I was introduced to this quaint little place at Shangri-La Sentosa by my friend, who would enter Sentosa occasionally just to enjoy the food here. Food that warrant an admission cost into Sentosa, it has got to be something...This little restaurant is located near the swimming pool of the hotel. co-joined with the main hotel restaurant. There were only 2 other tables occupied when we got there. So, the beginning was great - we had our privacy to catch up on each other's lives. The interior felt like Wong Fei Hong's Medical Hall in the movies, more than a Chinese restaurant. Probably it's due to the coerced blend of East and Western décor, which to me was a desperate attempt to beef up its image to justify its prices. My friend raved about the Seafood Hor Fun and Laksa. So, those were a "must-try" for us. In addition, we ordered a mixed platter of roasted meat - Char Siew, Roast Duck and Roast Pork.Though the food was tasty, I didn't find anything particularly special to set them apart from hawker fare, apart from the fact that this was eaten in Sentosa, and that there was a scallop in the hor fun. The hor fun paled in comparison to some of our Tze Char stalls in our coffeeshops in terms of "wok hei". The laksa was simply ordinary. I would have re-written this review if a crayfish was thrown into either dish! That would set it apart from our usual fare. The mixed roasted meat platter was decent and generous in serving, but once again, cheaper and more delicious options are available in our hawker centres. A special concocted sauce accompanying them would turn the tables around! It's a waste that the décor was done up reasonably well (still have mixed feelings about it), food was somewhat palatable, yet no "heart" has gone into making the dining experience a magical one. Why? Isn't Sentosa meant to be magical? And if I didn't remember wrongly, it all totalled to $60-$70+! continue reading
