Hainanese Delicacy

Chicken rice is probably one of the favourite Singaporean dish & yes, it is my favourite as well. However, i am rather picky over this "simple-looking dish". I love the fragrance of garlic in the chicken rice, the tenderness of the chicken and also the not so msg flavoured chicken soup that comes together. Sadly, i can't seem to find all this in this famous Hainanese Delicacy. Personally, i felt that it taste only so-so. It was not worth for the waiting time, i thought. I chanced upon this Hainanese Chicken Rice eatery when I was searching for my lunch at Far East Plaza.There was no menu at this eatery. You ordered your meals with the lady boss. Service was okay though sometimes the lady boss was a little grouchy. My order of White Chicken rice came quite fast. At $4, the serving of meat was quite big.The chicken meat had sesame oil aroma. Was having lunch here last week, ordered a mixed chicken meat, chicken organs, vegetable and a salted vegetable duck soup.The chicken is tasty and meat is tender especially their roasted chicken as is perfectly well roast. As for the organs, nothing special on it as is boil with water and added with the sauce over it. Vegetable is crispy and fresh and they are generous in giving the fried onions. My daughter introduced me to this chicken rice stall at far east plaza. It can get quite crowded during lunch time so we went there slighter earlier to beat the crowd. Once seated, the dishes are served very quickly. We ordered each a one person's set which costs $4. I like white chicken but there is also roast chicken available. The set comes with dark soy sauce, homemade chilli dip and blended ginger paste.The rice is not too oily and it is very fragrant. I added some of the ginger paste and chilli to it and wow it is really really good. The chilli is spicy enough and it makes the rice very yummy, until I finished the entire plate before I finish my plate of chicken. Service is always fast and efficient here so that there will be a higher turnover of customers since it is always crowded during mealtimes. The chicken was very tender and marinated well. I find that the sauce is a little salty though. The rice was also very fragrant and not oily. One of the best Chicken rice i had! It is located at far east plaza (FEP). Shopaholic should take note of this place as you can filled your stomach with yummy and cheap chicken rice after shopping at FEP. The rice is very fragrant and not very oily which make me feel less sinful. The chicken is tender and above average as compared to the chicken of other chicken ice stalls. Lastly, I'm in love with their chilli! The spice is just nice for me and it taste really delicious with the chicken. Adding the egg cost another 50 cents more. Being a typical Singaporean, I love my chicken rice. Not chicken rice in general but Hainanese Chicken Rice. The dish is simple; bite-sized pieces of steamed white chicken, fragrant rice, light or dark soy sauce, and a delicious ground chilli and ginger paste.And to get my fix of the nation's favorite dish, i just have to head on to Hainanese Delicacy which is a stone throw away from my office. Unlike other Singaporeans, I dont like to que. So lunch hour, they're pretty packed and you could see a que of at least 10 pax by 12.30. So best is to order for a take-away. I asked for white chicken with rice and additional braised egg which cost a 50 cents more. Which to me is reasonable. I would have guessed that they gave me half an egg but they gave me in full! Hainanese Delicacy is the place where I will always visit this place for lunch as I will always be craving for their delicious chicken and rice. The chicken is tasty and really tender while the rice is really fragrant. This is the nicest so far that I have tried which none can be compared. The chicken will be soaked in the sauce and serve together with some cucumbers at the bottom. And they always pick the ripped cucumbers so I really enjoy eating the cucumbers because it is always really crunchy and do not have the bitter after-taste. I went back again to have the chicken rice with my friends. We ordered 3/4 chicken to share and a mix of roasted and white chicken. For 4 person it was just nice but we regretted not ordering one whole chicken because we are hungry for more meat. Since we are trying both types of the chicken, I prefer the roasted one and the skin is better tasting as compared to the white chicken. We also ordered the salted duck soup. So much that my group of friends are discussing about the Hainanese chicken rice. And as I'm around the corner, I thought of trying my luck again, hoping that this time round I can have a taste of the well-liked Hainanese delicacy located in Far East Plaza. The shop was packed as usual and since we are dining as a pair, we were directed to shared a table with others. The layout concept of the restaurant reminds me of those Hong Kong "Shao Lao" (Roasted Delights) shops, squeezy yet packed and with the kitchen "viewable" to their customers. The guy was friendly and polite with order taken promptly after we settled down. I felt quite comfortable even though I'm sitting on the stool and sharing table with a family with his hospitality. Food was served within a minute after the order. WAO! That was fast! The plate of boneless white chicken was not as oily as I expected. With Chinese parsley garnishing its top and filled with a bed of sliced proportionately cut cucumber at its bottom. The chicken meat is tender on the average standard and nothing much in particular, not forgetting that the chicken rice is soft and not as oily as well. The stirred fried Xiao Bai Cai with fried shallots is not oily too. Salted Vegetables and duck soup was rather salty. When I decided to write this review, I realised with a start that I have been patronising this stall since I was 12! It was one of the places my friends and I would end up having our meals after school before proceeding to while away our youth in the shopping complexes in town, doing nothing in particular.This is probably not going to be the tastiest chicken rice but that's exactly what I like about it. The chicken is always tender and doused with a good scoopful of light broth and the rice is always fragrant. You won't get that guilty feeling you often do after a plate of chicken rice elsewhere. The chilli also hits the right spot with a good level of spiciness and taste. Also, don't forget to give the duck soup with salted vegetables a go.I will probably come by at off-peak hours because it tends to get crowded but it also is an experience in itself to drop by at the stall's busiest period. Suggest having chicken rice in Orchard and there is a high chance the shop would get mentioned, if not in the same breath as Chatterbox at Mandarin Orchard. Located on level 5 of Far East Plaza, the stall is spartan, with coffee shop-style furnishings. Packed as it is during meal hours, it might get a tad claustrophobic for those sitting in the tight confines at the far end of the restaurant.Diners can opt to order single portions or half/whole chicken to be shared. There is also the choice of roast chicken or the traditional hainanese chicken with it's oily, slightly more fatty skin. Together with a colleague, we ordered a plate of roast chicken rice each and a side of bean sprouts.The Verdict: Hainanese Delicacy might be another case of the product not living up to the hype. Far East Plaza is a stone's throw away from my workplace and I often frequent it for lunch. I've never got to try the famous 'Hainanese Delicacy' chicken rice, though. That is, until yesterday.It's really super crowded at lunchtime but I was lucky to get a seat quickly -the service staff are actually quite friendly. Never really expected them to have good service because it's so crowded and they have so many customers to attend to. But honestly, I was quite surprised :) I was ushered to a corner seat, and to be honest, I felt super claustrophobia, squeezed in that tight corner. But for a quick lunch, I guess it was alright. I ordered a Roasted Chicken rice (breast meat) with a plate of beansprouts to share, for $6 in total per person.The chicken rice was surprisingly not as fragrant nor oily as I'd expected...mediocre at best. The breast meat was slightly dry, but the sauce made it quite delicious, especially when doused with their chilli, ginger and dark sauce combo. I'm very picky when I order breast meat I don't want any bone or any part of the chicken apart from the breast. They fulfilled this request quite well so no complaints here! The chilli sauce was slightly less watery than the usual chicken rice chilli, and really packed a punch. I liked the chilli :)The beansprouts were nothing special, in soy sauce and oil, garnished with fried shallots and spring onion. It provides contrast to the otherwise meaty dish and its crunch is very much welcome. The beansprouts weren't overcooked too. Fantastic! A quick tip though: you may want to mix it thoroughly before eating if not the top beansprouts are relatively tasteless while those at the bottom are too salty. Have heard so much about the chicken rice at far east plaza, so I decided to visit this place for a quick meal. Place is packed since it is lunch time for office people nearby so I waited for quite a while before getting a seat (the shop is quite small so most probably you need to share table with other customers) Ordered the steam chicken breast (single portion) and it is served separately with the rice. I have a certain expectation for chicken rice.... This place certainly does not disappoint me for anything... I went to lunch with a few of my colleagues and we headed over to this place for lunch for a change...We ordered 1 whole chicken with half white and half roasted.... Simply awesome.... The taste of the chicken was not as raw like some places have it and the rice was fragrant...
