Was feeling thirsty after walking around the mall, at first i wanted to order Starbucks but I changed my mind and headed over to Wang Cafe which was opposite of Starbucks. I heard from few of my friends that Wang cafe serves great coffee in the past but did not have the chance to try out. I was thinking why not i make use of this chance to try it out myself. I went inside to the cafe and i did not know where did the queue starts. Then, I just stood behind a lady which seems to be queuing up. When I thought it was my turn to order, I told the auntie, i would like to order a cup of ice kopi with less sugar. She looked at me and raised her voice, "ORDER FROM THERE HORH, NOT HERE" . I was stunned as it made me feel so embarrassed. I was unhappy with the bad attitude and the impoliteness of that staff. Even though their coffee is great but if the staff continues to show such a manner, it just ruins the image of Wang Cafe and no one would like to patronise it again. No matter what, I would still go back and patronise to Wang Cafe for their coffee drinks but definitely not the outlet at Bukit Panjang. Ice Kopi with lesser sugar- $2.30 continue reading

Located at a bustling corner opposite Starbucks, this traditional café is one of my favourite breakfast outlets just a stone throw away from our place. If you are craving for a simple kaya toast and a cup of teh to start your day, this is the place to go! However, do note that service is really at the bare minimum standard, if any, and this is definitely not the place for you to chill. The husband ordered his usual Set 1 ($4.50 nett) comprising of 2 slices of Kaya Butter Toasts, 2 soft-boiled eggs and a cup of teh. As for me, I decided to order their festive set ($3.00 nett) comprising of 2 slices of Peanut Butter Toasts and a cup of teh-O.Compared to Toast Box, Wang’s kaya butter toast wins hands down – both in terms of quantity (1 vs 2 slices of toasts) and quality (smoothness and fragrances of kaya). The traditional Hainanese toasts, sandwiching Wang’s signature kaya and thin butter slices, was toasted to perfection, good ol' kopitiam style . However, the Peanut Butter Toasts I had were pretty average and lacked the crunchy satisfying kick of Toast Box’s classic peanut butter, enough said. Guess it’s pretty clear where you should head to for your next weekend breakfast indulgence depending on whether you craving for kaya or peanut butter toast continue reading

While my makan mate & I love Starbucks' exotic brews & fancy frappucinos & free wifi, there are days when we crave old fashioned butter kaya toast. Today is one of those days when we gave a cold shoulder to Starbucks, activated our hps' data & patronized the sullen, snappy obasan at Wang Cafe, cramped around a tiny sticky table to enjoy our coffee & toast. The 'kopi C siu dai' ie coffee with less sugar & a few drops of evaporated milk is only 2/3 the volume of Starbucks Tall coffee but it met our needs for a mid afternoon caffeine shot. The toast arrived a good 10mins after we picked up our kopi and it was brown and toasty with the usual 5g of butter & the coconutty kaya that we ate as kids. We would glady cough up 10¢ or 20¢ more for a few more drops of milk in our kopi C, or for just a wee bit more of kaya on our toast, but obasan@Wang would have none of that. So be it, and before we could even post our photo on OpenRice.com, our plates & cups were being cleared away by the sourpuss. continue reading

Wang is one of the two local cafes that are my favourites.Drinks - Their coffee and tea are well prepared and tastes rich and authentic. The coffee blend is fragrant and freshly brewed (i.e. no sour coffee!). The coffee-c and teh-c is nicely made, not the bland and diluted types. Food - the mee siam is quite nice, not too sour. Mee rebus is rather dissappointing as it is too spicy! Service - friendly. The aunties working here are more friendly than the foreign talents working at their Suntec branch. A little dissapointing is their recent price increase. continue reading
