Claypot Goodness – Hot to the Last Chew
2014-03-13
Hidden in the serene neighbourhood of Serangoon is a little stall that specializes in claypot delights. However, do not be fooled by the quiet surroundings! By dinner time, Lau Wang Claypot Delights is buzzing with customers all waiting to get a taste of those claypot goodness.
The benefit of claypot dishes? – The food retains the heat within the pot throughout the meal, so every bite is piping hot as though it came straight off the stove. A week ago, our lucky OpenRicers had a feast of different dishes ranging from herbal to spicy sambal base.
Clockwise from top right:
Sesame Chicken, Frog Leg Herbal Soup, Sambal Seafood and Sambal Kang Kong.
The Sesame Chicken is a signature item at Lau Wang and we can certainly see why. Tender cuts of boneless chicken are soaked in good quality sesame oil overnight to intensify its flavour before cooking. Then, dried chilies are added for that extra kick and the sauce goes rather well with rice –definitely a favourite amongst the members. The Frog Leg Herbal Soup was a very refreshing item amidst the strong flavours of sambal and ginger dishes. Fresh frog legs are used and the meat was tender yet springy. On top of that, the gentle flavours of the herbal soup made us think of mom’s homemade soup. The Sambal Seafood is a spicy medley of prawns, sotong, fish, mushroom, crabsticks and lady fingers. This is one hearty dish that can be shared among friends and it gives you the best variety of ingredients cooked in their sambal base. Shiok! Of course we can’t and won’t forget our daily dose of vegetables. The Sambal Kang Kong is similar to the stir-fry version but with more sauce that was kept sizzling by the claypot. Never eat cold kang kong again!
Next up was the Sliced Fish with Bittergourd, which has a ginger and spring onion base. Fresh and generous slices of fish complimented the black sauce well, while the aromatic mix of spices and tang of bittergourd uplifted the otherwise heavier sauce – one of our recommended dishes to try. And the more exotic dish of the night was the Liver & Kidney. However, the sauce masks the gamey taste of the offal so don’t be afraid of trying this out!
It was a night of hearty, delightful claypot satisfaction and everyone left the tasting feeling very full. Do visit Lau Wang Claypot Delights for tasty food with that homemade touch.
