noodles was under the Hong Kong noodles section. The chicken is roasted really well, the meat is not dry at all, in fact it is juicy and tender. The sauce they add to the noodles is really tasty, not too salty. The noodles is very fine, it is also very crunchy, means it is not overcooked. it is served together with a bowl of soup. the soup is very tasty, it makes the meal complete.

   Best!

bowl Its been long since I last ate Guo Tie. Sorry I do not know exactly how to spell it in English. The price is actually a bit high and it only have a few of them as you can see in the pic. It is served with soy sauce and it is quite bigger than the normal size. mad It smells great and it tastes better!! It has all the nice taste in it and the skin is quite crispy yet it isn't too hardy. Overall, i think you should try this. smile

Good!
Smile 2012-07-26
Decided to skip to Mayim at Westmall for a delicious lunch. It is good food at good price. We shared the zha jiang mian, the chef was pretty generous with the mince pork, quite a lovely bowl of noodles. I love handmade noodles. Despite trying to stay away from carbo, handmade noodles like this is irresistible.

Beancurd skin. Fu Pi Juan

This is my very healthy bowl of multi-grained rice. The texture was good and taste was lovely and comforting.

Pretty normal plate of chicken feet.

My favourite dish was the multi grained rice!

Mayim - The Dim Sum Rendezvous!
Smile 2012-06-05
Dim Sum is a Chinese cuisine that is close to my heart. Back when I was no more than a metre tall, my late grandfather would bring the whole family along to savour scrumptious Dim Sum at restaurants. The good ol’ days you say. What I like about Dim Sum is that each dish is so full of flavour and they are served in bite-sized portions that is really manageable and not boring. The perfect meal at tea time. We seldom hear of good Dim Sum restaurants in the heartlands but I am fortunate to know one, which I am going to share with you.

It is really interesting at Mayim because you use odd shaped plates rather than the usual China associated with Dim Sum.

I have to admit that the Siew Mai ($2.40) and Ha Kao ($2.60) are the default dishes that we would order for any Dim Sum meal. The reason being, they are simply delicious. The outer skin of the Ha Kao or shrimp dumpling was not sticky and did not tear easily. This ensured that there was enough moisture in each dumpling to offer that heavenly taste. On top of that, the prawn was fresh and crunchy.

Mayim’s version of Siew Mai or pork dumpling had Chinese mushrooms thrown into the mixture. Each treat was tender and soft, not forgetting the inviting aroma from the mushrooms and well seasoned pork.

Traditional Char Siew Baos ($2.40) are always a crowd favourite. This one here was no different. The hand-made buns were fluffy and sweet. The delightful Char Siew filling inside threatened to ooze out with each bite!

Steamed Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp ($4.00) was accompanied with a special soy sauce that was uniquely sweet. The vermicelli roll was smooth glided down your throat with ease.

Of all the dishes, we found Pan Friend Turnip Cake with Chinese Sausage and Dried Shrimp ($1.00) just passable. Nothing special to rave about. In fact, it was rather dry.

My late grandfather loved this desert so naturally I am a fan of it. Mini Red Bean Paste Pancake with Banana ($4.50) was a savoury treat. Not only was it crispy, the red bean paste was also warm and moist. A perfect dessert to end your meal with.

E and I have been to Mayim countless of times and we are very sure this will not be our last. That’s how high we rate them!

Mayim
Just OK 2012-04-30
Mayim is the most popular restaurant at West Mall. It always has the longest queue during lunch or dinner time. I always love the food at Mayim.

My sister has bought 猪脚醋 home after she had lunch with friends over there. Well, I dont really like to eat this 猪脚醋 so this dish is really not to my liking. Think i dont really know how to appreciate that. The taste is too overwhelming, and the vinegar taste is too strong that i can handle.

Wish that my sister has bought other dishes other than this 猪脚醋!

1st Visit to Mayim
Just OK 2012-04-12
It was my first visit to Mayim, and I certainly would go back again. As to why, you'll find out below. smile

Had met-up with my classmate and as she was craving for dim sum, she recommended going to Mayim, saying it was nice and the price was reasonable. When we reached, there was a short queue but it was our turn very quickly. We got a side table and I saw that the plate was really cute! The menu was full of delights, SO MANY CHOICES TO CHOOSE FROM! I had to think for a good 10minutes on what I wanted to order bcos I felt like ordering all the items, the photos simply made them look too appetizing. After a long while, I finally decided on a plate of dried noodles with roasted duck, and my friend ordered some dim sum for us to share. I also ordered a Milk Tea to go along with my meal. The dishes were served really fast. smile

Duck Noodles
The noodles is worth the money. Noodles were springy, and the roast duck was not too hard. The sauce to stir in the noodles was flavourful too. Only thing was the veg was too little for me. mad

Dim Sum
The xiao long bao was really juicy, the juice just burst into your mouth, full of flavours. A tad too salty though. Ingredients used were fresh. smile
The bacon and spring onion pastry was really dry, and pastry was too thick. Too much spring onion and too little bacon. I didnt really like this, so only ate about 3 mouths.
The prawn dumpling was my favourite. Although the skin used was abit thick, The prawn was juicy. Piping hot when I ate it, burnt my tongue. tongue
Lastly, there's bbq chicken bun, but I felt abit 'cheated' by the name of it, as it was char siew inside. Same thing as the other dim sum, the skin was too thick, very little fillings.

Milk Tea
The taste was not wat I expected. It had a more 'tea' taste, while I was used to the 'more milky' taste. I didnt like it during the 1st few gulps I took, but slowly it bcame nicer to drink. Haha, so in the end, I drank it all up. smile

Overall, although the dim sum wasnt that nice, the price was considered low as compared to other places which have dim sum. Their main was nice, and there's so many choices of food you can choose to eat. Thus, the next time I go, I will try their other dishes available. smile

One thing to note: They serve pickled veg once you sit at a table, and for that, it cost each person 50cents, and another 30cents per person for wet tissue. I didnt really like this as it all adds up in the bill, and these arent necessary. Thus, if you don't want them, you'll have to tell the waitress in advance. smile

chicken noodle
Just OK 2012-03-25
first time been to this place and when i looked at the menu, i felt this place served dishes that were slightly different from the normal chinese restaurants. i ordered the chicken noodle to try since other dishes that i wanted were not available. the presentation of the food really did not look appetising and the taste was equally not fantastic. it just tasted very average and the think for that quality, is not worth the price

   Nice Pork Dish

A Fine neighbourhood shopping centre dinner place. I bought my dad & mum there. they liked the pork belly alot. tender and juicy.

The menu reminds me of crystal jade la mian or similar set ups, but this kind of menu is I think what most people dont mind, which is good. Settings are cosy with some booth seats available.

However, it is abit noisy. i think i am shouting in order for my mum to hear me.

Good value for money..smile

Pork Wonton
Smile 2012-03-04 (Related Review)

Mayim has a relatively wide range of appetiser and the pork and vegetable wonton is one of them. It is served with the restaurant's sweet and spicy sauce and costs $5. The wontons are filled generously with moist soft pork which is wrapped with a thin layer of the skin. The skin has a light sweetness to it and the way the wonton was wrapped helps retain the sauce on its skin. The sweet and spicy sauce, as the name suggests, is sweet and spicy. However, it isn't too spicy and carries the special taste that's in most of the sauces Mayim makes. The only downside to the appetiser was the amount of oil in the sauce. It was too oily and I had to "drain" it out. Other than the oiliness, it was delicious and worth the money. Would definitely have it again next time I'm craving for wontons!

Custard & Peanut Bun
Smile 2012-02-12

I dine at Mayim regularly and the manager had actually recommended me the baked custard and peanut sauce bun today. I've never tried it before and it seems like this is one of the items on the "customers' favourite" menu.

It was served freshly out of the oven and had a nice peanut smell to it. The outer layer of the baked bun is very thin and crispy. I loved the peanut sauce on the top layer. The crust is very soft and powdery. While it looked like it'd be very dry b/c of the peanut, it was actually relatively moist. The inner layer of the bun is baked custard which was very sweet.

Overall, I really liked it and would be having it again soon. The minimum order for this baked bun is 2 pieces and each piece costs only $1.40. Its pretty big and filling so it'd be a good idea to share one order with someone else.
