For full review and more photos, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2014/01/superstar-k-tanjong-pagar-thumbsforfood.html One of the best must-haves for good barbeque meat is non other than the fire! Meat barbecued with Charcoal fire definitely makes the meat more fragrant! Superstar K also has a smoke vent directly under every barbecue pit to ensure that the place does not get overly smoky.Patrons would have to crowd around a stove and dine. I really quite like the vibrant atmosphere of the restaurant as it resonates the ones in Korea. A tip for ladies or anyone who has bags, you can lift up the seat of the stool to reveal a compartment for you to stow your bags away to refrain them for having the barbecue smell. Every patron will be served with their own tray of sauces and condiments. I like this concept as it is cleaner and more convenient. For those who are wondering what the onion sauce is for, you can actually dip marinated meat in it for it to enhance its flavor. We tried their Beef as it was recommended by the staff there. We saw many tables eating their beef as well. Look at how beautifully marbled the beef is below! The good thing is also that the staff will help you cook the meat so you can happily enjoy chatting with friends whilst waiting for the meat to be done. We found the beef really quite good and juicy!Yes, Superstar K also serves up steamed egg (for free with order of BBQ meat) ! You can ask for one refill for this as well! It is soooo good! The egg is really fluffy and delicious. Goes really well with rice!In the middle of the picture below, that is one of the must-try in out opinion. The curded beancurd soup! It is spicy, appetising and the beancurd is really smooth! Totally appetising and delicious.Overall, we had a great experience at Superstar K! We would recommend Superstar K for small group of 3-4 friends which we feel is most comfortable to seat around the table. I personally feel that Superstar K is quite underrated as it does serve up relatively good meat. Korean food lovers, do give this place a try! (There's another branch opened at Telok Ayer as well)

Walk along the stretch of Tanjong Pagar Road and u will see many Korean restaurants lining both sides of the road but you would only find one with many people queuing outside the restaurant starting from as early as before 7pm.Superstar K is run by Koreans and most of them are pretty fluent in English so ordering food is not a problem at all. I would recommend that you make advance reservation before heading down (they don't take reservation during peak hours) or else be prepared to sit outside and restaurant and wait at 20 mins to a hour to get a table.Since they are mainly a Korean BBQ restaurant, most of the food are meat (beef, chicken and pork) but they do have other yummy dishes like seafood pancake, spicy and non-spicy cold noodles, ginseng chicken soup, to name a few. After u've ordered your food, they will serve the side dishes to your table. Side dishes include anchovies, kimchi, beancurd skin, potato salad and a complimentary steamed egg. Lettuce is also provided. How the Koreans eat is that you will wrap the lettuce with your BBQ meat + rice+ garlic and then stuff the whole lot in one mouthful. LOL! For the kind of meat, I would usually order pork neck cos I find it juicier and more tender. If u prefer fatty meat, pork belly would be ideal too. The last time I went with my friends, we ordered chilled Makkoli (Korean rice wine) and it actually goes quite well with the BBQ meat. Should try it if you do take alcohol. Anyway the alcohol content is around 6-7% so there's no need to worry about getting drunk if u drink a bowl of it (btw the staff will transfer the bottle of Makkoli into a kettle and u pour it into a bowl yourself).Though the table is kinda small and the seating arrangement is rather cramped, it's still a good place for friend's gathering and good food. Definitely going back for more pork neck and makkoli. *drool*

While Korean BBQ has becoming more in trend nowadays, we can easily see a handful of Korean BBQ shophouses swarmed into areas like Tanjong Pagar and Super Star K is also one of them. Can you see the coolness from the aircon? Placement of tables were carefully thought with ventilation pipes hanging ahead. Also, the dining area were divided into two sections in the restaurant leaving a comfortable walkway in the middle. On the sides of the walls, they had installed chalk boards for customers to scribbled on. Chalks were provided in the container, just put down your thoughts there.A lot of Korean BBQ restaurant had adopted the use of extendable exhaust pipes which helped to suck away and minimise the BBQ scent on our clothing. Though it could not remove the smell entirely, I would say that at least the smell was not that heavy. It's quite typical to enjoy so many side dishes in a Korean cuisine and just like any other Korean restaurant in Singapore a wide spread of complimentary dishes were provided from Ikan Billis, Kimchi, beansprouts, smashed potatoes and their kind of fish cakes.Pork Belly tasted good without much marination. Fatty and juicy! Yums!Cost: $18This pot of steam egg was served later and was also one of the complimentary dishes. As we dug the egg, a lot of steam were seem evaporating . In fact, they were soft and quite tasty seasoned in good stock.A light milky yet refreshing bowl of Ginseng Soup garnished with chopped spring onions. This is one of the korean dish I like as i find it special to have glutinous rice slowed cook with chicken till the meat was so tender and easily pulls off from the bone. Dont be mislead that this dish is actually a bowl of soup, the rice is quite filling actually.A basket of fresh lettuce was given. For those who were puzzled, those lettuces were actually used to wrapped the BBQ meat before consumption. Though the BBQ meat were good enough to be consumed alone, the lettuce together with the condiments had packed the dining experience with Korean Culture. For additional kick, do wrapped those savoury meats with the leafy greens.Being inside an authentic restaurant, how can we missed trying out the kimchi? The serving was enormous, perhaps too much for 2 of us to handle. Considering the price, I would say its price and with the amount of seafood given like mussels and squid, I would say price is explanatory. Personally, I felt that it was too floury with too much carbohydrates in the dish. After eating a few small pieces, I chose to swap and leave my stomach room for the meat instead. Our grill was smeared with oil and black patches soon after barbaquing and the server had carefully detached the scalding hot grilled and took it back into the kitchen for washing. The pork neck meat was quite thick and a different metal grill was used. The slab of meat was put to simmered on the grill for sometime. As it was thick, the amount of time taken was pretty long before it gets cooked. Unbelievable! It's really worth waiting for. The pieces of meat tasted very closed to Char Siew! Love it lots!Service wise, it's a little tricky here as most of them were Korean. Often we had misinterpret each others intention as their response were rather short. We requested for more water and chilli, their response was OK but items were not given eventually.Overall, I find that having Korean BBQ in Singapore was rather expensive. I have not found a place to dine a Korean cuisine without burning a hole in the pocket. But still, considering the meat cuts and quality, they were still well worth the money. Superstar K is definitely worth a try for Korean BBQ, as their complementary side dishes are delicious as well as the quality cuts of meat used. The steamed egg is what really blew me away.Get the Pork Belly and Grilled beef ribs, which are excellent choice meats without much marination. The waiters even grill the meat for you!Although not as cheap as BBQ buffet like 2D1N Siju Bang, you don't have to queue for hours like buying Hello Kitty either and squeeze with K-pop crazy teens at the buffet table. For full review and more photos, please visit http://sethlui.com/food-review-superstar/

I'm a big fan of korean bbq food! And i love the food here. Its very authentic and the staffs here are very friendly too. Usually i will order pork belly ( 2 portion ) with kimchi soup. Complimentary side dishes are served too. My favourite are mash potato, fish cake and kimchi. Staffs will help us to bbq the meat despite the crowd in the place. The pork belly is really yummy! NOt too hard, very well marinated, and fresh too. Each of us is given a tray of sauce and pieces of garlic to eat with the bbq meat. Personally i feel that it taste best just with the sauce. Also, not forgetting that the kimchi soup is really nice too! it is not those diluted kimchi soup that you get from other unauthentic korean restaurant. Overall, it is a wonderful experiene to dine in here! thumbs up for the quality of food and service will definitely be back again.
