Having came here once for desserts, I decided to try their mains. I ordered the Chargrilled Wagyu Beef and Mushroom Pizza, which I have read to be one of the more popular ones on the menu. There were large pieces of wagyu beef which were not too tough, and sautéed mushrooms with caramelized onions which added more flavour to the food. The White Wine cream sauce also complements the pizza well. Cracker-like pizza crust was also enjoyable.

Yummy Steak
Smile 2013-04-27
Have a ex-classmates' gathering in this posh restaurant as most of my friends enjoy having fine dining. I have bought their signature steak, which is really tender and juicy. It is almost grilled to perfection and goes really well with the side dishes, especially the crispy french fries which are tasty and not too oily. The scrambled egg is smooth and reallly easy to eat too. The restaurant environment is clean and quiet, great venue for a long chat with friends. The service here is equally polite and good too.

Good Ambience, Average Desserts
Just OK 2013-04-05

Drove past this nice looking place and decided to stop for desserts. Presentation of waffle with ice cream is average, does not seem like they've put a lot of thought and effort into it. Waited for quite sometime before it was served, although the place wasn't full house. Neither the waffle nor ice cream was fantastic, but the ambience was good, with lots of vintage decor. Will drop by again for a full meal in future.

The Coastal Settlement
Smile 2013-03-13
The Coastal Settlement has been on my list for quite some time but I haven't had the chance to visit it because it was really out of the way. But because Glenn was booking out (for the first time since his 2 weeks of confinement), I took the opportunity to bring him along to check out this place!

Unless you drive, the only bus service that operates along the road is 29.

The Coast Salad - $16 (5/5)

THAT SAUCE IS PERFECT. It is somewhat similar to the Yu Sheng sauce, with a slight nutty taste. Everything in the jar tasted so good with it! The cocktail prawns were so fresh and the small strips of pork complements it so well. Even Glenn, who isn't a vegetable lover, finished most of it.

Truffle Mushroom Fettucine - $21 (4.5/5)

I like that the truffle oil is not overpowering, yet strong enough for me to taste it. The shaved parmesan cheese blended in quickly as I mixed everything. The mushroom also tasted really flavorful! Even though I'm quite a mushroom lover, I'm not a cream based kind of person, so the dish was wiped out with the help of Glenn.

Prawn Aglio Olio with XO Sauce - $22 (4/5)

From the way Glenn finished this dish when I was only halfway through mine (or maybe because army has trained him to finish his food fast), it must be really delicious. But Glenn says that the dish was rather okay though the prawns were really huge and fresh.

Nothing to pick about the service here, or maybe it was because there were not much patrons at the time we were there. But nevertheless, we were pretty impressed with their service.

What more could we ask for about the ambiance? We could stay there the whole day! This is truly one of the place that we would recommend our friends to come.

Isolated Indulgence
Smile 2013-01-25
There are somethings in live worth going that extra mile for. In the case of The Coastal Settlement, make that many many miles. Located in the vicinity of Changi Prison, the trip to the restaurant is not for the faint-hearted. Without a car, it might be quite the cab fare you'll have to contend with.

But even so, the restaurant is for most part packed. The idyllic, off-the-grid appeal of The Coastal Settlement apparently appeals to many. And I haven't even gotten around to talking about the food.

   Portobello Fries $15

For starters, Portobello Fries - $15. A posh, satisfying twist on common potato fries, the portobello mushroom slices are deep fried with a light breaded crust then served with a aromatic truffle mayonaise. Fingers lickin' good!

   Pizza Half & Half $25

The restaurant offers a range of pizzas as well. To get the most buck out of our money, we decided to opt for a Half & Half, which allowed us to try 2 flavours: the Chargrilled Wagyu Beef Pizza w/ Mushroom as well as well as the Prosciutto & Arugula Pizza. At $25 for a 7" pizza, it mght come off a tad pricey, but I am just so happy that I got to taste the Wagyu Beef Pizza. I just found my new favourite flavour!

   Rib Eye Rosti $32

I love beef. I love potatoes. So the Rib Eye Rosti was a no-brainer choice for my main course. The dish came beautifully prepared, grill lines seared magnificently into the juicy medium-done rib eye, and a generous portion of handcut rosti that can match those at Marche at any day!

Overall, great food, great place, a tad pricey but I'd still come for the good food and service.

Great Hangout Place

Food
Beef and Truffle Mushroom Pizza - I have never tried a pizza with beef and mushroom and surprisingly it is fantastic. You Should try this.

Calm Chowder with Bread - The soup tastes good and had an exceptional taste. Although the soup may looks thin and not the usual creamy kind. It is definitely worth your taste buds.

Toast with Otah - Was shocked when i see toast with otah in a western restaurant. A very different kind of experience. Otah tastes good as well.

Ambiance
Decorated with stuff from the 70s and 80s, it just make us feel so lay back dinning there. There are ample seats and place is rather spacious.

Service
Although there are no seats for 2 during dinner hours for us. They recommend us to sit at the bar counter. Speed is rather fast and they do follow ups to check if the food is alright. I like their service.

Recommendation
The toilets are outside the restaurant and you might want to bring some insect repellent while waiting for the toilet. The toilet has lemon grass fragrance which repels insects.

Settle down like a retired man!
Just OK 2012-12-27
Located in an extremely secluded area in Changi, cars are a preferable mode of transport to this laid-back Coastal settlement. We gathered here together with relatives to celebrate my dad's birthday, and it was a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city area as there were very few cars.

We were welcomed by the beautiful antique that highlights the Singapore history, and also there were 'atap chee' (colorful biscuits, many singaporeans would term it as their 'favourite childhood biscuit') given away for free! I was so happily eating them that I forgot to take a picture of these gems, *grins* lol

   Beef Pizza

This plate of beef pizza is a great mouth-watering dish. I forewarn you that the pizza base is not at all dough or bread-like, but more of a crispy biscuit? It's simply beef above a biscuit, or crackers. But the beef was so delicious, a definite must-try. It cost about $14.90, quite a bomb eh but it's beef!

   Cha Kway Teow

My brother ordered a plate of Fried Kway Teow, and he kept complaining throughout the dinner that it tasted like Hor Fun instead. I tried a few mouthfuls and oh my, there were no visible egg, and there was gravy and sauce and it JUST TASTED LIKE HOR FUN! We told the waiter twice in order to ensure that they brought the right dish (because the restaurant was selling Hor Fun as well), and they kept insisting that it was Fried Kway Teow. I wouldn't recommend this dish for sure, because even if it was Hor Fun (or fried kway trow, for the matter), it tasted really really bad.

   Chicken

We also ordered a portion of chicken to share, and it was really huge, 3 people shared it together and couldn't finish it. The truffle fries that came alongside with it was very fresh perfected with a tangy marinate! It costs about $16.90.

   Truffle Fries

Because the truffle fries were so delicious, we decided to order another side dish of truffle fries to share. I have to emphasize that this is not your ordinary fries that you eat at fast-food restaurants or Swensens, etc. They must have a secret recipe because it's really good and it's not so oily *clap hands*! tongue

   Strawberry Cheesecake

They sell a wide variety of desserts as well and I believe it is made on-the-spot (not like those coffee joints where they keep it on the refrigerators for 4-days before throwing it away), with a little bit of artisan decorations that made it look really appetizing. So we got a Strawberry cheesecake, and not before long, it was devoured and was GONE! This is highly recommended even if you're not a fan of desserts. I guess it's something refreshing to taste! lol

Overall, we believe that the restaurant is great for its' ambience/environment, and the food was not all-that fantastic and the price was similar to Marche's. It's good for big family or friend gatherings, and not so for couple dating if you're more inclined towards having your taste buds delighting in good food!

The Coastal Settlement

I'm a big fans of vintage. I fell in love with this place, The Coastal Settlement (TCS). I went there during a weekend, and it was indeed the perfect kind of place to go to chit chat with friends. These place is like a place to take a break from hectic metropolitan lifestyle. Surrounded by vintage furniture and nostalgic architecture, The restaurant offers local and western cuisine. We went there for brunch.

The brunch menu is available on weekends and public holidays from 11am to 4pm.
Eggs benedict ($17) Eggs Benedict, which may be my favorite brunch dish, comes with two poached eggs, ham and spinach on top of English muffins, drizzled generously with Hollandaise sauce.

cheese burger ($26) 180g wagyu beef patty, it was pretty tender, topped with melted smoked cheddar cheese, sliced mushrooms, bacon strips, mesclun salad & fries. The buns were toasted lightly and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.

As for our dessert, the sea salt caramel cheesecake (oven baked cheesecake, sea salt caramel sauce $12) was pretty. However the sea salt cheesecake was far too salty for my preference.

Medicore food at steep prices
Cries 2012-09-21
Was wowed by a friend's description of the cafe and decided to check it out for dinner. Lovely ambience with fixtures and decor that's totally towards my liking for all things quaint and old-school. However, the food was definitely not up to expectation for its prices. We had the 2 dfferent types of soup, codfish fish and chips, fried chicken, sausage rosti and waygu burger. The codfish was totally off the mark. Because of the fact that it was codfish, we went for it despite the slightly steep price for a fish and chip dish, expecting it to be better than the typical one. It was tasteless! We could not even finish it despite us being people who do not adovcate food wastage. It was so bad we had to ask the waiter if they were sure it was codfish and he fumbled for awhile before replying us that it was codfish from some atlantic ocean -_- The fried chicken failed to deliver as a main dish as it was dry and not flavourful beyond its skin. The only dish that was satisfactory on a nomal expectation is the sausage rosti. We do not mind steep prices for good food but this was just very, very disappointing. Hope that the restaurant could review its food quality so as not to let its commendable efforts on the decor/restaurant setup go to waste, it is afterall a very lovely place to chill out at.

If you intend to check it the ambience here, would recommend brunch so you have a lower priced menu at risk, and there'll be a nice amt of daylight for some nice photo-taking.

Pancake dessert
Smile 2012-07-10
The desserts here always able to impress me with their really nice presentation and the generous amount of sweet items topped on it. The pancake has been baked till really nice golden brown colour, and the texture is smooth, light and filled with the fragrant from the butter used in it and with slight crunchiness on the outer surface too. The ice cream is also smooth and really creamy. The combination is definitely great and I would be back for more to try their other desserts as well.

A wonderful escapade with great food and setting
Smile 2012-05-01
Wah this place is simply.. paradise! Lol. Ok forgive the exaggeration but its been a loooooooooooooong time since im so satisfied and impressed with a place- great environment, superb food with no frustrating proportions, great great service, pretty interior designplus no pressure to rush... everything is just great for hanging out..but then again i didnt visit it on a weekend so that could be the place.. but other than that the place is really 2 thumbs up for me!

Ok firstly, I had bookmarked their website on my browser and we had been wanting to go but coz we dun drive n its at the faaaaaaar end of east we had the inertia... but becoz we had a 4 day weekend I finally suggesed we cycle there from east coast.. which is a good idea actually (if its not raining).

So we took abr 1.5 hours to cycle from east coast and the place is really just a bit further down from the village hotel so its not so difficult to find. We had skipped breakfast to eat here.. =P so i must first say we had ordered quite alot for 2 persons.. I had done my research n know that their portobello fries and truffle fries were must-try so i had chosen the lesser of the 2 evil. hehe. Wah its superbly good !! the portobello was so juicy and full of its natural goodness that u really dun need the truffled mayo but its special too.. portions are not big though.. just nice for 2 to share.. please order this if u go!!

The second side we had was the wings.. which was so-so.. so i wun really recommend it for the price.. and had 3 parts of drumlets n wings each.. The mains are the best... I had read before that their waygu burger was good so i told the angmo kia to take it but he was afraid its too much so he took the reuben sandiwich instead.. which was still wonderful! they are not stingy on the pastrami at all, and it had a small fresh rocket salad on the side.. mine was super wonderful.. with melting cheese, juicy roma toamatoes and ham.. was the cheese was really melting.. and wats more, i think actually 1 portion is good enough for 2 person to share.. i had doggy-bagged my last piece of sandwish.. the size was abt the length of a full baguette cut into 3 parts.. so imagine.. Mine came with the potatoe salad which i didnt touch (too much carbs but angmo kia ate half the portion).

The other thing that was a bit disappointing for me other than the wongs was the mocha. Being a huge coffee fan, I must say the coffee was abit too acidic for my liking and even the chocolate syrup wasnt able to mask it..

A word abt the great service- the restaurants has a few areas: restaurant, cafe, outdoors.. we sat at the cafe area first.. and after my bf had wanted to smoke n take a coffee outside so we requested to move and the guy who served us (I think fillipino, but no nametag or i wld write in to the boss for bouquets =)) did it so happily and helped us to move, even bringing us new glasses or water...arh.... good service.. i miss it in singapore.. I can tell u even some hotels dun do this.. so kudos!

The setting of the place is really really pretty with all sorts of vintage stuff... If i drove n stayed in the east this will definitely be my hangout!

We spent abt $90 in total- mocha, pineapple juice, double espresso, portobello fries, wings, 2 sandwiches. But remember, the huge portions for the mains. =)
