Ah Chew - Traditional Desserts
Just OK 3 days ago

Ah Chew is very popular among my friends, together with Ji De Chi, and we will definitely drop by one of them when we meet up in the bugis area. This time, I had the grass jelly and added a scoop of ice cream - ice cream was your normal vanilla ice cream, and the grass jelly was smooth and icy, a very refreshing dessert. We also shared the durian sago which was very creamy and rich. The watermelon sago was average.

traditional & affordable desserts!
Smile 2013-05-14

Green bean soup with durian is highly recommended as durian was fresh and of just right texture such that it did not mix with the soup and was neither too hard.
Red bean paste with lily bulb was slightly disappointing to me as it felt as if it was thicken with starch instead of making up of more beans. It was however not very sweet.
Honeydew sago was delicious with the taste of generous coconut milk.

The staff however is rude. Lady serving me was impatient and did not smile or gave any friendly smiles. Food served pretty quick though.

Good place for desserts
Just OK 2013-05-03 (Related Review)

Whenever I am in the area, I will make an effort to walk to Ah Chew for their desserts. Ah Chew and Ji De Chi across the street are 2 stalls that serve good chinese desserts in Bugis. Having tried the mango pomelo dessert from Ah Chew before, I decided to try their durian sago. Durian puree was thick and very flavourful, but after eating half of it, one could not help it but feel "jelat". Best to share it with a few friends.

Dessert time!
Just OK 2013-04-07

Tonite bringing friends who has not been to this place. They are instantly attracted to the traditional wooden door and its wooden tables and chairs. The place is nicely decorated with Chinese lanterns.

I am having water chestnut with egg ($2.80) which I feel is a very watered down version. The water chestnut slices are too big too.

2 of the gals are having the fresh milk steamed egg white ($3.30) which they feel is interesting and nice.

Another is having honeydew sago ($3.30) with a topup of $1 for a scoop of ice-cream. Very big bowl. Feel that with the additional of ice-cream, the dessert becomes even creamer and thicker in taste.

Very crowded and noisy, one may need to queue up for a table. But you will get a table very fast. Tables are clean up very fast, but not very well done as we could see a number of ants making their ways around the table. Order is served very fast after ordering. Wide variety of dessert.

Always good for traditional chinese desserts
Smile 2013-04-03

Ah Chew is the place to go for affordable and delicious desserts on a hot day. Have tried the mango pomelo sago many times and I've always liked the pomelo and mango bits, and the thick mango puree. Also tried the aloe vera dessert which was very refreshing and thirst-quenching. All desserts range from $2-$4 with additional charges for toppings like ice cream or glutinous riceballs for hot desserts.

AH CHEW!!!
Smile 2013-03-25

By the title of it you can tell how i excited i am for Ah Chew. Its been years since i have been back here. The previous trip i made for this was just horrible! The q was long and waiting for the seats is like waiting for the sky to fall.
My bad anyway came at the wrong timing.

This time is still crowded, the staff were kind enough to help us out to find a comfortable place for us to dine.
As always, im prepared to get what i have always wanted! Cold Steamed Milk Custard! (I think) My dear friend here goes thru the menu like its a life and death contract. Cant blame him. Too much to choose from.. So finally settled in with the Mango Pomelo with Vanillla Ice cream..Love the steamed milk.. was really smooth and silky just the way i like it. The Mango Pomelo was good too. A tad sweet for me but it was refreshing on a hot sunny day!

Why didn't i came back sooner??!!

Mango Sago <3
Smile 2013-03-17

Singapore's weather is bad, therefore more reason to have dessert every here and there. So whenever I come across Bugis street, I would definitely head down to Ah Chew Dessert for a bowl of nice and tasty Mango Sago. Ah Chew Dessert has lots of variety, be it customers who love hot dessert or those like me who prefer it cold. I've tried their aloe vera Strawberry, Mango Sago with and without pomelo, Honeydew Sago and lastly their Durian Sago.
The Mango sago is thick and sweet, while the sago is really very nice and blends in well in Mango Sago. However I don't really like their pomelo because it has a ting of bitterness in it.

Remember to choose the right time to head down if not it would be quite packed during peak hours.
It's the right place for some old school dessert enjoyment with friends and family.

Food

After craving for so many months, I finally have the chance to slurp on the cooling and mouth watering Mango Pamelo and sago! Their standard are well maintained and never fail my expectation. Love the moment when your bite burst the pamelo pulp, it's shiok. Fruits like mango and pamelo are freshly cut, from the taste you will know that these fruits are not from canned food.

There were long queues after dinner time on a Friday night. In order not to wait for so long, we decided to "ta bao" to skip the long waiting time.

Gui Lin Gao with Water Chest Nut and egg. I felt very cooling & refreshing upon having mouthfuls of the gui lin gao and the water chest nut drink. Silky and smooth we slurp every down our throat at ease.

Service
We are spoilt with choice after reading the menu and the helper doesn't really hurry us to make a choice fast and instead she is quite patient and let other customers first. They handled customers well!

Ambience
Usually pack with long queues. There are helpers to assist customers to queue properly outside the shop and does not block the passage way. Fast turn over time in the restaurant usually.

Price
Relatively reasonable price as the food they provide are refreshing. Worth the time to queue and the calories, definitely!

Tips/Recommendation
Almost all dish is good. Just try it!

Mango Pomelo Sago
Smile 2013-03-05

It was crowded on a Friday night. Thankfully, the queue cleared up quite fast and the group of 6 of us were seated in less than 10 minutes.
I ordered the Mango Pomelo Sago (about $4) and thought it was not bad.
Luckily, the mango was sweet that day.
The system is such that you go to the counter to order and pay, and they will send your order to your seat.

Overall, it is a great place to chill with your friends and I can't wait to return back and try their other desserts!

Know the Sequence
Smile 2013-02-28

There are 2 doors at this dessert place. The sequence for diners is to queue at the 2nd door first (not the cashier one) to wait for seat allocation then queue the cashier queue door for ordering. Fortunately its a dessert place, turn over is quite fast and we did not have to wait long for a seat. Order the safest item, yang zhi gan lu (pomelo mango sago) which cost $3.70. Though we all know such dessert is always dependent on the batch of mangoes but ah chew usually do not disappoint. the sago syrup and mango combination is always more than acceptable.

Chinese dessert
Just OK 2013-01-20

Ah Chew dessert is usually very very crowded on weekends. That's why it takes a strong yen for Chinese desserts for me to head there to eat. As expected, there is a long queue so do expect to wait. The tables are traditional wooden Asian inspired design so it felt a bit like sitting in a (crowded) Chinese tea house. I had the yam sago dessert and this is one that I would recommend sharing if you just had a big meal as the yam is rich and added with the sweet sago coconut liquid, it's quite filling.

Mango Sago
Smile 2013-01-17

This bowl of Mango Sago is the Signature Dessert in this shop!
I came all the way to Bugis just for this!!!!
Price: Approximately $4

This is a great dessert especially during a hot day.
The pamelo and sago bits went so well with the 'soup'.
The mango was also fresh and sweet.
The soup was not too sweet.
When served with ice cubes, this bowl of dessert tasted extremely good!!

Overall, although the price of this bowl of dessert was quite expensive for me, I find it alright for me to eat this once a while to pamper myself smile

Service was good and environment was great and comfortable smile

Traditional chinese dessert
Smile 2012-11-30

Ah Chew Desserts offer traditional Hong Kong style dessert in hot or cold and also a wide variety of desserts for you to choose from.

To satisfy the sweet tooth cravings of their patrons, their opening hours can be extended to quite late or until their hot dessert is sold out.

Was there near to 11pm and the place is nearly filled up even though it is a normal weekday. Ordered the big bowl of almond paste ($2.80) and was surprised that it is filled up to the brim, compared to some places outside which is only 3/4 filled.

I like the texture of the almond paste when it is served hot. Thick and creamy and is not too sweet. However, after a while when the almond paste has drop down to normal room temperature, it sort of become watery. So I guess you have to eat really quick to prevent the paste from become watery. bowl
