Haven't been patronising Sakae sushi for quite a long while. I decided to order something for dinner after seeing there is no crowd on a monday. I ordered a Sakae salad, a soft shell crab wrap and a unagi maki. Boy I was disappointed with the food quality...the standard has plummeted since my previous visit. The soft shell crab wrap wasn't even wrapped properly, all the ingredients were falling apart when I tried to pick it up with my chopsticks. Taste wise nothing to rave about. The unagi maki looked real good on the menu but when I saw the tiny slice of eel only partially covering the top of the maki....I knew I will be disappointed. Indeed, it tasted mediocre. The Sakae salad was also a disappointment with a rojak mix of salmon slices, crab sticks, tamago strips, wakame and some greens. The salad dressing was too overpowering with wasabi taste...I really did not enjoy this dish and couldn't finish it in the end.I shall stay away from this joint for a much longer time..Read More

Well, it's the sushi place nearest to us, so we frequent it often. However, their claim to be authentic is unfounded because of several reasons. Like how there's too much rice, the fish not being fresh enough, the cancellation of gyoza, etc..Not to say they are all bad, there are merit points too. I can always tell when they are putting in effort to be creative. This particular branch also plays the best selection of Japanese songs from a certain J-POP queen and groups of a certain male artiste agency.I like their Chawanmushi because it is smooth! There are some unique sushi that I like, too, like the pieces of Unagi gunkan, fried salmon skin gunkan among others. One suggestion could be to lessen the rice, because authentic sushi does not have so much rice. I should write a review for a certain conveyor belt sushi restaurant from Taiwan, lol~I recommend only those living in Seng Kang who are desperate for a quick fix of sushi cravings. Otherwise..... Frankly speaking, I never associate Sakae Sushi with the term 'authentic japanese food' or 'good sushi'.First of all their sushi - Selection was okay but the taste are quite average too.I find it no difference between the $1.19 sushi I had at Nihon Mura few days back and the current $2.30++ per plate at Sakae. Perhaps in terms of selection, Sakae offers more variety. I'm not a big eater for sushi. A normal 4 to 5 plates is more than enough for me usually.Opting for a sushi buffet is not a very wise choice. But for big eaters I think this is the place to make your bucks worth it.Apart from sushi, I also tried some of their ramen.Their presentation was pleasant - served in an oversized bowl. But the taste and broth failed badly.Ramen texture was below average, broth was plain (Taste more like MSG water to me) \.Overall, not a good place if you want to have ramen.
