We were going around Central, when suddenly we spotted Watami, a restaurant with quite long queue. We assume this restaurant should be good, so we joined the line for our dinner.Iced Milk Tea - $2.30I know it sounds peculiar for ordering milk tea in a Japanese restaurant. Indeed, my milk tea wasn't very satisfying, it was a bit diluted.Ishiyaki Beef Pepper Rice - $9.80This dish is similar to Pepper Lunch's Beef Pepper Rice. It seemed like they put more beef slices as compared to Pepper Rice (hence the higher price). The stone pot was super hot that it caused the rice to be charred easily when I stopped stirring.Watami Tonkotsu Ramen - $14.80ramen in special pork bone soup with pork slicesThe pork bone soup was so delicate. The onsen tamago still had a bit of runny texture, I prefer this version to Ajisen Ramen's solid one. The chashu could have been bigger though hehe.Salmon & Avocado Roll Sushi - $13.80I never am a fan of raw salmon. This was my friend's order. I only tried one piece and didn't want anymore. Raw salmon is just bleurgh... For me it tastes like papaya in a much worse way.Maccha Ice Cream - $3.60Not really a fan of Watami's maccha ice cream coz it had a rather icy texture (not soft).Overall, it was a good dinner. Service was quite slow and it's hard to grab the staffs' attention. Oh ya, it has a wonderful night view facing the river, if you're lucky enough to get a seat next to the glass window. For more reviews, kindly visit http://ariellacahya.blogspot.com continue reading

I ate at the Raffles City branch a few years back and remembered the food and service to be pretty good. However, last night's meal at the Central branch makes me feel that the standard has dropped vastly. Either that or it's just this branch that needs major improvements. I ordered the Self-grilled Beef Steak set ($29) for myself, which consists of the beef, rice, miso soup, salmon sashimi (3 slices), chawanmushi, sliced cucumber appetizer, cold tofu and a wedge of orange. Here's why I was pretty unhappy with my meal (everything added up and made the experience quite unpleasant).1) The cup that my plain water came in had a lipstick mark on it. When I told a waitress about it, she didn't apologize or say anything, just nodded her head and gave me another cup. Surely you should apologize for using a dirty cup?2) The beef steak was served on a hot plate and lo and behold...the hot plate wasn't...hot. Yes, you heard me right. It was only slightly hot and the temperature dropped before I could finish cooking all the sliced beef. The beef slices are thin and the fact that all of them were still quite red on one side shows how un-hot the plate was. I didn't complain because the staff were all very nonchalant and I could make do with medium rare slices. 3) My set includes chawanmushi but I think there wasn't enough chawanmushi at that time so they served my set without it, which is fine but they should have informed me. I only realized it after a while and asked them how come the chawanmushi was left out, and the waiter said they will serve it to me later. However, nearing the end of my meal, it still hadn't come so I checked with them. After I finished my meal, it still wasn't here so I asked them about it again. We waited for about 10 mins and the chawanmushi was finally out. Even then, it wasn't very nice as the egg was really really soft, as though too much water was added or it wasn't steamed long enough.Next to us was this guy who also repeatedly asked the staff for his sushi roll because he had waited really really long for it (I was there later than him and I also waited reallyyyy long for my food to come, and even then, my set came earlier than his sushi roll).Because of all that I had encountered last night, I'm very sure that I will not be coming back again, at least to this outlet. Hope their management sees this and will do something to improve their standards. continue reading

This hot plate dish is my favourite and a must order dish when I visit here. Is basically generous portion of yellow thick noodles stir fried with fresh juicy pork and sweet crunchy shrimps. And it is topped with fragrant thick Japanese dark sweet sauce that make it really delicious. For the price of $10.80 is quite affordable. Restaurant is cosy and comfortable and service is quite nice and fast too. continue reading

Purposely went there for our dessert, Watami was the best place to have affordable Japanese Cuisine. The waiting time for queuing was acceptable for me, but my friend showed impatient face. Staff who served us was friendly and tried her best to cheer us up, attitude was good. Delicious Danish bread filling with fresh fruits and chilled ice-cream, it was an exciting taste. The dough was fluffy and chewable topping, it was perfectly matched to each other. Suitable sharing among two person, dessert always makes us happy. Generally healthy and guilt-free, it costed at $8.30. continue reading

I remembered there was a period of time i was quite crazy about Watami. Not that its food was superb, but more for the value and variety. Amongst the casual Jap restaurant chains I must say Watami still wins my heart. I think I didn't come for about a year and was glad to find one in the Clarke Quay area where I was supposed to meet my friend.Well firstly, expect the place to be crowded as due to its value, many large gatherings occur here and this isnt the first time I have noticed this. This time round, we witnessed a corporate dinner with about 20 Japanese beside us taking up the row of 4-5 tables. For food, I tried one of their new offerings-- Beancurd roll with avocado and prawns. I really loved it because I love beanskin and the dish was very fresh. In fact, it reminded me of the viet fresh spring rolls. However, there fillings were not very generous as I felt like i only tasted a small piece of avocado in one of the portions.Salad was good because the sesame sauce is super addictive. I feel like its something i can eat everyday. There were slices of teriyaki chicken and tuna mayo. =)I guess I will go back to Watami very very soon again. =) continue reading
