must-try durian treats
To the delight of many Singaporeans, the wait for the highly-anticipated Durian Season is finally over. The “King of the Fruit” however, has its fair share of haters and lovers, and for the latter, it’s no surprise we’ll see them licking those durian-stained finger tips so very often these few months. Our team at OpenRice has identified some rather interesting variations for the season so if you (we mean durian-lovers) are already salivating at the sound of Crispy Durian Ice Cream or Durian Crème Brulee, then join us for the ride!

1. Fried Durian

What Adeline says: For just $2, this is not bad. The batter is super crispy. Served hot, this combination is quite lethal. Where to get it: Tangs Market, Tangs Plaza, 310 Orchard Road, Basement 1, Singapore 238864

2. Spike D

What Fiona says: It looks like a nondescript chocolate dome cake at first glance, but you know what they say; do not judge a book by its cover. Cutting it up reveals a heavenly durian filling. Chocolate AND durian?! What better way to get the best of both worlds? (If you don't already know, those two make a wonderful combination.) Where to get it: Toby's - The Dessert Asylum, Parkway Parade, 80 Marine Parade Road #02-68/69/70, Singapore 449269 (Image from http://purple-eats.blogspot.sg)

3. Durian Pancake

What Serena says: Interesting combination! Crispy and hot on the outside, cold and soft durian paste for the filling inside. A perfect choice for a take-and-go snack! Where to get it: Four Seasons Durians, Ngee Ann City, 391 Orchard Road #B2 (Takashimaya Food Hall), Singapore 238873

4. Durian Swiss Roll

What Si Jia says: You can already taste the fleshy durian chunks within the filling at the very first bite! The combination of the fluffy sponge cake and the authentic D24 durian filling at this famous traditional bakery really packs a punch. Where to get it: Rich & Good Cake Shop, 24 Kandahar Street, Singapore 198887 (Image from Openrice user Jellylovesfood)

5. Crispy Durian Ice Cream

What Jescelin says: Resting atop a bed of tangy mango sauce is a rich, Mao Shan Wang ice cream encapsulated in a hot crispy batter. Durian bits contribute to the texture of each bite, making this a must-try for everybody. Where to get it: Majestic Restaurant, New Majestic Hotel, 31-37 Bukit Pasoh Road, Singapore 089845 (Image taken from http://www.restaurantmajestic.com)

6. Durian Martabak

What Yi Wen says: While its neither piping hot nor cold to the taste, this Indonesian-style pancake with D24 durian paste makes for a hearty dessert to share with fellow durian lovers out there. Beyond its crisp exterior, the soft mash of pancake and durian is absolutely comforting. Top it off by washing it down with their Happy Soda. Where to get it: Jtown Cafe, Midpoint Orchard, 220 Orchard Road, #B1-04/05, Singapore 238852

7. Durian Creme Brulee

What Eunice says: The Duriancanboleh ($7) is a velvety, luscious and creamy concoction with a nicely-caramelized shell. Each spoonful is heavenly in your mouth, and the durian is not too overpowering. Where to get it: The Quarters, 16 Enggor St, #01-09, Singapore 079717 (Image from The Quarters Facebook page)

8. Durian in Sticky Rice Roll

What Charmaine says: A cold snack that is made from a thin, grainy coat of sticky rice enwrapping soft, supple durian. The “lightness” of the sticky rice tempers with the pungent sweetness of the durian, such that the dish is well balanced in taste and texture. Where to get it: Ji De Chi, 8 Liang Seah St, #01-03, Singapore 189029 (Image from http://mydeartummy.com)

9. Durian Cupcake

What Mandy says: Their cupcakes are fluffy and rich without being overwhelming, and I like that they don’t add fondant or icing to their cupcakes as well. Their limited edition Durian Cupcakes come fresh and pungent – which, as any durian lover will know, are prerequisites for great taste. Where to get it: Cupcake Engineer, Cluny Court, 501 Bukit Timah Rd, #01-03A, Singapore 259760 (Image from http://www.cupcakeengineer.com.sg)

10. Durian Rainbow Ice Cream Cake

What Kaeting says: This rainbow cake ($11.75) looks so pretty, when I saw it I told myself I had to try it. It has a thin layer of rainbow sponge over an arched-shaped D24 durian ice-cream. The durian flavour in the ice cream is very rich, was so happy that it tastes as great as it looks! Where to get it: Deli, Goodwood Park Hotel, 22 Scotts Road, Singapore 228221

11. Durian Pizza
