Penang Kitchen, the Place to Visit for Authentic Penang Cuisine
2013-11-04
Craving for true blue Penang cuisine? Now, you can have a taste of its authentic dishes at Penang Kitchen, a restaurant in the heartland of Singapore that serves specialties from one of the foodie destinations in Malaysia.
Penang Kitchen branch along Tanjong Katong
Penang Kitchen is a popular food haunt for locals and celebrities. Currently, there are 2 branches in Singapore - one at Bukit Timah and the other within the food haven of Katong. We brought our OpenRicers to the Katong outlet for a Food Tasting session to savour some of the signatures they have to offer. We also found out more about Penang Kitchen from the owner, Stella Lim, and her team of experienced chefs.
Chef Lex greeting our OpenRicers in the cosy, family-style restaurant
The restaurant’s ambience has a homey feel with a warm, cosy touch accented by vibrant orange walls and bricks. Before the food was served, the chef explained the menu as well as the food photos adorning the wall. After the brief speech, we could sense that the members couldn’t wait to try the food.
Hearty and delectable starters like the Penang Fruit Rojak and Penang Asam Laksa
The members had quite a good selection of Penang favourites for the evening. Tickling our taste buds, the refreshing Penang Fruit Rojak (top right) was very addictive with the appetising mix of six different types of fruits which include the green apples, jambu and mango. Also, we sank our teeth into the tasty golden brown texture of the lor bak and balacan wings of the Penang Sampler (left). Of course, Penang Cuisine won’t be complete without Asam Laksa (bottom right) which packs a tangy flavour from the generous amount of sardines infused with fresh spices. Another notable Penang dish which our members enjoyed was the Penang Char Kway Teow (right center) - ‘wok hei’ to perfection that is savoury instead of sweet.
Mouth-watering main courses like the Nasi Goreng Kampong Penang was the top favourite
Chef’s Nasi Goreng Kampong Penang (bottom left) caught our member’s by surprise as it seemed very ordinary at first glance. However, the mild spicy unami from the belacan struck the chord of our palate as it went very well with the homemade acar. The Penang Prawn Noodle Soup (bottom right) is another Penang specialty not to be missed; it comes with tender slices of lean pork and flavoursome soup. Last but not least, we savoured the chef’s traditional recipe of Herbal Duck Mee Sua (top) which has to be well-cooked herbs for 6 hours to produce such a rich broth.
Cold and warm desserts to conclude the dinner with a sweet note
A meal of Penang cuisine will not be complete without Chendol (left) topped with fresh gula melaka that is imported from Penang. Instead of the dried ones with an overwhelming sweetness for some people, this version isn’t as rich and leaves a light lingering sensation. The dessert lovers enjoyed the Almond Tang Yuan (right) for it doesn’t have the overpowering almond flavor in the soothing paste texture. It comes with glutinous rice balls filled with choice of peanut or sesame.

It was an exceptional meal for our OpenRicers after the Food Tasting session
It was an evening of fun, food and enjoyment as our OpenRicers had a great time at Penang cuisine. We would like to thank Stella, owner of Penang Kitchen as well as her team of chefs and service staff for such a wonderful evening!
