Met up with ex-colleague from McDonald's cos the last time we met was like 4 years ago! Since we have not been to Sakae Sushi for quite some time, we decided to have our dinner there.

I'm pretty surprised to find Hotata Mentaiko $14.99 in Sakae Sushi! If you love Mentaiko, remember to order this on your next visit!

I also quite like the Ika Karaage Agemono $8.99, but it's a little salty

Apart from these 2, we also had the standard stuffs like sashimi & sushi

Service was quite prompt too! Manager on duty was also nice to shift us to a slightly bigger table upon request.

Sashimi sushi
Smile 2013-04-06

I am a super big fan of japanese food, and especially enjoy eating the different types of sushi available in the restaurant menus. ONe of my all-time favourite will be the sashimi sushi. Large and thick slices of sashimi has been topped on the japanese rice cube, that is very fresh and chewy. Premium rice has been used to make their sushi which is also firm and fragrant.

Sakae Sushi used to be one of my family's favourite hangout when we were staying in Bukit Batok. Sadly, its standard has dropped for a certain period of time but once in a while we still visit it for some Japanese food.

This is the Stir-fried Konnyaku Noodles (beef) for $9.99. The price was reasonable for the portion. The noodles were some sort of glass noodles that was springy and slightly crunchy. Beef was soft and tender and there were mushrooms and sliced carrots as garnishing. Surprisingly, there was quite a lot of beef cubes and I think it might be able to feed 2 small-eaters.

I'm not sure if the staff has undergone hygiene trainings before but when I requested for one of them to refill the ginger slices, she simply left the mini tong on the table. I was rather disgusted by that action and didn't touch the ginger slices subsequently. Maybe it's time to step up on hygiene classes for Sakae Sushi staff.

Sakae Signatures

My family and I went down to lot 1 for sushi and decided to try the new monthly creation that they had!
Sadly, a few of the items were out of stock and we could only try the 2 out of 5 of it, i think we went down too late and the chef was lazy or had already went home! ):

Food:

Pepper Seafood Treasures - $6.99

This dish came in a cute presentation, with the bell pepper exactly as it is in the first picture. When you open the cheese, there's salmon, mushrooms and chicken (?) Not very seafood-y but it was good! The bell pepper was crunchy and fresh and had this very.. natural taste. The cheese melted nicely and added to the fragrance of the salmon and mushroom.
lol

Seafood Hana Sushi - $8.99

I did not really like this dish because of the whitish thing at the top (raw squid if i'm not wrong), it tasted really mushy and had an awkward taste. I don't know how to describe it. The salmon sashimi that wrapped the sushi was pretty thin, about 2 pieces made 1 salmon sashimi, but they had about 3 pieces? So if i do the math, 9/2 = 4.5 pieces.. they sell 5 pieces for $6.99 if i'm not wrong, so this dish is quite worth it if you like the squid and salmon sashimi.

Salmon Sashimi (8pcs) - $9.99

Mandatory dish to order in a japanese restaurant!
The salmon sashimi was fresh.

Tip for ordering salmon sashimi: 8 pieces is a few cents cheaper than the 5 pieces one!

I like this outlet as the waiters are generally quite nice and although there seem to be a constant flow of newbies working, they were quite good in their service and were very eager to learn!
Hurry head down to try the monthly dishes before it's gone!

Small place, good service
Smile 2013-01-14

A really small restaurant always with a long queue outside. If you're planning to dine there, it's the best to make a reservation or queue early! Tried their tempura ramen and curry rice, and they wasn't as splendid as their sushi definitely, just average. The serving is quite large, so it's not recommended to gorge down a lot of sushi and ordering a main dish at the same time. However, something I do appreciate is that they placed the tempura prawns separately from the soupy noodles, unlike in some places, preventing them from turning soggy.

A must try in my opinion is the fried salmon. Surprisingly, they are not as dry as they sound, and were actually cooked to perfection. Soft and juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside. The serving is quite large too, for its price.

Teppanyaki
Just OK 2013-01-09

I ordered the Beef Premium Set from the teppanyaki side. Had to wait awhile, especially since it was dinner period.

The set cost $23.99 and if you want to change the rice to garlic rice, it cost $2.70 for the top up.

This set consist of beef, salmon, half shelled scallop, chawamushi, assorted vegetables (salad & bean sprout), miso soup and plain rice.

1. Beef, salmon, half-shelled scallop (since they placed it all in one plate)

The physical food was definitely NOT representative of the image in the menu. I thought it was going to be acceptable portions of each dish. But turns out the whole set is actually.. pretty small size.
The beef was cooked with kimchi, giving it a tinge of spiciness, but it was sour too. Kind of a weird mix with beef. But still acceptable.
Salmon was quite a thin slice, it was so flat, one piece felt like it can be eaten in 3 mouths.
The half-shelled scallop is one of my favourite amongst the set. I like the smokey flavour of it and there was mayonnaise on top of it to boost the flavour.

2. Chawamushi
I like how they used the onion as the bowl! Very creative! This is a dish where one can eat the bowl as well! HAHA! It is similar to the normal chawamushi as it has crabmeat and meat inside of it.

The salad taste like the sakae salad, just that it was of a smaller portion. Quite nice as the vege were crunchy and the salad sauce was a nice mix.
The beansprouts were OK. It was cooked with lady fingers, onions and carrots. A little too oily for me, but still alright.

Lastly, I top up the rice to garlic rice. I felt the cost was a little expensive! But, it is more or less worth it as the garlic rice was very fragrant! and not boring at all!

Whole set! with a few food intruders.

Sushi for tots
Smile 2012-11-30

Came here for lunch on a lazy weekend. Was surprised to find the outlet not as crowded as we expected. Was glad to find that there were vegetarian options available too!

Edible rice paper was used for the vegetarian sushi. It was individually wrapped and contained cucumbers, carrots lettuce and mangoes. It was simple but tasted amazing. 9/10

Vegetable tempura was basically assorted vegetables (which came in a variety) which were covered in flour before being fried. They tasted crisp and went well with soy sauce 8/10

Potato Koroke which is one of the best dishes here. It contained potatoes as well as mixed vegetables. It was very crispy on the outside and left a very distinct taste. This can be compared to hash browns 9.5/10

The tofu here was succulent and was dipped in terriyaki sauce. It was a simple dish that left a lasting impression.

It is nice to find that the restaurants in singapore and finally having a couple of vegetarian options even when it comes to a sushi outlet.

I like it when i bite on it,the water will come out,it is so juicy.
I like the fried crab meat too, crispy and sweet.
This restaurant is very peace and quiet,so i also feel embarrass that when i make noise with my friends.
But i really enjoy this meal

sakae uses ipad
Smile 2012-03-22

I went to sakae sushi with my daughter for dinner the other day. I was surprised to see that they have changed all their computers to ipads. I think it was a good idea as the mouse was pretty troublesome and only one person can used it at a time. Now that it is touch screen, it makes it easier to place an order. We ordered a number of sushi, the fish egg one was a must. I just love their fish eggs. Cannot get as tasty ones as theirs here. The fish eggs are very crunchy and when you bite into it, it is very juicy. I ate at many sushi places and the shoyu at sakae is one of the nicest. It goes well with all the sushi.

SAKAE
Smile 2012-01-30

it wasnt too long ago when i promised myself to write sakae sushi off my list of places to dine, but my saturday date thought she wanted to give it a try. on seeing that they've revamped the decor, i thought yeah, let's give it a chance to redeem its place on my list.

service was prompt and we were quickly seated. the service staff was kind enough to give us our privacy for a fair bit of chatter before tending to us again for orders. casually, we asked for the hot green tea, and did the rest of the orders via the digitised touch screen menu.

somehow, we were on the same chapter, and decided to try out some of the SOP sashimi & sushi. all that we picked were colored & red plates and had our fill.

in summary, i'd say that there's been some improvement in the quality of the rice, while the cuts of the fishes erased my past horror.

a disappointing dinner
Cries 2011-08-04

my friends and i could not decide what to have for dinner so we headed to sakae sushi for some sushi! we waited quite long to be served to a table. when we got there, our computer was spoilt, so we had to always wave down the busy waitresses to take our order. everything was okay until my soft shell crab sushi came. the crab was cold and no longer crispy, i wondered how long they left it in the open. it did not taste fresh as well. so disappointed! and by the way, i think the place needs some renovations too!

Quality sushi at sakae sushi
Smile 2011-07-14

On mother's day, I brought my family to sakae sushi to eat because my mum likes to eat sushi, but didnt get to eat that often.

We chose to go ala carte because I think it is more worth the money than the buffet. We can order red plates and even noodles, whereas buffet is mainly restricted to the basic sushi and those on the conveyor belt.

The colours of the plates are nice for photography and I like the idea of stacking the plates. It is a fun experience with your family and friends. I had fun eating and snappning photos as I like the presentation of the food as well.

My favourite is the chawamushi. I had 2 to 3 cups of them I remembered. It was served in a nice cup and it is always warm, never cold. Love the taste and the ingredients inside. They have a few flavours, but all of them are nice..

Will go back there again!

sushis
Smile 2011-07-05

With so many outlets in singapore, Sakae Sushi is one place to visit to have your fix of sushis. I always liked ordering unagi sushi, tuna and spicy salmon sushis. Together with the wasabi, i will devour the sushi in one mouthful. The spicy salmon sushi is not very spicy - and note that the salmon is raw. When i first ordered it, I didn't know it is raw but i still enjoyed it a lot since i can love sashimis as well.
