Egg Tarts

Tong Heng Confectionery sells traditional chinese pastries and baked goods, and I decided to try their egg tarts. Their egg tarts are not conventionally shaped and round, but rather, in a unique diamond shape. You could savour their egg tarts after refrigeration, but in my opinion, that wouldn't taste as good as after you've heated it up again. The crust is not those melt-in-your mouth type, but a little more cookie-like. I like it as it is not too sweet.

Snacks

Their egg tarts and char siew pastry are always the reason for me to go back. I have yet to try something as good as their egg tart. The flaky pasty has got a nice buttery taste and the egg custard with a smooth and soft texture.
The char siew pastry has got juicy sweet char siew filling in the equally buttery paste with sesame seeds on top. Their prices have increased through the years but still my top choice for snacks.

Tong Heng Specialist
Smile 2013-04-09

I never like egg tarts till I tried the one at South Bridge Road by Tong Heng Specialist in Traditional Chinese Pastries ! My friend bought it for me the first time. It was tasty and crispy.

What I like about the egg tart is that it is really crispy on the outside and when you tried the egg filling in the middle of the egg tart, it is so smooth that you can gulp it down.

I never stop buying egg tarts whenever im in the area. Yummy!

For non- egg tart lovers, go try it ! I bet you will love it like I do smile

awesome eggtarts
Smile 2013-03-16

Their egg tarts are the oh-so-famous ones. i can't seems to leave the store without at least 2 boxes of egg tarts for my family. Prices had increased insignificantly over the years, but it is still worth it.

   coconut egg tart

this is their coconut egg tart, my number one top choice. the crust is crispy and the egg and coconut slices blend so wel together that whenever i think of them, i salivate!

   egg tart

this is their normal egg tart which is awesome too but i still prefer the coconut flavoured egg tart

Happy tart in the morning
Just OK 2013-01-25

This place has killed all other egg tarts for me. I've been coming here since I was a tot, and seen various outlets appear in malls and then die a torturous death. Whenever I pass by, I have to pick up some. It's not me, it's the the siren song of these tarty things. The auntie will always ask "How many you want?" and I'll go "However many can go into a box. Squeezy also never mind".

Prices have gone up significantly over the years but the standard is just as good. Tip for the uninitiated - these babies aren't meant to be kept overnight, else the eggy bits will get a little watery and the crust soggy. Also, when you open the box in the morning, you'll find that the eggy part has an earthquake like split down the middle, not sure why. Either that or some have gone missing, and your pesky little brother will vehemently deny all knowledge of the incident, all the while wiping crumbs off his face.

awesome egg tarts
Smile 2012-12-30

My mother came back from a meeting at Chinatown, she bought back the delicious Tong Heng Egg Tarts. Too bad I ate a too hearty dinner so I could not stomach them for supper and had to keep them for breakfast. Despite keeping the egg tarts overnight, the egg tarts tasted so good. the pastry did become a little soft but the buttery fragrance still remained there. The custard of the egg tart is not too sweet, very smooth and goes well with the pastry. It was very satisfying.

Tong heng egg tarts
Smile 2012-11-05

Tong Heng egg tarts are famed to be one of the best egg tarts and I can understand why it is so when I tried them yesterday. Their egg tarts are in a signature diamond shape with a wobbly crust. The crust is more towards the flaky crust even though it is not strictly so, since flaky crust egg tarts are enveloped in many layers but Tong Heng’s egg tarts are not really layered. Regardless, it is still very tasty because the crust is thin and flaky and with each bite, I could taste more of the smooth and wobbly egg tart. Although it is slightly sweeter than I would like it to be, it is still acceptable. They also sell a coconut egg tart which I will like to try next time.

White Sesame Paste
Smile 2012-10-22

This 1920s shop specialised in egg tarts, traditional wedding cake, wife cake and traditional Chinese pastry. I stopped by to have a snack and bought one of the curry puff. The curry puff is not the usual type but a baked version with spicy and sweet curry chicken and boiled egg. It is like Japaneses curry chicken wrapped in a baked pastry. The taste is quite good if you do not mind that it is sweeter.

I was surprise to see they also see a range of hot traditional dessert, like Almond Paste, Black Sesame and the unsual White Sesame Paste. Since I have not tried the white sesame paste, I decided to order a bowl to try.

I sat down in the marble topped table and my bowl of white sesame paste came piping hot. It looks like my favorite Walnut Paste which they did not sell. I guess the creamy brown color came from frying the white sesame. The sweetness was just right and it was fragrant. It was so smooth with no lumps and burnt taste. I would have bought more of this dessert if I was going home straight.

I am still craving for it and I think this is the only place that I know of that sell the white version of Sesame Paste. Do
gave it a try if you are near Chinatown.

Curry puff
Just OK 2012-07-31

Some said this could be one of the best curry puff in Singapore. I tried based on their recommendation but could not quite agree after trying. The crust tasted different, it did not have flaky texture like most curry puffs. It tasted a bit towards the short crust pasty that have got a slight buttery taste. The curry potato filling is towards the mixture of the japanese curry and indian curry. I do not quite appreciate such a flavor and this is not really my kind of curry puff.

Famous heritage brand egg tarts
Just OK 2012-07-03

Heard of this famous heritage brand from many people and decided to give it a try since I was in Chinatown. Each egg tart costs around $1.50 and is one of its selling pastries. The egg tart is generally pleasing though slightly oily but still nice as the egg custard is soft and melts in the mouth. Other than the egg tarts, I also decided to try the red bean pastries and char siew su. The red bean pastries was a little too sweet for me but it tasted well with the sesame and well baked. The char siew su melts in the mouth and unlike many other stalls who sell, the filling in the middle was not too sweet.

the best egg tarts
Smile 2012-05-21

The Best Egg Tarts ever! I have been patronizing this shop for years, since i was young. It is a must go whenever you are in Chinatown. This shop sells the nicest eggs tarts which it is also famous for. The crust is in a uniquely diamond shape, and it is crisp and light to taste. The egg is also very soft and the sweetness is just right.

The only downside is that the price has been increasing through the years, used to be $1, but now it has risen to $1.40. But still its taste and size has remained constant throughout the years. smile

I've tried everything.. almost
Smile 2012-01-11

For photos, please visit Rubbish Eat Rubbish Grow: http://rubbisheatrubbishgrow.wordpress.com/2012/01/11/tong-heng-东兴-chinatown/

Tong Heng has been around since the early 1900s! That’s 100 years of history in Singapore.

There are two main Chinese pastries in Chinatown, both with their own distinct taste but I prefer Tong Heng. I’ve tried almost everything there including the Chinese desserts.

Over the years, I’ve tried most of their products, even their Chinese desserts. (Bet you didn’t know they sell Chinese desserts!) The diamond-shaped egg tart is the most awesomest! Because it sells quickly, they are always baking new batches and so the tart is usually hot. It’s like M&M, melts in your mouth, not in your hands, with just the right amount of sweetness. The other specialty in the shop is the char siew su. This one is different from other places because there is a slight saltiness to it, the char siew is moist and just a little bit charred–which is the best kind of char siew. My third favorite is the egg cake (鸡蛋糕) because it’s light and fluffy.

The shop also does chinese new year goodies, mooncakes, wedding pastries and baby’s first month.

Although there are seats in the shop, which is like the Chinese style of a cafe, people usually takeaway.

Traditional Chinese Pastries
Smile 2012-01-04

Brought some Egg Tart and Lao Po Biscuit to try. The egg tart was well made and cooked with a soft and smooth egg custard and also a bit milky taste. Although the skin was a bit soft, but the overall taste of the egg tart was good and was different from the other egg tart that is sold outside. As for the lao po biscuit, it has a crispy skin with a layer of melon in between. It has a light melon taste, chewy texture and a good combination. Overall a very good shop that offers traditional chinese pastries at a reasonable price. A MUST TRY IF YOU LIKE TRADITIONAL CHINESE PASTRIES !! GREAT FOR THE COMING CHINESE NEW YEAR ... GOOD !!

The best Egg Tart in Singapore.
Smile 2011-12-11

This is my only choice when i do not have access to the egg tarts from Tai Cheong Bakery in Hong Kong.

This is the closet possible i could find in Singapore in comparable to those delicious egg tarts from Tai Cheong's. Whenever i have gotten a craving then i would come here for a quick fix.

I have not been here for a while and they still tasted amazingly good. The crust is always thin and flaky together with the soft and smooth egg custard. And just 1 egg tart is never enough for me, i need at least 2 egg tarts to feel satisfied and that is why i always ended up getting at least a dozen.

I have no doubt this is the best Egg Tart in Singapore.
