Introduction
Headed by brother and sister team, Jeff and Jenny Foo, Famous Kitchen, located at Sembawang had its humble beginnings, starting out as a zichar eatery 40 years ago. The duo has an avid interest in in F&B as their father worked as a Chef in the British army cookhouse in the mid-19th century. In 1979, Jeff, Jenny and their mother started a zichar seafood eatery specialising in scrumptious local-style seafood. In 2007, Changi Teochew Kitchen was established in Changi Village offering authentic Teochew delights. In 2008, Jeff and Jenny decided to rebrand the restaurant and it was renamed Famous Kitchen focusing on Nanyang cuisine and scrumptious seafood creations. The restaurant moved to Upper Thomson in 2009. In 2010, Famous Kitchen moved to its current location at Sembawang Road, Hong Heng Mansions. After spending 19 years in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and Korea , Jeff decided to return to Singapore to concentrate on the operations of Famous Kitchen. Many of the dishes were inspired by Jeff's travels around the region and were adjusted to cater to the palates of Singaporeans. Over the past 11 years, the restaurant has garnered many accolades and one of the notable ones was being recommended by the Michelin Guide 2019. continue reading

Nested along Sembawang Road, near Nee Soon, The Famous Kitchen is a Singapore style Chinese restaurant with live seafood. The restaurant have both inside and outside seatings. We chose to have the outside seating as the weather was great with the sky still bright in the early evening. The place was rather empty as we were there at about 5.30pm, not quite your usual dinner time yet.We ordered a plate of Salted Egg Pork Ribs ($12) and was surprised to see that it's rather different from the ones we normally see in Singapore. Usually the salted egg yolk is made into a sauce, but here at The Famous Kitchen, it's more like a topping of minced Salted Egg.I do taste salted egg yolk flavour being infused into the pork ribs though, so I guess it's probably marinated before being fried as well. Quite nice & something different.Garlic Stir Fry Kai Lan ($12)The Garlic Stir Fry Kai Lan here is quite fresh & crispy, lightly flavoured with chunks of garlic. A great palate cleanser. We also ordered Singapore iconic dish - Chili Crab at $58 for 850grams. Rather expensive in my opinion. The Chili Crab is great, but not exceptional. The sauce leans towards the spicier type and goes great with the small fried man tous ($3 for 6). Good thing is that the crab is very fresh & juicy. The service here is okay, there wasnt much customers around when I was there so they were pretty quick. But you can tell that the staffs here are trained to sell when they recommend you dishes and drinks, trying to get you to order more. Most of the seafood here are marked as seasonal prices, so you should probably find out more from the staff before ordering. continue reading

There's inside and outside sittings, the service here is one of the tip top services as there are a lot of waitresses around and they are very attentive. It is hard these days to enjoy such services. There are hits and misses, depend on what dish you order.Kang Kong here is good, nothing to complain about. The problem lie with the beancurd, the beancurd itself is tasteless - there's no flavour at all.Fu Rong Egg isn't a dish that stand out, just simply a dish that's o-k-a-y.The Assam Fish save it all! The Assam sauce is spicy and it is sour enough plus the fish is very fresh. But after having the sauce a few times, I just felt that it is too spicy but it was additive though. Maybe a little bit of sugar will aid, then it will be sweet, sour and spicy! You might want to explore The Famous Kitchen yourself, worth exploring. continue reading
