A humble looking Japanese restaurant from the outside, Nanbantei is well known for their yakitori and as a fan of that, I decided to check it out and see how good it is. It was after peak hour when I visited this place and thus it was quite empty except for a few other diners. There's a big BBQ section right in the middle of the place, the chef show casing how they "bbq" the yakitori. You might smell of bbq after the meal since the section is just like right infront of it. Ordered the yakitori bento, consist of enough meat and rice to last me to dinner. Prefer the rice to be stickier though. Meat is grill nicely but a bit too dry for the pork. Overall, I don't know if my expectation is too high for yakitori but I feel it is an average restaurant for me though..

Nice Japanese Bento
Smile 2013-04-30

Went for a department lunch at Nanbantei with colleagues. The place was quite cramped and small, but is nicely furnished.

Ordered the yakitori bento set, the food is pretty nice and the price is reasonable considering that it is a restaurant in Orchard area. Opinions from colleagues who tried other bentos were good as well.

Will definitely go back again with my family.

yakitori
Smile 2013-04-10

Visited Nanbantei @ Far East for our team lunch. since it is my first time visiting to this place, I decided to play safe and order their yakitori set bento lunch (consist of 2 pork, 2 chicken, 1 quail egg, rice, mushroom and seaweed) Their yakitori is cook nicely, just that I thought it will be better if there's more yakitori sauce on the meat and rice. Also order the salmon nabe hot pot to share. I love the taste of the soup - it was so flavorful with the taste of salmon meat. Also ordered the grilled squid, quite overpriced though it was enough to share among 4-5 people.

the place is quite small and crampy so if you are going there in a big group, reservation is high recommended.

Set Lunches
Smile 2012-12-13

Went there with some of my colleagues during lunch to check out this Japanese place. Heard that they serve really good teppanyaki.

Sashimi set lunch.

Yakitori set lunch bento.

Salmon set lunch. The salmon was not overly done, and soaked with omega 3 fatty oils. Yums.

At the centre of the restaurant is dominated by a teppanyaki live demonstration booth dotted with individual seats around it.

The three of us spent around $60 over in total.

Yakitori Lunch!
Smile 2012-11-30

If you ever venture up to the 5th floor of Far East Plaza, you definitely can't miss this place. It's located right in front of the escalator and has a brown brick exterior with "Yakitori" pasted all over the shop front. And although we've passed by this restaurant many times, it was my first time trying it out.

   Yakitori Set

I ordered the Yakitori set which is one of their menu items that's "Chef Recommended". The grill that they use to make the yakitori is situated right in the middle of the restaurant so that everyone has a good view of the chef grilling the meats. The good thing is that their ventilation system seems good enough that the smoke from the grill doesn't fill up the restaurant.

The Yakitori Set (around $15 with GST) I ordered definitely lives up to its name. The meat was cooked just nice and the sesame sauce that came with was a great match! They even had grilled quail eggs in the set - although the eggs were a bit over cooked and their texture was a bit tougher that how I would usually like my eggs.

I'll definitely come back here again if I get the chance too! Their other dishes sure look just as appetizing.

Nanbantei is one of the oldest Japanese Restaurant in Singapore,
The environment there is very nice and the waitress are really kind.
Can see that lots of office worker will go there during the peak hour.
This Salmon Shioyaki Set costs $11.50.
It consists of grilled salted salmon, white rice, cold tofu and fruits.
So it is quite worth,
The salmon is a little bit overcooked so the skin is crispy,it is quite fresh and i like to add the lemon on it.

Located on the 5th floor of Far East Plaza is a small Japanese restaurant that serves one of the best Yakitori. I was introduced to the restaurant by a friend a few years back. I usually order one of the bento set that came with 5 different types of Yakitori. Even the rice were served with 3 different toppings (seaweed, mushroom and pork floss). The bento set is really value for money and nice.

Nanbantei, Japanese restaurant located at the last level of Far East Plaza. I had their Yakitori Bento at $13.00. Real affordable and with a lot of varieties. The look of it is already attractive enough to gain your attention! The food are all piping hot like it was served directly after grilled. The ambience is homey and cosy. Service was great too. Avoid peak hours as it will be packed. Do make a reservation!

Nanbantei is always popular with their yakitori. Went to Nanbantei on last week with my friends, and we ordered the bento sets.

Set 1: Yakitori bento ($13.00) consists of 5 yakitori, rice covered with seaweed, mushrooms and a miso soup. The yakitori is really amazing!

Set 2: Yakitori bento ($14.00) consists of yakitori over rice, udon noodle, cold tofu and fruits. It is really worth the price as it is really a big portion.

Set 3: Salmon Shioyaki Set ($11.50) consists of grilled salted salmon, white rice, cold tofu and fruits. The salmon is a little bit overcooked, but overall is delicious and definitely worth the price.

Nanbantei, one of the oldest Japanese Restaurant in Singapore, located at the top floor of Far East Plaza. Didn't know about this place until my friend brought me here. We enjoy the cozy environment here and also the warm service. It was very busy when we were there during weekend, so better make a reservation if you are going there during peak hour.

Well, you would definitely dont want to miss the bento set here, they are just delicious and value the price. Irresistible taste mad The grilled food too, just somehow looked so tempting. It is served immediately after it is done. So can u just imagine the taste and feeling you going to have????lol I would had ordered more if I wasn't so full that time. and I will DEFINITELY VISIT NANBANTEI AGAINNNNN.lol

Not impressed
Just OK 2012-01-14

Had been meaning to try out Nanbantei and the chance presented itself one evening when I happened to be at Orchard with my gf. Located on the 5th floor of the hip Far East Plaza, Nanbantei, which specialises in Yakitori, has garnered many accolades and rave reviews including that of Tatler's Singapore's Best Restaurant.

The interior of Nanbantei is rather tiny and cramp and the bulk of the seating comes in the form of counter seats (there are a few tables that can accomodate 4 though), which offer a live view of the chef grilling your orders. When I say cramp, it means almost shoulder to shoulder with the person beside you at the counter, which is really disconcerting to say the least.

The scallop was quite a size and came very well seasoned and grilled. A nice smokey taste lingered, complementing the fibrous texture of the scallop. I did find the salt a little too heavy though.

Asparagus Maki & Nikuzume Shiitake - If I may say, the asparagus maki was nothing short of excellent. It really surpassed all expectations. Soft asparagus covered with a layer of pork grilled till crisp and a sprinkling of salt for that extra flavour. If not for the price($5.70), I would have ordered more.

The Shiitake mushroom stuffed with chicken was average really. The chicken taste overwhelmed the mushroom and it was a tad too salty.

Ebi - At $7 per relatively large prawn, its honestly quite expensive especially when there was no marination or anything, save for the dash of salt sprinkled whilst grilling. To give it credit, the prawns were sweet with a nice grilled taste. But believe me, take away the shells and the meat is minimal.

Tokusei Tsukune - Nanbantei's Tokusei Tsukune or house special meatballs, was essentially 2 skewers of meat merged into one huge and rather unsightly chunk and came served with a single raw quail's egg sliced off at the top. The meat was nicely minced with bits of uneveness but I did find the dish to be very salty probably due to the sauce. A decent dish, but not fantastic.

Shiitake - Yet another overly salty dish, the shiitake didn't come across as too dry though due to the sauce. Not something I would order again for just over $5.

Yaki Onigiri - A Japanese speciality according to the waitress, the Yaki Onigiri was rather interesting and looked very much like a corn cob. Grilled to charred and hard on the outside yet a little soft and sticky on the inside. The flavours were a mix and match of salty and spicy, which honestly was a terrible end to the meal. It definitely didn't help that bits of the charred rice were very prone to getting lodged in between my teeth.

$68 for a meal with such meagre portions is ridiculously expensive in my opinion, even though the food is fairly decent. To be fair, Nanbantei does offer set meals at $32++ for 8 sticks of yakitori which does seem a better deal, but going ala carte is definitely a big no no. Drinks are expensive as well and no complimentary iced water is served.

Came with my friends, when we got there,it was almost full house
The yakitori choice here is more limited, with the standard chicken parts , some bacon/belly pork-wrapped selections, a few other meat & seafood skewers.
We ordered a few stick & deep fried tofu, garlic rice & cold Cha Soba
The tofu was not very nice,it was quite generic tasting, like a slightly jazzed-up agedashi tofu.
The garlic rice was yummy & a perfect companion to the yakitori
Overall i rate 8/10

Nanbantei offers great Japanese food and I love the ramen they served. It costs around $10 for a bowl of ramen. I like the soup base as it is not too salty and the noodles are cooked just right without being soggy. The portion is average but it managed to keep my stomach filling.

Personally, I feel this is the BEST place for yakitori in Singapore so far.

Each and every sticks of yakitori tastes amazing. The appetizer, sticks of vegetables is also very nice. Fresh, crunchy vegetable together with the sauce, the combination is perfect.

The setting of the restaurant is very 'japanese-like'. Very cosy and small. Often full house, so reservations is recomended. Else, go very early to get a seat!
There is also counter seat where you get to see the chef cooks.

Overall, this place is great! It will still continue to be one of my fav restaurant.
