Mr obanyaki at ngee Ann city is where I always frequent to get my fix of Japanese pancakes. I usually get the fish shape ones cause they are so adorable! The best flavour is still the regular red bean even though I also like the sweet and rich chocolate flavours the pancake here is light unlike other places which can be too dense. This means you don't feel too full from eating them!

pancake
Smile 2013-05-05

I love the Japanese pancakes here, I always get the red bean filled fish shaped ones which are best when they are freshly made. When fresh from the pan there is a crisp outer coating encasing a light batter which was airy and fluffy. The pancake is generously filled with lots of red bean paste which is absolutely delicious. On top of that its quite reasonably priced at only $1.40

Japanese pancake
Smile 2013-05-02

This is my all times favourite snack. Whenever I want to have something to bit on the street, I will definitely choose this Japanese pancake in fish form with either red bean or cheese filling.

There are numbers of places selling it, few of them I have tried. At the end of the day, I would prefer medium thick pancake with generous filling, it has a balance texture. Whereas there was a stall emphasised thin pancake with overflow filling, at first I thought it was a good buy. I was so eager to try it then I didn’t like it, filling was too much, I felt like I was eating the filling only.

This stall is always my choice.

great taiyaki
Smile 2012-10-02

love the taiyaki here. quite firm pastry. holds the filling well. the filling is red bean original, which had some whole beans, which is good. reasonable pricing at around $2.50. they only start cooking when they open the store, so you have to wait about an hour before you can get one of these in your hand. best eaten hot. it held up to steam very well and did not go soggy.

very good taiyaki
Smile 2012-09-09

the latest taiyaki stall in singapore. it's very very good. highly recommended! the filling is fresh and hot and just the right texture. a bit too sweet. the pancake dough part is very springy and fragrant. the density and texture is perfect! there are other flavours to choose from but i love the red bean ones. sometimes you have to wait a long time as they only start heating up the plates when they open the stall. don't remember exact price - between $1.50 to $2.50.

A good try!

For a full story and more pictures, please visit:
http://www.epinosh.com/2012/07/mr-obanyaki-singapore.html

In existence for quite a while, Mr. Obanyaki has been anchoring at the basement of Takashimaya shopping mall as early as 2008. If the name doesn't ring a bell, perhaps "車輪餅" in Mandarin or "Pancake" (think of Mr. Bean's pancake) or "Imagawayaki" (thick round version)/ "Taiyaki" (fish shaped), the way the Japanese named it.

I get to choose over a few fillings; Blueberry Cheese, Chocolate Cheese, Kaya Cheese or merely red beans. And if you know me well, I can be somewhat adventurous when it comes to trying out new flavour plus I am quite a sucker for things that are rare or are made limited. This time, the small cupboard says "limited edition / New opening specials" (new openings - I figured that it has been renovated) for Azuki bean in Green Tea & Mixed dry fruits with Banana - I know I had to have.

Azuki (Red Beans) in Green Tea batter cake - you can't go wrong with the combination, seriously. For those who dislikes the bitterness in green tea, this didn't taste the slightest bit. Instead, it has a faint green tea aroma in each bite. The cake was soft and moist. It balanced up the overly sweetened azuki beans fillings, I am glad.

Limited edition's Mixed fruits with Banana version had been inferior by an inch. I should have scrutinised the display to see what kind of fruit mix they were talking about - yes, you probably have guessed it; those cherries, citrus peel, sultanas mosaic (commonly seen here - Silver Bird brand)! The batter cake had the same texture as the green tea's, of course minus the tea fragrance. Though the candied dried mix fruits were plain ordinary, the fresh banana stuffing did a good job; allowing the cake to taste starchier with that additional moisture. Unfortunately, I didn't quite like the candied mosaic.

Still, these 2 Imagawayaki did ease my mid-day hunger pangs.

Red bean pancake
Just OK 2012-07-07

Decided to buy a red bean pancake as a snack.
Firstly, this stall offers two different shapes of pancake which include the traditional normal circle and the fish shape. A wide variety of flavours is also available for the customers to choose from ranging from cheese, red bean, chocolate and many more. As for the taste wise, the pancake itself is a bit bland. But it has a soft and spongy texture and a nice golden brown colour. Generous amount of the red bean fillings is added to the pancake. The red bean fillings has a soft and smooth texture, sweetness is acceptable, not too sweet. Overall, just a normal pancake and the price is also reasonable.

dori yaki
Just OK 2012-06-29

Decided to try this dori yaki at food basement of takashimaya
I asked the staff to recommend something which is less sweet & they asked me to take the cheese one, claiming that its really tasty. My dori yaki wasnt warmed. flour is thick and filling is little, the cheese tastes alright, something like the ones in Mr Bean or Jollibean pancakes. Overall its disappointing, nothing special & not something that I would want to eat again. too floury..the fish looks cute though

RedBean Fish Pancake
Just OK 2012-04-29

As you can see from the title above, I will be reviewing 'RedBean Fish Pancake'. Ytd my family and I went down to Orchard early to attend my Cousin Wedding. As I am quite early, they decided to go to Takashimaya to search for light food. There quite many different foods in Basement.

I've ordered Redbean Fish Pancake while my brother ordered the cheese one. They are very generous in giving alot of redbean but I dont really like the pancake. Overall it was crispy lol

Most importantly, their staff are friendly and approachable toolol

Say Cheese?
Smile 2011-11-01

As long as I can remember, I have always had thsi pancake when I am at Takashimaya. I would always order the cheese flavoured pancake.

I think that throughout the years, the taste of the pancakes have dropped, they still remain the best pancake I have eaten. Now, the cheese filling is not as much. The taste of the cheese is also not that strong anymore. However, the pancake is still as soft and spongy as before. They taste the best when they are still hot.

Fish pancake
Smile 2011-09-27

Despite trying many different kinds of pancake from different stores, I find Mr. Obanyaki pancake is the BEST! It is a pancake with lots of fillings and does not cheat you. The normal typical chocolate pancake uses chocolate rice as the filling, which just taste sweet and do not have much chocolate taste. While for Mr. Obanyaki pancakes, they use chocolate chips instead, thus the chocolate taste is rather distinct and not too sweet. Also for the pancake, it is nice and spongy. It's a must try!!!

'Hook' on this fish
Smile 2011-08-23

Whenever I'm around Takashimaya, I will not fail to go and get a piece of the pancake in the shape of a fish from this stall and I will have the original flavour which is the red bean. I have tried it elsewhere but still find this stall is better. This is just one of the snack that I have been eating it when Yaohan first introduced it. Just simply love the smell of the pancake batter and feel contended after consuming it especially while they are hot. It is selling at $1.40 per piece.

take a quick snap before consuming it
