Must eat when hot

Everything looks a gooey mess but trust me, it's lip-smackingly delicious. And ridiculously cheap. Our entire meal, including a large bowl of soup, cost only 16 bucks.

Must-Trys: curry chicken, stewed cabbage, braised pork belly and sweet corn with carrot and tomato soup.

Also, this must be eaten piping hot. The gravies become a goopy, super starchy mess once it turns tepid.

a mess that taste good pt 2
Just OK 2013-03-27

I was introduced to this stall by a friend who has been eating this curry rice since a decade ago. It has since expanded its shop space to accommodate the ever present crowd and queue. It is a simple, no frills coffee shop that takes you back to the 1980s and is an easy 10 minutes walk from farrer park MRT station.

The curry is thick and flavourful and is poured over your rice together with a sweet gravy. I know it sounds a little odd, and honestly, it isn't a very pretty sight, but the taste is great and I could have finished the plate of rice with just the curry and gravy alone. We had a few dishes to go with our rice and were introduced to the few popular dishes such as the pork cutlet and the stewed cabbage. I wouldn't say that they were fantastic on their own but they complimented the curry and rice well.

Overall, the food in general is pretty good and value for money. The service tends to be quite fast as well, so you wouldn't be left waiting for very long despite the seemingly long queue.

Economical Rice Favorite
Smile 2013-03-12

After trying many several stalls selling scissor cut curry rice, i must say none of them came close. Very much its due to the sauce combination especially the sweet sauce which is more starchy than others. Also i realized that the cabbage, pork belly meat, pork chop and fried egg are all drizzled with that same dark colored sweet sauce. Went with 2 other colleagues for lunch, so we ordered ala carte dishes by small plates to share. Both of them were impressed with the messiness of the dishes and rice yet with totally impressive and appetizing taste for economical rice. Our favorites were the curry chicken and the dry pork chop.

Note to fellow diners: this is roadside coffeeshop style with simple settings so dun expect detailed cleanliness. You order the food at the stall first, then proceed to pay at the counter opposite the serving area and collect your own utensils. i washed my utensils twice smile. They have a tab within the dining area itself for a quick hand wash if needed. Do plan for around $7 per head for sharing of the dishes i mentioned above.

Curry Vegetable Rice with Prawn fritters
Smile 2012-12-26

This is one of my favourite rice stall to get my all-time favourite curry rice. The plain rice here not only fragrant, and the portion is generous and at the correctly texture as well. The curry gravy is always consistance in texture which is quite thick and full of the nice flavour of the different types of spices used in it. Moreover, the cabbage used in cooking in the vegetable curry is also quite crunchy and not too oily as well.

Their deep fried prawn fritters is also one of my must buy items as the outer layer is very crunchy and the fluffyness in it is also smooth and blend in well with the fresh prawns as well. Deep with the chilli sauce will make it even taste better as well.

Usually is quite crowded here during meals' hours, so do be there early to avoid long wait for seats.

a mess that taste good
Just OK 2012-12-18

As unappetizing as this dish looks, it actually tastes incredible. With the traditional hainanese curry sauce and the savoury sauce from the stewed pork mixed together with rice and all the other ingredients, it creates a tasty explosion of flavours in your mouth.

I love the curry chicken wings they serve here as it is cooked till the meat just simply falls off the bones when you bite into it. No effort is required at all.

The hainanese fried pork chop is a little dry, but I guess it adds texture admidst the gloopiness of the sauces. Depending on my mood.

I really like the traditional hainanese cabbage here as well. It's well cooked, and just slightly crunchy. It goes very well with the rice and sauces.

The overall cleanliness of the place is not that great, but it's definitely an authentic experience sitting there, eating your snotty looking mess of a meal. What I can say is this - it definitely tastes better than it looks! And being open late for supper, it's a hearty post-party food!

Famous Curry Rice?
Cries 2012-08-16

I purposely came down during lunch today to try out this famous scissor-cut curry rice with my father after seeing a really long queue while passing by a few days before. According to my father, this is the first scissor-cut curry rice in Singapore.

My first impression of the stall is that they sell very different dishes from other curry rice stalls. And so, I ordered some ngoh hiang, braised pork chop, cabbage and egg for about $4. The presentation is as bad as it can get, but I'm not deterred by any awful looking food as long as it taste good.

After the meal, I felt that the taste doesn't suit me. The curry and the combination of red and black gravy isn't my cup of tea. For the record, I do love curry rice a lot. Other than the ngoh hiang which is quite good, the rest I don't like. Some people might like this, but not me. And I won't be going back again.

Scissor Curry Rice
Smile 2012-07-05

Delightfully drenched with irresistable curry gravy, a plate of Beach Road curry rice served with curry chicken, fried cabbage and fried egg, costs only $3. The distinguishing factor of this curry rice is its special curry gravy which is exceptionally rich and flavorful with just the right sweetness, spiciness, thickness and consistency. Even though the serving was reasonably large, I found myself finishing it mouthful after mouthful and had to resist the temptation of ordering another plate.

Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice
Smile 2012-06-17

This plate of rice looked real messy and unattractive but believe me. It is a real gem. Their stewed cabbage, pork chop/ chicken chop are one of the best along with braised pork. All these are selling at economical price. Also, i guess the name came directly from the dish itself as they will use a scissors and cut up all the food. Then, the entire plate will be drenched in curry and black sauce. TRY IT with no regrets!

Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice
Smile 2012-06-16

Best curry rice ever! I've always have a craving for this even during late nights. Their rice are drenched in thick gooey black sauce and curry sauce. I regretted not mixing the curry sauce, only had the black sauce. After a few mouthful of rice, i went back to ask for some curry sauce to be added onto my plate of half eaten rice. Trust me, even if you don't take spicy food, you really got to mix both sauces! I had their cabbage and pork chop. YUMMY! The place is very run down and dirty i feel. There's cockroaches seen! But food is nice and cheap, no complains.

Hainanese Curry Rice
Smile 2012-06-15

Don't ever be mistaken by this plate of ugly messy gooey rice. It maybe one of the best Hainanese curry rice you ever eaten. Trust me, it's damn good. This is called "scissor-cut curry rice" because the dishes were cut up into bite-sized pieces with a large pair of traditional scissors.

The popular dishes were their braised pork, pork/chicken chop, curry chicken and stewed cabbage.

To get here, alight at Farrer Park MRT station. Take a 5 minutes walk down Kitchener Road. You will walk past City Square Mall and City Square Residences before reaching the restaurant.

Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice
Just OK 2012-05-08

   Average

Went there for dinner with friend. This was the second time I've been there. I ordered Braised Cabbage, Braised Meat and Chicken Cutlet with some curry. They cuts it very fast and gives us generous amount of gravy. The curry gravy was sticky and they will just overflow your plate. The chicken meat was very tender and soft and the curry was not spicy at all. The chicken cutlet was overly cooked that it was slightly burnt. The braised meat was well braised and the meat was tender and soft in texutre. It was juicy too. First bite, it was nice but after getting few bites, I was a bit sick of the overflow curry. Personally, I think the curry was too much for me and I would be rather have more spicy curry. Overall, the food was average.

Curry Rice
Smile 2012-05-06

The interesting point about the curry rice here compared to the others is that you will be ensured that your plate of rice will be flooded with their thick fragrant curry gravy, which your every mouthful of the rice is so tasty and delicious. Whether you pick their vegetable dishes, meat dishes or their seafood dishes, the chef here has all the excellent factors to produce really good standard for all the dishes here. I like their stir fry long bean and sweet and sour pork chop alot. The long bean is crunchy and taste really good. The pork chop is tender and not too oily. Portion served here is also quite generous as well.

curry rice
Smile 2012-05-04

This stall is very famous for its assorted dishes paired with its very tasty curry drenched rice. There are some people who do not want the curry which I feel is pointless ordering from here since their signature is the curry! Anyway, I ordered the curry chicken, cabbage and egg to go with my rice. It looks quite a mess and not appetising with all the ingredients and the curry mixing together. However, taste wise it is tops! The curry rice is so flavourful and it isn't spicy so non-curry lovers can also enjoy it. The chicken meat is especially tender and soft and the cabbage is also cooked until it is soft and you can almost slurp it.

scissor curry rice
Smile 2012-04-11

This stall has been around since I am a teenager. The food still tastes the same after all these years. This curry rice stall is authentic Hai Nan style curry rice where the curry gravy is sticky and they will just overflow your plate of rice with it, but the best thing is it tastes good. Though I always thought that they always give a small portion of the pork chop. i love their eggs too. These day, they even have chicken chop (during my younger days, I remember that they don have chicken).

This stall got their name due to the way the owner cuts the items u ordered with a scissors. He cuts it very fast and they give us generous amount of gravy! It's like Mixed Vegetable Rice where u orders the sides to go with the rice and curry! Thumbs up for the generous serving! Nevertheless, don’t takeaways the rice, the curry will make the rice very soggy. Dine in is the favorable choice.
