I wouldn't come back specially for this, especially when it's always so crowded.

The soup of the day at 49 Seats that day was the tomato soup. Densely packed with sour tomato brew and topped with a lavish amount of parsley leaves, this soup can be considered as one of the better ones. These days I seem to enjoy tomato soups more than mushroom soups.

I ordered their Creamy Smoked Duck Pasta because I couldn't forget the smoked duck from Sneakery Cafe and was waiting for something to top it. This pasta from 49 Seats was mediocre, the smoked duck was tough to bite and dry too. The carbonara cream base was also quite jarring on the appetite. Rubbery can be the best adjective to describe the pasta noodles. It definitely did not settle well with me.

The Beef Bolognaise Pasta, though a cliche choice, was slightly more edible. The pasta wasn't cooked al dente but overcooked to limpidness. At least the beef bolognaise sauce was quite tasty, except that it was a little watery. Both choices of pasta turned out to be pretty disappointing, and it made me regret not choosing their signature Tom Yum Seafood Pasta.

The alscampi sauce is a creamy seafood sauce and it sure was good, thats why it is so expensive ($16.90), because the normal fish & chips is only $12.90 and serving is much bigger too. Adding the sauce to the grilled fish added more flavor and oomph to it, but one of the prawns wasnt too fresh. The fish & chips with alscampi sauce was delicious but I find it slightly pricey. Changing my fries to cheese fries was an extra $1.50.

Chicken chop with mushroom sauce comes with two sides, chose the cheese fries and mash potato. The chicken is soft and tender with a rich and goodness packed mushroom sauce. Thumbs up!

One minus point is the cafe don't provide complimentary ice water, which so many cafes does. I understand that there is no service charge (there are many cafes with no service charge too but they provide ice water), after all it is just ice water and doesn't cost much, it makes dining more pleasant especially when eating fried western food. Of course we can order drinks but sometimes drinks don't quench as well as plain water.

I ordered the creamy smoked duck spaghetti ($10.50) and as a person who does not like/eat creamy based pasta frequently, I must say this one at 49 seats is really not bad. I didn't feel sick of it after a few mouthfuls, which is a good sign that this is a good cream-based pasta. The only grip I had about this dish was that the amount of duck meat was too little and my pasta was too much.

The interior of the café wasn't too bad, but as I mentioned earlier, there wasn't much lighting when I was there and I didn't like the metal chairs also. But we had friendly service from the staff!

My friend wanted to try 49 seats and I went along having tried their tom yum pasta which was alright. I ordered the chicken with cheese, with an option of 2 sides (i chose fries and mashed potato), for about $16.90; it was a bad choice as the chicken was not well grilled, and the tomato puree added on top of the cheese spoiled the taste of the dish. They do not serve water, so I topped up $4.90 for a drink (the cup was so small you could finish it at one go easily) and soup; mushroom soup was no

I ordered the Pan Fried Fish in Al Scampi Sauce as it was one of the much raved about dish (Other than the tom yum pasta (i didn't feel like eating spicy food that day)). The sauce is CRAZY awesome!!!!! There were little clams and prawns inside and there's more than 1-2 of them. The sauce is really creamy and omg, delicious! I'm drooling as I type this. HAHA! The fish is soft and smooth and was quite a big piece!
There were a lot of fries which I couldn't finish ): Otherwise the whole plate would've been cleaned and sparkly that they didn't have to wash it. Because I swear If I could, I would lick the plate clean. haha!

The set also included one soup of the day and a drink (it was in a vintage tin can! really cool. I was too hungry to snap a picture) haha! All the dishes are also reasonably price even before the student discount as they were not stingy in serving size.

I will definitely be back to try the other dishes although I must say, this is one of the best sauce around!
The place is also quite easy to find as when you come out of the mrt station, you just have to walk straight and turn right after you see a indian temple (and keep walking straight!) we got lost and made a huge detour before we saw the signboard. haha!

49 seats pushes itself as a modern dining concept restaurant, with its decor very much minimalist with metallic touches everywhere. As for the food selection, it is pretty reasonably wide with its focus on Western food. I ordered this chicken chop with mushroom sauce which comes with mashed potato and fries. Boring, but safe... The chicken chop was sufficiently juicy. For around $17 a person for one main course, this is quite a decent pricing.

This is how it looks like in the interior. A very artistic feel. In fact, the furnitures inside’s anything but luxurious. Though so, you’ve got to admit that sometimes with simplicity comes comfort. The black and white art on the walls and the tidiness of the place just makes the place very unique.

Look, even their cups and utensils matches with the metallic theme!

Their menu isn’t like any others outside too. Im not sure how clear it is here, but its made of very old-school kind of flimsy cardboard paper. Its special, true, but I felt that it could be better as its kinda fragile and I'm so afraid of getting it wet or torn. Anyway, they offer an extensive menu of western food served here and a couple of must-trys in which I will share with you guys in awhile.

After Macdonald’s launch of their lychee Mcfizz, I’m very into drinks that consists of a mixture of soda and something else, so I decided to try this. Its really ok only, I think its like Fruit Punch plus Soda. Lychee Mcfizz still wins. (Btw, I really do hope they bring it back.)

Calamari Rings. Their calamari rings comes in small tin baskets which is kinda cute since it matches with their theme. Its tasty, crunchy and chewy but I felt that its a tad bit oily.

Next up, we had the mushroom soup. The soup tasted excellent, the kind that I like, not too thick and not too bland. I’d say its one of the best I’ve ever tasted yet! Definitely recommended! Speaking of it makes me hungry… UGH. Will visit the cafe soon because of their soup!

Anyway, there’s a lot of choices for the main course, from pastas to chickens, fishes and more. For me, I chose the grilled fish as it felt healthier than the rest. The grilled fish served here is really fresh and sweet and it has just about the right amount of herbs to make it delicious without covering the actual taste of the fish. Its also grilled just about right so that the sides of the fish has a sort of crunch to it. Its really good though the sides tasted too normal for the price.

The cheese chicken chop was good too. But you’ve got to be a real cheese-lover to like this cause they didn’t go easy with the cheese and tomato sauce. The combination is nice, if you like the kind of pizza taste? If you’re like me than the normal grilled chicken chop would be good enough for you. I felt that the chicken tasted good enough without the cheese and tomato but then cheese lovers will definitely have a different stand. Again, the sides area so-so only.

My favorite dish over at 49 Seats Cafe is in fact THIS AWESOME SPAGHETTI. It seems that this dish is getting kinda popular in Singapore nowadays. Its called the Tom Yum Seafood Spaghetti and IT TASTES FABULOUS. I'm a fan of spicy stuff and the maggie noodles I eat is often Tom Yum flavored and this is definitely the best combination that I could ever wished for! I'm not sure about how the dish tastes elsewhere but the one at 49 Seats Cafe is like just enough spicy for me. If you like spicy stuff then you should know how you feel when you eat something just spicy enough that its like so “shiok!”. Ya, this dish will give you the feel. With its fresh prawns and clams and the fragrant taste of the Tom Yum gravy you’ll find yourself relishing the plate of spaghetti so easily and quickly (in comparison to you know how there's some spaghetti where you’d find it hard to finish the whole plate not cause you’re full but cause you’re getting sick of the taste). Very recommended!

Anyway, Genevieve (second mention) told me a very special story to the place as to why its called 49 seats. Well, this cafe is located at 49 Kreta Ayer Road (see the 49) and it's got a total exact number of 49 seats! How cool is that?? Before I end off, do note that their last order is at 10:30 and closes at 11plus. So, if you’re in for some good and special western food do remember to give this place a go!

They explained to us the promotions and the soup of the day.
The staffs were very friendly and approachable.

Ice lemon tea wasn't that great as I found it diluted.
When the soup of the day arrived , it was cream of mushroom with a slice of garlic bread.
On the first impression , the soup was very watery and you wouldn't have expected it is so rich in its taste.

The fish and chips was pretty average with 2 selected sides.
Mashed potatoes and fries .

Chicken chop with brown sauce was extremely nice .
The sauce give it the extraordinary taste .
You are able to choose 2 other sides which happens to be garden pasta and mashed potato.
My accompany for the night said that the garden pasta was a little too salty

On average , I would rate it a 3.8 for food .
But a 4.5 for service !
Definitely return again soon
