Nothing beats having the traditional local style big breakfast to kick starts your day. Good old traditional coffee, soft boiled eggs, thick kaya toast and French toast is what Tong Ah Eating House has been famous for. This old-school coffee shop has shifted from its symbolic red white three storeys building to a new shophouse which is a few doors down the same road. Tong ah has been operating its business since 1939.Right outside the coffee shop, there are only about two or three tables outside where you can slowly sip your kopi and munch on kaya toast. The rest of the seats are located inside the shop where it is supposed to be air-conditioned. But during our visit, it the air-con was down. Diners can choose to sit indoor or outdoor to enjoy their meal. Usually, the outdooreating is more popular as it is more cooling and carries a greater traditional vibe. Tong Ah also serves cze char dishes at the later part of the day. Aside from the traditional kopi which you can order to accompany the toast, the tea here is also very fragrant. The boss has been using Sri Lankan tea from the same supplier for decades and he makes a special effort to age the tea so as to develop greater flavour. My favourite item is French toast with kaya. Slices of bread were dipped into the egg mixture before grilling it. It was really fragrant. The egg covering was slightly crispy and soft in the inner. With the butter being placed on top of the toast, the heat from the bread melts it naturally. The kaya further value-add this dish. Unlikely the usual, it was not sweet and has a very thick texture (lumpy). White soft bread was steamed and sandwiched with butter and kaya mixture. It was really soft and “chewy”. Kaya and butter melting withinA traditional stylebreakfast is never complete without soft-boiled eggs with runny yolk as a side, and usually served with a dash of white pepper and dark soy sauce.Bf was in the mood for a heavy breakfast, so he also orders the traditional nasi lemak which is packed in the wrapped in pandan leaf in a triangle shaped packet.Within the pack, it consists of hot spicy sauce (sambal chilli), malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk, small anchovies (ikan bilis) and a small fried fish. For a taste of delight early in the morning, why not dropped by to have a try and immerse yourself in the traditional style coffeeshop. The moving of Tong Ah Eating House was all over the news sometimes back. Previously, Tong Ah Eating House stood out in its iconic red and white facade on a triangular plot of land in Keong Siak Road.Arguably serving the one of the best traditional Roti / Toasted Bread and coffee in Singapore, it was quite fortunate that Tong Ah still manage to relocate to its current place but just a few shophouses away from where they are originally from.Beverages were served in the traditional small cups with spoon. It was rather bland at the begining till I realised we have to stir and dissolve the sugar crystals at the bottom of the cup. Like wise for the cup of "Kopi O". Do remember to get your dose of traditional coffee here. While waiting for the traditional toasts, we had some Tau Sar Pau. Pau was fluffy and soft. The red bean paste fillings was not too sweet. Do you prefer to have the top most layer of the Pau removed? To perfect half boil eggs requires a good skill and Tong Ah Eating House definitely have it. Once cracked onto the plates giving, we find that the texture was perfect and of correct timing.Munching on such crispy kaya toasts reminds me of such simple food that can be so delicious which often we have been taken granted for. The traditional Kaya spread with butter melting upon landing at the heated toast was yummy! Having said so, thickness of the toasts were just alright, not too tick for the mouth. In the Morning Menu its all about the kind of traditional breakfast with toast, softboil egg and coffee and in the evening, it turn into a Cze Char Eating House with Coffee Crabs, Pork Ribs etc. Now that I have known about this, they have been jotted down into my "To-Go" for dinner places. continue reading

Decided to pop in to have a look after seeing all the newspaper clippings outside the glass door. Coffee.. very nice. We ordered kopi gao (thick).. and it was so smooth and fragrant , a tad too sweet otherwise, not much complaints. As for the kaya and french toast, toast (we ordered just kaya without butter) was just average, nothing too spectacular. The toast was really eggy and the kaya was quite hard to spread... hmm... not too good. The taste of kaya was good, strong pandan coconut flavour but I didn't like the texture at all, not smooth! http://missmehhh.wordpress.com/2014/08/31/a-little-nostalgia/ continue reading

I Love Tong Ah, one of my favourite places for Tze Char. Cheap and good and in a convenient location! This was recommended by the channel 8 programme, CHU ChaO Lai Le. Pretty good with a relatively large piece of scallop in it and I cant remember what else. This is my favourite amongst all the dishes. Jia Xiang Tou Fu! Soft and silky on the inside and crispy on the outside. Love the egginess of the toufu! Topped with Chai Po, chili bits and mince pork, this dish is simple but wonderful! This is the claypot Kam Hiong chicken. I cant remember what is kam hiong in englishSambal kang kongSweet and Sour Pork is pretty ordinary continue reading

For dinner, I had the seafood hor fun located at Tong Ah Eating House in Chinatown. It costs $4 for a plate which I feel was worth the money as it was delicious. The hor fun was well fried accompanied by the delicious gravy which was neither too oily nor salty. The coffee shop is quite crowded in the evenings and there might be a queue. continue reading
