Let’s cheer for England!
Upon entering Oriole Café & Bar, my friends and I were greeted by a huge England flat hanging above the bar counter. I knew I was in for a treat as there would be a match with Slovenia against England. After I got seated, there were many people streaming in the café bar and filling up the seats probably also to catch England “live” in action on the indoor projection screen.
Caffeine boost, anyone?
I was thinking what if I fall asleep during the match as I’m not a night person. Luckily for me, Oriole Café and Bar serves freshly grounded coffee so I can stay up during all the World Cup matches. With coffee within my reach, I can always get my kick of caffeine boost after the kick off and not worry about falling asleep.
Very soon, the clock struck 10pm and the match between Solvenia and England have started. My friends and I are fans of England and so we will be cheering for them. We ordered a carafe of Ori-Ole for us to share.
Ori-Ole ($38 /carafe)
The Ori-Ole was served in a tall glass bottle and it’s suitable for 3 or more people to share. There were mint leaves served in the glass to give a refreshing pulse to wake up your sense so that you can start cheering, “Ole-ole-ole for England!!”
Just at the 6th minute of the match, Solvenia’s striker Valter Birsa launch a left footed shot towards the goal post of England but England’s goal keeper, David James, saved the goal!! Everybody cheered as the goalkeeper defended the ball well goal early in the game.
We celebrated the nice save by ordering a Golden Goalie and dedicated it to David James for not disappointing their England fans.
“Golden Goalie” Cheesy Beef Meatballs ($12++)
The cheesy beef meatballs came with tangy tomato base sauce and topped with a layer of delectable cheese. The beef meatballs were very flavoursome and it’s definitely a good ball saved right down my stomach.
Not long into the 22nd minute of the game, England’s striker Jermain Defoe, shot a right footed goal into Slovenia’s goalpost and scored a goal!! Everybody in Oriole Café & Bar shouted loudly in great excitement including us who have been absorbed into the atmosphere of thrill all around.
The match went on shortly after and at the 39th minute; Bojan Jokic of Solvenia committed a fowl and was given a yellow card for it. Fans of England jeered at Bojan’s fowl play.
“Fowl Play” Crispy Chicken Bites ($8++)
We were hungry and It was about half time too so we ordered Fowl Play crispy chicken bites to sneer at Bojan’s first yellow card in the game. The chicken bites went well with the mustard mayo sauce and it was great to have bites to munch on during the half time break.
At the 62nd minute, Slovenia’s Bojan Jokic committed a foul again with the referee awarding England a free kick taken by Steven Gerrard. Now this is another chance for England to score the second goal and will it come true? Immediately after kicking off the free kick from the corner of the field, Wayne Rooney tried heading the ball into the goal post of Slovenia but failed. The Slovenia player defended the header by kicking the ball out of the field which awarded England another free kick.
Although the header failed to score England the second goal, we ordered The Header as we were hungry for some food which was more filling for our stomach.
“The Header” Spicy Chicken Hotdog ($12++)
We have to say that the spicy chicken hotdog was great as its topped with bacon bits and mayo. We could feel the thrill going through us as Rooney did the header which almost scored a goal.
Nearing the end of the game, at the 78th and 80th minute, we felt that Slovenia’s players were playing rough to equalize the match as England was leading 0 – 1. Both Slovenia players, Valter Birsa and Zlatko Dedic committed fowl and were award a yellow card on both instances. Fans of England in Oriole were very unhappy as only a yellow card was given and demanded the referee to give them a red card.
It’s not like the referee is able to hear them so we decided ourselves to give Slovenia a carafe of Red Card instead.
Red Card ($38 /carafe)
When our drinks arrive, we announced “for Slovenia!” and started to sip on it. Fellow England fans cheered loudly. It tasted of raspberries, strawberries and some vodka in it. The tinge of sourness reminds me of how players feel when a red card is awarded.
After the referee blew the whistle which concluded the end of the match, England fans cheered loudly at their 0 – 1 victory over Slovenia. The atmosphere of Oriole Café & Bar was overwhelmed with joy and happiness. To our surprise, the manager sounded the “Air Horn Alert” and announces special promotion for all their beers!!
Soon, many are calling out orders for beer and it was a great night having conversations with new found friends who are also fellow fans of England. All of us held up our glasses of ice cold beer and wished that England all the best for all upcoming matches in the World Cup.
It was surely a fun-filled night to celebrate the victory with beer and World Cup inspired food and drinks on their menu with fellow football fans. If you’re looking for a place to satisfy your taste buds while watching “live” World Cup matches, you’ve got to be at this exciting place.
